Managing To Reduce Nitrate Leaching: What Is In It For The Farmer?, Gilbert D. Miller, Jay C. Andersen

All Archived Publications

Nitrates leached into groundwater may be associated with the following: (1) methemoglobinemia (blue baby) in humans and other mammals; (2)cardiovascular collapse and shock in horses; (3) possibility of cancer (EPA); and (4) eutrophication of water bodies (IFIA) when nitrate contaminated groundwater reaches surface water through wells or springs. Nitrate leaching is not only a possible source of environmental damage but also the loss of an input before it is used in production.

Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey Jan 1999

Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Fishery biologists from Arizona, Nevada, and Utah have been faced with the imposing dilemma of monitoring the pelagic fishery of Lakes Powell and Mead. Standard sampling procedures typically used to monitor shoreline fisheries are simply inadequate for the deep volumes of pelagic habitat found in these two reservoirs. Nearly a decade ago, Arizona and Nevada biologists recommended that hydroacoustics be used to monitor these communities (Persons and Dreyer 1987a,b, NDOW 1994). However, for various reasons an acoustical monitoring program was never fully implemented. This study represents the first attempt to describe the pelagic fishery of either reservoir using acoustic technology.

Evaluation Of The Potential Economic Impacts Of 40 Cfr 197: Environmental Radiation Standards For Yucca Mountain, Nevada, United States Environmental Protection Agency

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pursuant to section 801 of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EnPA), is proposing a rule which contains standards for the protection of the public from releases of radioactive materials stored or disposed of in the repository at the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. This report, as required by Executive Order 12866, provides an assessment of the economic impacts of the proposed rule. As the Agency is hindered by the unavailability of necessary information to perform a rigorous quantitative economic assessment, this report provides background to the standards being proposed, a …

Water Resources Management Plan Arches National Park And Canyonlands National Park, United States Department Of The Interior National Park Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This Water Resources Management Plan describes the water resources of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the issues affecting them. This plan provides detailed descriptions of the hydrologic environment in both parks, discussion of management issues developed in two scoping sessions, and management directives in the form of project statements. Typically, a Water Resources Management Plan is preceded by a scoping meeting held at the park. In this case, the Southeast Utah Group of parks (Southeast Utah Group), which includes Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Natural Bridges National Monument, held two scoping meetings. The first scoping session, held …

The Effect Of Mechanical Noise And Natural Sound On Visitor Experiences In Units Of The National Park System, Dr. James Gramann, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior Jan 1999

The Effect Of Mechanical Noise And Natural Sound On Visitor Experiences In Units Of The National Park System, Dr. James Gramann, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This paper reviews research on the effects of mechanical noise and natural sound on visitor experiences in national parks. Three approaches to studying noise impacts are described. Most noise research to date has addressed the impact of air-tour overflights on visitor experiences. these impacts are localized with significant percentages of visitors in some parks reporting interference with natural sounds from aircraft noise. Research also shows that unthreatening natural environments can have significant stress-reducing effects for many people. However, it is unclear if these effects are due to hearing the sounds of nature or to a combination of hearing and seeing …

Water Resources Management Plan: Arches National Park & Canyonlands National Park, Utah, Lynn Cudlip, Kevin Berghoff, David Vana-Miller

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The National Park Service recognizes the importance of preserving, conserving, and protecting water resources within its boundaries. Water resources, whether as large as the Colorado River or as small as a seep in Ernie's Country of Canyonlands National Park, play a distinctive role in linking ecosystems and , in general, provide habitat for a number of organisms. To protect park water resources, the Natinoal Park Service initiated a Water REsources Planning Program in 1991. The planning program provides an essential step in developing a comprehensive understanding of a park's hydrological system and the complex resource issues which surround it. The …

Consensual Relationships And The Constitution: A Case Of Liberty Denied, Gary E. Elliot Jan 1999

Consensual Relationships And The Constitution: A Case Of Liberty Denied, Gary E. Elliot

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

On many university and college campuses, there exists an anti-civil-libertarian spirit reminiscent of the McCarthy period. During the 1940s and early 1950s, regents, trustees, academic administrations, and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), although each for a different reason, persuaded the Academy to repress personal liberty. It is difficult to pinpoint precisely when constitutionally and statutorily protected liberties and rights became secondary to insulating educational institutions from damage suits in their pursuit of a selective social and political agenda.

The Effectiveness Of Balance Training Exercises In Post-Stroke Individuals Using The Neurocom Balance Master® System, Joseph Brenner Jan 1999

The Effectiveness Of Balance Training Exercises In Post-Stroke Individuals Using The Neurocom Balance Master® System, Joseph Brenner

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

A case study was completed on a 70-year-old female who had suffered a right cerebral vascular accident and left hemiparesis on June 25, 1996. She exhibited left upper and lower abnormal synergy patterns that disrupted her gait cycle. The subject volunteered for the study to improve her ambulation efficiency. Individuals suffering a stroke often times exhibit deficits in balance due to weakness, sensory loss, impaired righting reflexes, and visuospatial distortion. Force platforms, such as the NeuroCom Balance Master®, have become useful pieces of equipment in the field of physical therapy. The technological advancements in force platforms have allowed clinicians to …

Benthic Biodiversity And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Acid Mine Drainage, Acid Impacted And Nonimpacted Streams, Stephen D. Greene Jan 1999

Benthic Biodiversity And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Acid Mine Drainage, Acid Impacted And Nonimpacted Streams, Stephen D. Greene

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

South Fork of Sand Lick Creek, Logan County, West Virginia, drains an abandoned coal strip mine which had exploited Pottsville series coalbeds (Pennsylvania strata). These strata outcrop throughout southwestern West Virginia. North Fork watershed is relatively unchanged, save a small roadcut throughout. South Fork benthic community had not recovered although mining activity had ceased about 20 years earlier. Benthic communities were analyzed with detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). Family Chironomidae predominated South Fork benthic community throughout the study. North Fork’s benthic community had as major contributors acid resistant caddisfly family Hydropsychidae, mayfly family Baetidae, and stonefly families Perlodidae and Nemouridae. Family …
