Effect Of The Environmental Temperature On The Degradation Period Of Carbaryl, Ahmet Uyanik, Mustafa Özdemi̇r Jan 1999

Effect Of The Environmental Temperature On The Degradation Period Of Carbaryl, Ahmet Uyanik, Mustafa Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the effect of the temperature on the degradation period of Carbaryl (Sevin), a widely used outdoor and indoor insecticide, was investigated in a laboratory in soil and on green plants by using a new quantitative TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) method. The experimental temperature conditions were 40°C , 16°C and 5°C for soil and 15°C for green plants. The results which were evaluated by photocopying of the TLC spots on a graph paper and square counting showed that carbaryl degradation is a first order reaction and the temperature dependent half-life of the degradation takes grater than four weeks …

The Effect Of Hydrogenation On Some Chemical Properties Of Soybean Oil, Muammer Kayahan, Azi̇z Teki̇n, İssa Javi̇di̇pour, Mehmet Küçük, Hülya Karabacak

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Some changes occurring in soybean oil hydrogenated using Ni catalyst in a batch reactor at 220°C and 2.5 atm H_2 pressure were monitored. For this aim, iodine number, fatty acid composition, conjugated fatty acid and trans fatty acid contents were determined on samples taken at different intervals of the reaction. Iodine number had a regular decrease during the reaction, on the other hand, conjugated fatty acid content increased till 30 th. minute and then decreased permanently. There was an absolute selective conditions up to 60 th. minute of hydrogenation. Then, selectivity raito decreased gradually, which was calculated as 49.33 at …

Wrongful Life, Wrongful Birth, Wrongful Death, And The Right To Refuse Treatment: Can Reasonable Jurisdictions Recognize All But One, Mark Strasser Jan 1999

Wrongful Life, Wrongful Birth, Wrongful Death, And The Right To Refuse Treatment: Can Reasonable Jurisdictions Recognize All But One, Mark Strasser

Missouri Law Review

One of the most controversial birth-related torts is the wrongful life action in which a plaintiff sues for damages, claiming that he would have been better off never having lived at all and, but for defendant's negligence, would not in fact have lived. Most jurisdictions refuse to recognize this cause of action. However, the justifications for those refusals are often unpersuasive, since the acceptance of those rationales would imply that other existing practices must be changed. For example, although wrongful life and wrongful birth are different actions involving different duties and harms, many of the rationales for and against recognizing …

Federal Jurisdiction Over Juveniles: Who Decides , Alicia K. Embley Jan 1999

Federal Jurisdiction Over Juveniles: Who Decides , Alicia K. Embley

Missouri Law Review

Because of the increase in the number and severity of violent crimes committed by juveniles, public demand for harsher penalties and proceedings for young offenders also increases each year.2 Congress has responded to the public outcry by enacting numerous pieces of legislation that mandate federal juvenile accountability. This legislation represents a drastic departure from the federal government's traditional policy of leaving juvenile justice affairs to the states. One of the many congressional acts in the past decades confers federal jurisdiction upon prosecution of juveniles who commit serious violent or drug related crimes if the United States Attorney certifies that the …

Maltreating Caregivers: An Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change, Lisa M. Jones Jan 1999

Maltreating Caregivers: An Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change, Lisa M. Jones

Open Access Dissertations

Many of the decisions that must be made by child protective service (CPS) agencies involve assessing the extent to which maltreating caregivers have made or are ready to make changes in their parenting behaviors. Yet, little is known about the process of change for these caregivers and no method is available to systematically measure their success in making the changes that CPS agencies require of them. The current study applies the Transtheoretical Model of Change to the problem of child abuse and neglect. The Transtheoretical Model has successfully measured change in many health-related behaviors including smoking and excercise. More recently, …

Note, A Birthright Rearticulated: The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Nirej S. Sekhon Jan 1999

Note, A Birthright Rearticulated: The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Nirej S. Sekhon

Faculty Publications By Year

This Note addresses Proposition 227, California's recently enacted voter initiative banning bilingual education in public schools. Nirej Sekhon argues that the proposition functions rhetorically as a racially inflected exhortation to nonwhite peoples in the United States. The proposition equates American identity with white identity by claiming English as the birthright privilege of white Americans. As such, the proposition is continuous with the history of language and education politics in the United States. The author concludes by sketching the broad challenge that his analysis poses to current legal mechanisms.

A Media Skills Intervention For Adolescents On Gender Attitudes, Beliefs, And Behaviors, Barbara E. Silver Jan 1999

A Media Skills Intervention For Adolescents On Gender Attitudes, Beliefs, And Behaviors, Barbara E. Silver

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the effects of a media literacy intervention on the gender attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of a sample of 9th and 11th grade adolescents. As a time of identity development, adolescence can be especially challenging for girls, as they are faced with traditional cultural expectations about gender. It is proposed that the media, particularly television, reinforce traditional ideas about gender for both sexes, including traditional interactions with other gender peers, and may contribute to low social self-esteem in girls, with negative outcomes. A 7-session media literacy workshop, using a pretest/post-test control group design, was implemented with …

A Student Self-Management Strategy For Reducing Inattentiveness, Disruptiveness And Teacher Intervention, James M. Cabrera Jan 1999

A Student Self-Management Strategy For Reducing Inattentiveness, Disruptiveness And Teacher Intervention, James M. Cabrera

Theses : Honours

A large body of evidence suggests that the use of self-management procedures can reduce significantly the occurrence of disruptive behaviours and teacher dependency for task completion. The present study used a single subject design with two students with developmental disabilities to test the effectiveness of a TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children) self-management system. The system employed a visual schedule work routine coupled with a token economy and self-selection of reinforcers. Tho findings of this study showed that both students were able to utilise a TEACCH style self-management system to engage in on-task behaviour and …

Head Stabilisation During Running In Place Of Children With Varying Motor Proficiency Levels, Craig Atkins Jan 1999

Head Stabilisation During Running In Place Of Children With Varying Motor Proficiency Levels, Craig Atkins

Theses : Honours

Understanding head motion in children may contribute to development of effective strategies to improve coordination of children. The purpose of this study was to investigate head motion in children during stationary running. Twelve healthy 8-year-old children participated in this study and underwent a running proficiency test based on the Test for Gross Motor Proficiency (TGMO). Subjects were then videotaped while running for one minute "on the spot". Reflective markers were digitised for analysis of head motion relative to the external environment, and relative to the trunk. Resultant and component head angular velocities were calculated for each subject over five consecutive …

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook Jan 1999

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Adult students who experience difficulties in comprehending written (printed) language frequently are limited in their scholastic development and possible employment opportunities. These individuals, who represent a growing segment of the learning disabled population, include poor readers and dyslexics and they routinely seek help and remediation through various educational techniques. One remediation technique often used is "books on tape". Through books on tape, recorded spoken text is presented in a sequential manner to the remedial reader as he or she is reading the corresponding printed document. This dissertation reviewed the books on tape paradigm, and through the use of current computer …

Growth Hormone And Plc-Gamma, Saw-Myo Tun Jan 1999

Growth Hormone And Plc-Gamma, Saw-Myo Tun

Honors Capstones

Growth hormone (GH) is responsible for diverse physiological processes. In order to carry out these processes, it uses several signaling pathways involving dimerization of GHRs, formation of GHR-JAK2 complex, and activation of the complex by phosphorylation. One of the pathways it uses is PKC signaling pathway. There is evidence indicating PLC-gammal is involved in this pathway.
