Path Analysis Of Psychosocial Models Of Binge Eating In Obesity., Leslie Garl Womble

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to test a cross-sectional psychosocial etiological model of binge eating in obesity using path analysis. Depression, dietary restraint, self-esteem, weight cycling, history of teasing, body dissatisfaction, concern for physical appearance, negative perception of physical appearance, media exposure, and social pressure to maintain a thin ideal were 'state' social learning constructs that were tested as correlates of binge eating. Personality variables such as neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were stable 'trait' variables that were tested as correlates. The study sample was 808 adults, including 444 women with a mean age of 33.35 (SD = 13.60) …

Parental Participation In A Title I Family Literacy Program: Results From A Mixed -Model Study., Karen Boudreaux

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A family literacy, Title I program was studied to determine the attitudes and beliefs which affect parental participation in a family literacy program. The theoretical framework of cultural capitol assumed that parents who chose to participate in a family literacy program possess different components in their cultural capitol than parents who choose not to participate. There were 3 Hypotheses and 6 Study Questions which guided this parallel mixed model study with dominant (qualitative)-less dominant (quantitative) design. A Title I Family Literacy Program located in a large, urban, public school system was the study site. The sample size consisted of 40 …

Concert Of Action By Substantial Assistance: What Ever Happened To Unconscious Aiding And Abetting, Dana Neacsu Jan 1999

Concert Of Action By Substantial Assistance: What Ever Happened To Unconscious Aiding And Abetting, Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

As one commentator has uncomfortably noted, in the 1980's, courts seemed inclined to develop and use theories of liability, which ensured that the risk of injury and loss was transferred from consumer victims to manufacturers and then, through the price mechanism, to the community-at-large. That was a time when courts seemed to be comfortable applying product liability without fault, and holding manufacturers as "insurers even for those products, which previously would not have been considered 'defective' in design, in manufacture, or in marketing." Since then, courts have scaled the doctrine back.

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences is an alternate way to describe the talents or gifts we each possess. Multiple intelligences can be considered as intelligences in diverse disciplines which allow human beings the ability …

Promoting Self-Advocacy Skills For Students With Mild Disabilities, Loretta Lynn Franz

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a unit plan for teachers to help promote self-advocacy skills in the Individual Education Program (IEP) for students with mild disabilities. Students are often not successful in the IEP process because they are dependent on others to make decisions for them. They are not given the opportunity to make their own choices and decisions. They have a poor self-concept, lack of understanding, self-acceptance and motivation. …

The University As Citizen: Institutional Identity And Social Responsibility, William M. Sullivan Jan 1999

The University As Citizen: Institutional Identity And Social Responsibility, William M. Sullivan

Higher Education

To act responsibly, we must know who we are. If higher education today is uncertain about its social responsibilities, as seems manifestly the case, then this suggests that the American academy is unsure about its institutional identity. For organizations as for individuals, responsibility follows from relationships. But relationships grow out of our purposes even as how we relate to others helps to shape our aims. Vital and successful institutions stand out by their ability to maintain their direction and sense of meaning even amid significant shifts in the social landscape. Indeed, they can aid in providing direction for other institutions, …

Presidents’ Declaration On The Civic Responsibility Of Higher Education, Campus Compact Jan 1999

Presidents’ Declaration On The Civic Responsibility Of Higher Education, Campus Compact

Higher Education

As presidents of colleges and universities, both private and public, large and small, two-year and four-year, we challenge higher education to re-examine its public purposes and its commitments to the democratic ideal. We also challenge higher education to become engaged, through actions and teaching, with its communities. We have a fundamental task to renew our role as agents of our democracy. This task is both urgent and long-term. There is growing evidence of disengagement of many Americans from the communal life of our society in general, and from the responsibilities of democracy in particular. We share a special concern about the disengagement of …

Beyond Yucca Mountain: Split Liability Drives Action For Interim Nuclear Waste Storage, Amy L. Stein Jan 1999

Beyond Yucca Mountain: Split Liability Drives Action For Interim Nuclear Waste Storage, Amy L. Stein

UF Law Faculty Publications

After fifteen years and six billion dollars, the United States still lacks a viable long-term solution to the mounting levels of high-level nuclear waste scattered across the nation in 68 sites. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (“NWPA”) and its 1987 Amendments have driven regulators to approve Yucca Mountain, Nevada, for burial of the 37,000 metric tons of nuclear waste in need of a final resting place. In the NWPA, Congress set January 31, 1998 as the deadline by which the Department of Energy (“DOE”) was to dispose of the utilities' nuclear waste. However, litigation challenges, scientific uncertainty, and …

The Irrefutable Logic Of Judgment Proofing: A Reply To Professor Schwarcz, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 1999

The Irrefutable Logic Of Judgment Proofing: A Reply To Professor Schwarcz, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

In The Inherent Irrationality of Judgment Proofing, Professor Steven L. Schwarcz raises interesting new arguments against my death of liability thesis. The sheer number of those arguments makes it impossible for me to respond to all of them. The core of Schwarcz's insight is to divide judgment proofing structures into those negotiated at arm's length and those constructed within a single corporate group. I consider his arguments regarding the first set of structures in Part I and the second set in Part II.

Twerski & Cohen's Second Revolution: A Systems/Strategic Perspective, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

In an article published in 1992, Professors Twerski and Cohen suggested that basic principles of the law of informed consent require medical providers to tell their patients about competing providers could perform the same procedures better or more safely. In its 1996 decision in Johnson v. Kokemoor, the Supreme Court of Wisconsin cited Twerski and Cohen's article in holding a neurosurgeon liable for not telling a patient of such a competitor. As a result, Twerski and Cohen now argue, the law of informed consent now stands on the brink of a second revolution. This comment sets forth a systems/strategic analysis …

Accomplishments And Impact From Breeding For Increased Forage Nutritional Value, M. D. Casler, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 1999

Accomplishments And Impact From Breeding For Increased Forage Nutritional Value, M. D. Casler, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Despite considerable rhetoric, there were no serious efforts to improve genetically the nutritional value of forage crops until the 1960s when advances in analytical chemistry and rumen fermentation technology allowed breeders to adapt meaningful laboratory techniques for repeatably screening thousands of samples in a short time period. Genetic increases in some measure of digestibility, typically in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), have been documented in new cultivars of at least seven forage crops, including legumes, coolseason grasses, warm-season grasses, annuals, and perennials. The rate of gain for IVDMD ranges from 8 to 45 g kg-1 cycle-1, which, …
