The Anchor: 1999

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Paul Dionne was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1942. He attended Lewiston St. Peters, Lewiston High School, Kents Hill prep school for one year in 1960, and Providence College. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the army. He was at Fort Knox from 1967-69, and then Fort Gordon in Georgia. He then spent one year in Vietnam, receiving a Bronze Star. He went to Maine Law, graduating in 1972. He was on the finance board and later mayor of Lewiston from 1979-82. He then practiced litigation law and some criminal law for two years.
