The Value Of Independence In Old Age, Paula C. Carder May 1999

The Value Of Independence In Old Age, Paula C. Carder

Dissertations and Theses

Why is independence a central theme for proponents of assisted living facilities? How do assisted living providers respond to this theme? These questions are pursued in an ethnographic study centered on Oregon's assisted living program. Assisted living facilities (ALF), defined and monitored by Oregon's Senior and Disabled Services Division (SDSD), are a type of housing for disabled, primarily elderly, persons. Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR-411-56) define independence, requiring ALF providers to support resident independence.

Using social worlds theory as a sensitizing concept, assisted living is treated as a distinct social world. The activities of key groups, including SDSD staff, an ALF …

Housing For Senior Citizens In Malaysia, Rugayah Ag. Besar May 1999

Housing For Senior Citizens In Malaysia, Rugayah Ag. Besar

Master's Projects

Housing is one of the crucial issues in most of the countries. Housing or homes for senior citizens was established in the developed or western countries in the 1950s, and began in the developing countries in the 1980s. In Malaysia, various programs and housing policies were introduced for senior citizens in the early 1990s. Both government and private agencies in this country contribute in developing better housing designs and facilities for senior citizens in the form of institutions or homes. These institutions are normally occupied by the senior citizens who are not only poor but also unable to look after …

Factors Affecting Participation In Senior Center Programs, Betty J. Jefferson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study investigated whether the factors of relationships, recreation, relatedness, and reward would affect participation in senior centers. Demographic variables of age, sex, and socio-economic status and enabling variables of health, transportation, and income were also investigated. Data were collected from a sample of 57 older adults (aged 55 and over) from three Las Vegas Senior Centers using an instrument developed by the investigator. Findings revealed that relationships, recreation, and relatedness contributed to reasons for participation. Rewards did not seem to affect participation. In terms of demographics, more participants tended to be older, female, and educated. Enabling variables revealed participants …

Managers In The Middle: A Study Of Long Term Care Regional Managers Dealing With Organizational Stress, Jeffrey W. Ferguson May 1999

Managers In The Middle: A Study Of Long Term Care Regional Managers Dealing With Organizational Stress, Jeffrey W. Ferguson

Student Scholarship

Perhaps the most difficult job in long term care chain organizations is that of the Regional Manager. This study considers the chronic and acute events with which Regional Managers must contend and determines how they cope with the stresses of those events. Appraisal theories of Richard Lazarus and P-E fit are used to test the actions of the Regional Managers. The events discussed seem to confirm previous research regarding coping in that the more significant the event, the greater the likelihood that others will be solicited to attain a solution. Corporate staffs who assist in the acute events help to …

Tai-Chi Chuan (TCC) is a traditional Chinese exercise which has become popular in the Western world recently. The reported health benefits of TCC exercise include increased lower extremity muscle strength, improved balance, improved cardiopulmonary function, reduced tension, and improved overall wellness. UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Toys As Language Stimuli For Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Cassandra M. Baer Apr 1999

Toys As Language Stimuli For Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Cassandra M. Baer

Masters Theses

The study of the use of toys with institutionalized adults began in the field of gerontological nursing (Bailey, Gilbert, & Herweyer, 1992; Francis & Baly, 1986; Mayers & Griffin, 1990; Milton & MacPhail, 1985). Hopper, Bayles, and Tomoeda (1998) described the comforting qualities of plush animals for people with dementia and began to explore the effects of these toys on the language production of women with Alzheimer's Disease. Women were found to produce more information in fewer words when the toys were present.

This study builds on the work of Hopper et al. (1998), comparing language productions of two men …

Constructions Of Client Competence And Theories Of Practice, Robert Rubinson Apr 1999

Constructions Of Client Competence And Theories Of Practice, Robert Rubinson

All Faculty Scholarship

An entrenched stereotype about the elderly is that they inevitably experience a progressive decline in cognitive function - what the Article calls the "idea of decrement." The vast majority of elderly, however, do not experience declining competence for most or all of their lives. Nevertheless, attorneys interpret much of what elderly clients say and do as the product of cognitive impairment, and sometimes even the elderly themselves construct stories about the world and their circumstances in line with the idea of decrement. These attitudes and social constructions, interacting in complex ways, can distort the ability of attorneys to represent elderly …

Age Differences In Work Adjustment : A Study Of Male And Female Managerial Stress, Coping Strategies And Locus Of Control In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu, Paul E. Spector, Cary L. Cooper, Kate Sparks, Ian Donald Apr 1999

Age Differences In Work Adjustment : A Study Of Male And Female Managerial Stress, Coping Strategies And Locus Of Control In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu, Paul E. Spector, Cary L. Cooper, Kate Sparks, Ian Donald

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The present study is a 15 month project which involved data collection from Hong Kong managers at three points to examine mechanisms by which age would relate to work well-being. A total of 634 managers, both male and female, was drawn by random sampling and purposive sampling methods. The results showed that age was negatively related to job strains and quitting intention, and positively related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, older managers reported fewer sources of stress, better control coping, and a more internal work locus of control. Multiple regression analyses suggested that relations of age with job satisfaction and well-being …

Stability And Change In The Living Arrangements Of Older Italian Women, 1990-1995, Cecilia Tomassini, Douglas A. Wolf Apr 1999

Stability And Change In The Living Arrangements Of Older Italian Women, 1990-1995, Cecilia Tomassini, Douglas A. Wolf

Center for Policy Research

In this work we analyze the living arrangements of elderly unmarried women in Italy. We use data from three surveys, collected in 1990, 1994, and 1995 by the Italian statistical agency ISTAT. We consider unmarried women aged 65 and older, and three household types (living alone, with children, or with others), taking into account the availability of children with whom they might share a household. During this period the percentage of elderly living alone fell slightly. We investigate these patterns with a structural analysis based on multinomial models. Results indicate that some individual variables (living in southern Italy, health status) …
