Foster Care Placement : Age At Time Of Removal And Successful Functioning, Michelle L. Wetzel Jan 1999

Foster Care Placement : Age At Time Of Removal And Successful Functioning, Michelle L. Wetzel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Foster care placement is considered to be the primary placement option for children who are removed from their families for reasons of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect. Child care workers question the level of future success these children will acquire if they are not removed from their abusive environments as soon as possible. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the age at time of removal and success levels in the areas of education, substance abuse, and probation involvement during the adolescent years, ages 16- 18.

Subjects• functioning in these areas was assessed by …

Texas Rule Of Evidence 503: Defining Scope Of Employment For Corporations Comment., Craig W. Saunders Jan 1999

Texas Rule Of Evidence 503: Defining Scope Of Employment For Corporations Comment., Craig W. Saunders

St. Mary's Law Journal

The attorney-corporate client privilege should be regarded as encompassing only communications made to the corporation’s counsel by employees in the scope of their employment. The Supreme Court of Texas and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ordered the merger of the Civil and Criminal Rules of Evidence. The merger became effective on March 1, 1998 and is now known as the Texas Rules of Evidence. Although the civil and criminal rules often mirror each other, one monumental change is in the new version of Rule 503. This new version significantly alters the analysis used in a corporate context and determines …

A Fibre Optical Strain Sensor, Thomas David Paul Allsop Jan 1999

A Fibre Optical Strain Sensor, Thomas David Paul Allsop

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Strain-sensing elements, fabricated in standard communications-grade single mode optical fibre, are increasingly being considered for application in structural health monitoring. The reason for this is the numerous advantages demonstrated by these devices compared with traditional indicators. This thesis describes work carried out on optical sensors at the University of Plymouth. The aim of this work was to achieve an optical fibre strain sensing system capable of measuring absolute strain with good resolution and having wide dynamic range, without bulky optical equipment and not susceptible to misalignment due to handling. Earlier work was devoted to study on an intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric …

Trade And The Environment: A Political Model Of International Public Goods Problem., Qingshui Zhou Jan 1999

Trade And The Environment: A Political Model Of International Public Goods Problem., Qingshui Zhou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent decades there has been a debate over the entwined issues of trade and the environment, and the 1990s witnessed a great rise in global environmental concerns. The purpose of the present study is to seek a cooperative solution to these concerns. Postwar environmental movement, interaction of trade and the environment, and the reconciliation issues are reviewed. Methodologies to studying these issues are categorized into (1) international trade approaches, and (2) environmental economics approaches. A political model-cost sharing game is then proposed. Specifically, environmental problems resulting from trade are treated as international public goods and the issue of optimal …

The Role Of Therapist Communication Style In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy., Laura Christine Capage Jan 1999

The Role Of Therapist Communication Style In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy., Laura Christine Capage

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research has found a relationship between treatment success and parental compliance with treatment programs. The current study explored how therapist characteristics impact on parental compliance with a behavioral parent-training program (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy). Also, differences in maternal satisfaction with the treatment program and therapist were explored. The participants were 45 mothers with children between the ages of 24 months and 83 months. Each mother was taught effective parenting strategies using one of three therapist communication styles: (a) positive therapist, (b) neutral therapist, and (c) negative therapist. Although all groups demonstrated an increase in their skill level from pretreatment to posttreatment, …

City Of Boerne V. Flores: Religious Free Exercise Pays A High Price For The Supreme Court's Retaliation On Congress, Elizabeth Trujillo Jan 1999

City Of Boerne V. Flores: Religious Free Exercise Pays A High Price For The Supreme Court's Retaliation On Congress, Elizabeth Trujillo

Faculty Scholarship

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution, made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment, protects a person's right to the free exercise of religion. This protection, however, fails to provide a framework with which to reconcile the freedom of religious conduct with the need for government to regulate conduct. All three branches of government, as created in the Constitution, create and refine this framework. Traditionally, the judiciary has been the final interpreter of the Constitution and, in this capacity, has defined the powers of the other branches of government. For example, the Supreme Court has interpreted Congress's …

Adolescents In Residential Treatment: Characteristics And Treatment Outcome., Tad Timothy Gorske Jan 1999

Adolescents In Residential Treatment: Characteristics And Treatment Outcome., Tad Timothy Gorske

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the characteristics of adolescent clients in a residential program and identified which characteristics best predict treatment outcome. Adolescent characteristics were identified by reviewing 150 randomly sampled charts. Characteristics were specified on a data sheet which included the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) to determine level of behavioral severity. Treatment outcome was based on discharge summaries contained in the charts. Results indicated that adolescents who are less likely to succeed in treatment (a) exhibit more severe antisocial behavior, (b) live with someone, or some placement, other than family, and (c) do not receive a combination of …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the reactions of mental health professionals to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related bereavement. Ninety-six mental health professionals from across the United States (e.g., counselors, social workers, and psychologists) completed questionnaires concerning the loss of a client to AIDS. Measures included the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Satisfaction with Life Scale. There were no significant relations between client deaths (number and recency) and indices of grief, trauma, psychological distress, or satisfaction with life. Symptoms of distress did not increase with number of deaths or in relation to recency of a …

