Arizona Source Water Assessment Plan Final Draft, Arizona Department Of Environmental Quality
Arizona Source Water Assessment Plan Final Draft, Arizona Department Of Environmental Quality
Publications (WR)
The safe drinking water amendments of 1996 placed a strong emphasis on the goal to establish a nationwide effort to protect drinking water sources. As part of that goal, the legislation provided for a preliminary assessment of drinking water sources and an inventory of surrounding adjacent land use (ALUs). This nationwide effort will result in the first comprehensive look at the nation's drinking water sources from an assessment perspective. One of the outcomes of this nationwide assessment will be information that public water systems (PWSs) can use to help determine appropriate monitoring frequencies and to protect their sources of drinking …

An Improved Method To Derive Surface Albedo From Narrowband Avhrr Satellite Data: Narrowband To Broadband Conversion, Jie Song, W. Gao
An Improved Method To Derive Surface Albedo From Narrowband Avhrr Satellite Data: Narrowband To Broadband Conversion, Jie Song, W. Gao
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
A method was investigated to estimate broadband surface shortwave albedo from the narrowband reflectances obtained by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRRs) on board the polar orbiting satellites. Field experiments were conducted to measure simultaneously multispectral narrowband reflectances and broadband albedo over various vegetation and soil surfaces. These data were combined to examine the behavior of narrowband-to-broadband (NTB) conversion factors for different surfaces. Many previous studies have used constant NTB conversion factors for the AVHRR data. The results from this investigation indicate that the optimal NTB conversion factors for AVHRR channels 1 and 2 have a strong dependence on …

A New Artistic Rendering Of Izapa Stela 5: A Step Toward Improved Interpretation, John E. Clark
A New Artistic Rendering Of Izapa Stela 5: A Step Toward Improved Interpretation, John E. Clark
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Aided by creative techniques, Ajáx Moreno carefully prepared more accurate, detailed renderings of the Izapa monuments, including Stela 5, with its complex scenes of gods and other supernatural creatures, royalty, animals invested with mythic and value symbolism, and mortals. The author raises relevant questions about reconciling Jakeman’s view with the new drawing: Are there Old World connections? Can Izapa be viewed as a Book of Mormon city? Did the Nephites know of Lehi’s dream? Are there name glyphs on the stela? The scene, if it does not depict Lehi’s dream, fits clearly in Mesoamerican art in theme, style, technical execution, …

A Community Of Physicians : The Rural New York Medical Practices Of David Hanford (1816-1844), Jonathan Johnson (1823-1829), And George M. Teeple (1847-1872), Lois Fischer Black
Theses
Manuscript records open a window to past events and cultures, often serving as a source of information the like of which is not available in printed form. An examination and analysis of three rural New York State physician's case record books, maintained during the nineteenth century, provides insight not only into the evolution practice of medicine, but also serves to highlight the differences between rural and urban routines.
Case records produced during the first half of the nineteenth century, such as those of David Hanford, who practiced between 1816 and 1844, and Jonathan Johnson, who left records of his medical …
A Māori View Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
A Māori View Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The M?ori people read and understood the Book of Mormon from their own cultural perspective. Rather than examining particular verses for doctrinal content, the M?ori viewed the Book of Mormon as a moral story of a people with failings and strengths. They likened the stories to themselves, feeling they lacked the spiritual strength to stay on a righteous path for long. They saw a tragic story of families in conflict and subtribes and tribes quarreling with each other and bent on revenge for personal insults and factional quarrels. The kinship ties seemed particularly relevant to them. The Book of Mormon …

Riparian Vegetation Along The Middle Snake River, Idaho: Zonation, Geographical Trends, And Historical Changes, Mark D. Dixon, W. Carter Johnson
Riparian Vegetation Along The Middle Snake River, Idaho: Zonation, Geographical Trends, And Historical Changes, Mark D. Dixon, W. Carter Johnson
Great Basin Naturalist
A baseline study was conducted on an 83-km free-flowing reach of the Snake River between Swan Falls Dam and the Idaho-Oregon border. The research had 2 components: (1) field characterization and inventory of existing riparian flora, vegetation, and environment (soils, topography, streamflow), and (2) determination and mapping, using a geographic information system, of historic changes in riparian vegetation based on a time series (1938–39, 1957, 1969, 1987) of aerial photographs.
The flora was diverse, with 185 species of vascular plants identified, 63 of which were exotics. Vegetation was structured vertically along the riverbank gradient into lifeform-defined habitat types: emergent, riparian …

Butterflies Of The Toquima Range, Nevada: Distribution, Natural History, And Comparison To The Toiyabe Range, Erica Fleishman, Dennis D. Murphy, George T. Austin
Great Basin Naturalist
Studies of Great Basin faunas can provide information for landscape-level adaptive management by federal agencies and shed light on potential effects of climate change in continental interior landscapes. To provide such information, we characterized the butterfly fauna of the Toquima Range, a mountain range in the heart of the Great Basin with topography typical of the region. We also compared the butterfly fauna of the Toquima Range to that of the adjacent Toiyabe Range, which is more topographically complex and species rich but less representative of the Great Basin on the whole. We explicitly addressed the effects of area and …
