The Differential Effects Of Physical And Sexual Abuse On Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors, Delana Renee Hoover Jan 1999

The Differential Effects Of Physical And Sexual Abuse On Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors, Delana Renee Hoover

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of physical and sexual abuse on internalizing and externalizing behaviors exhibited by the victims of abuse. Two raters completed the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1983) for 49 children and adolescents between 11 and 17 years of age who were living in a residential facility. Each child or adolescent was included in one of three groups: (a) physical abuse group, (b) sexual abuse group, and (c) non-abuse group. The internalizing and externalizing scores for the three groups were compared. Because interrater reliability was low for the internalizing scores, a one-way analysis of variance was …

Tutoring Services: Perceptions Of Parents Of School-Age Children, Teresa E. Hansher Jan 1999

Tutoring Services: Perceptions Of Parents Of School-Age Children, Teresa E. Hansher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A convenience sample of 375 parents of children enrolled in grades K-12 was surveyed to assess their attitudes and need towards a community-tutoring program offered beyond what was available through their local school systems. These families had children enrolled in both private and public schools. The study looked at three main issues in regards to a tutoring program: (a) were parents aware of what tutoring services were available through their child’s school; (b) would parents financially support a community-tutoring program; and (c) what academic areas would they need tutoring provided for in such a program. Results indicated that an overwhelming …

Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover Jan 1999

Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Aerial hunting is one of the tools used by wildlife managers to reduce predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) on livestock and wildlife (Guthery and Beasom 1977, Sterner and Schumake 1978, Stout 1982. Smith et al. 1986). In research conducted by Wagner and Conover (1999), areas with preventive aerial hunting had fewer confirmed and estimated lamb losses to coyote predation and required significantly fewer hours of additional corrective predation management than areas without aerial hunting. Aerial hunting is perceived to be especially valuable for large areas and areas with rough terrain and limited access (United States Department of the …

Be Careful What You Wish For: An Examination Of Arrest And Prosecution Patterns Of Domestic Violence Cases In Two Cities In Michigan, Andrea D. Lyon Jan 1999

Be Careful What You Wish For: An Examination Of Arrest And Prosecution Patterns Of Domestic Violence Cases In Two Cities In Michigan, Andrea D. Lyon

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article will examine six months of data on arrests for domestic violence in the cities of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. In order to be able to interpret what the data means Lyon did some other research. The results were surprising- for example, although women tend to be injured most severely by domestic violence, they use violence in intimate relationships a little more often than men. Part I of this Article traces a brief history of domestic violence and discusses the issue of who commits domestic violence, Part II discusses the "must arrest" and "should arrest" policies and their history, …

The Marriage Mirage: The Personal And Social Indentity Implications Of Same-Gendered Matrimony, Linda S. Eckols Jan 1999

The Marriage Mirage: The Personal And Social Indentity Implications Of Same-Gendered Matrimony, Linda S. Eckols

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article will examine why so much is at stake in the political, social, and legal debate over same-gender marriage. It will not address the constitutional questions of whether there is a fundamental right to marry, although persuasive arguments have been advanced from both sides of the debate." This Article will focus on a more introspective view of the potential effects of legalizing same-gender marriage on the identities of gay men and lesbians in committed relationships and on the interaction between same-gender couples and society. Marriage would provide the integration sought by gay men and lesbians, but at the expense …

Intensive In-Home Family-Based Services: Reactions From Consumers And Providers, Elaine Walton, Alfred C. Dodini Jan 1999

Intensive In-Home Family-Based Services: Reactions From Consumers And Providers, Elaine Walton, Alfred C. Dodini

Journal of Family Strengths

An intensive family preservation program was examined through interviews with 31 families who received the services and four caseworkers who provided the services. The primary finding from interviews with both care givers and caseworkers was that a positive therapeutic relationship between the worker and the client family contributes most to the success of the program. Workers who provided the services stressed the need for making concrete services available as well as clinical intervention and skills training, and they were adamant about screening families for appropriateness before including them in an intensive, inhome program.

Perspectives On The Church And Church Growth Theory, Charles Van Engen Jan 1999

Perspectives On The Church And Church Growth Theory, Charles Van Engen

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Because we will be talking about the church and its nature during this conference, I thought it might be good for us to be reminded of some basic characteristics of the church and the various ways the church has seen itself. At the risk of oversimplification, I would like to briefly survey ten broad perspectives on the Church which one may derive from the Church’s history and relate them to Church Growth theory. The ten perspectives mentioned in this paper are in no way meant to be exhaustive of the multiple ways one may view the Church. I do not …