The Effects Of Environmental Aging On The Durability Of Glass/Epoxy Composites., Somjai Kajorncheappunngam Jan 1999

The Effects Of Environmental Aging On The Durability Of Glass/Epoxy Composites., Somjai Kajorncheappunngam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are beginning to be used as structural materials in construction. However, their mechanical properties can degrade after prolonged exposure to the environment. Understanding this degradation was the focus of this research. Epoxy neat resin and glass/epoxy composite samples were soaked in four different solutions (distilled water, saturated salt solution, 5 M NaOH, and 1 M HCl solution) for 5 months. The samples were also subjected to a combination of temperature and sustained load at room temperature and at 60°C. The glass transition temperature (Tg), storage modulus, tensile strength, and strain at failure were measured. The …

Modification And Psychometric Examination Of A Self-Report Measure Of Fear In Older Adults., Jane Null Kogan Jan 1999

Modification And Psychometric Examination Of A Self-Report Measure Of Fear In Older Adults., Jane Null Kogan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very few studies have examined the concept of fear in older adults. Moreover, there is no self-report measure of fear that has been shown to be psychometrically sound for use with older individuals. The primary purposes of the present study were: (a) to develop a measure of self-reported fear that includes fears relevant to older adulthood, (b) to develop a measure for assessing daily interference associated with fears, and (c) to examine the psychometric properties of this new instrument. Secondarily, preliminary findings from Kogan and Edelstein (1997) raise the question of why some older adults report interference resulting from fear …

Single Mothers, Income, And Health: An Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Melanie Quickfall Jan 1999

Single Mothers, Income, And Health: An Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Melanie Quickfall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study examined the relationships between single mothers, income and health, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects that certain risk factors (low income, stress, public housing, financial stress, education, home satisfaction, single parenting) and protective factors (neighbourhood satisfaction, social support, program participation, community integration) had on both the physical and mental health of single mothers. In the quantitative component, statistical analyses (a series of two-way mixed ANOVA’s and linear regressions) were conducted on interview data from 276 mothers who were involved in the Better Beginnings, Better Futures project in Highfield-Etobicoke, …

An Assessment Of Organizational Effectiveness: A Study Of West Virginia Watershed Associations., Sarah A. Cline Jan 1999

An Assessment Of Organizational Effectiveness: A Study Of West Virginia Watershed Associations., Sarah A. Cline

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recently, federal and state government agencies have advocated a watershed approach to deal with water pollution issues. This approach addresses water quality and use on a watershed level and advocates public participation in watershed protection issues. In many communities, watershed associations have formed as an avenue for public involvement in a watershed approach. This thesis examines factors impacting watershed association effectiveness in reaching their intermediate goals (activities conducted and financial resources obtained for watershed protection) to achieve their final outcomes. Factors effecting the formation of watershed associations are also examined. Both analyses are conducted at the watershed level using the …

A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang Jan 1999

A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry is gaining recognition as a powerful tool for the study of proteins. It is a “soft” ionization source, which permits the preservation of noncovalent interactions prevailing in biological systems. It is able to form multiply charged ions, which facilitates analyses of very large molecules. The change of the protein conformations can be investigated by charge state distribution shifts in ESI-MS. The noncovalent interactions of proteins with other molecules can also be studied by ESI-MS because these interactions often change the shape of proteins. I examined the effect of various operating parameters on shape of the ESI-MS …

A series of biological tests were conducted to ascertain whether differences among isolates of the dogwood anthracnose fungus (Discula destructiva ) could be measured. Discula destructiva isolates were recovered from forty symptomatic eastern flowering dogwood trees growing at four locations in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Before sampling, each tree was rated for percent foliage infected. Symptomatic leaf and twigs were collected in the summer of 1994 and D. destructiva was isolated from each leaf and twig sample. Isolates were cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. Subcultures onto the same medium were made in order to evaluate growth and colony …

Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor Jan 1999

Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The performance of N-Halamine polymers in eliminating bacteria from water streams was studied in this research. Numerous experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of both pure N-Halamine polymer and polymer coated on carrier particles to remove Escherichia coli from water streams. The results for this research were inconclusive for a number of reasons. First, the polymer used in this research was not active. It lacked the correct chemical structure to kill bacteria effectively. Additionally, when active polymer was received, insufficient quantities were available to produce viable coated carrier particles. The ability to regenerate the polymer using bleach solutions could …

The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White Jan 1999

The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research points to a combination of genetic, physiological, and environmental factors in the origin of anxiety and depressive disorders. These factors are adversely impacted by stress and can be influenced by both the prenatal and postnatal environments. Our research shows that offspring of mothers stressed during the last week of gestation appear to be normal in basal behavioral states. However, upon the presentation of stressful stimuli in the forms of anxiogenic drugs (e.g. yohimbine and idazoxan), prenatally stressed offspring respond differentially in comparison with control (normal) offspring. Doses of yohimbine and idazoxan that increased acoustic startle in control animals were …
