Influence Of Grazing, Fire, And Rainfall Regime On Plant Species Dynamics In An Ethiopian Perennial Grassland, Michael J. Jacobs May 1999

Influence Of Grazing, Fire, And Rainfall Regime On Plant Species Dynamics In An Ethiopian Perennial Grassland, Michael J. Jacobs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The dominant habitat-type of Omo National Park (ONP), Ethiopia, is grassland. This grassland supports a variety of wild herbivores and indigenous people; the latter hunt large herbivores for subsistence or graze their domestic livestock in the Park. Therefore, an understanding of grassland dynamics is a high priority for ONP management. Grazing and fire are major factors influencing species composition and vegetation change in East African grasslands. Rainfall regime, in turn, can influence both grassland response to grazing and fire. The ONP grasslands occur along a rainfall gradient ranging from subhumid to semiarid. Research objectives were to: (1) test the Milchunas, …

Constructivism And Reconstructionism: Educating Teachers For World Citizenship, Mary Lou Breithorde, Louise Swiniarski May 1999

Constructivism And Reconstructionism: Educating Teachers For World Citizenship, Mary Lou Breithorde, Louise Swiniarski

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Public education is characterized by tension between the goals of enlightening individuals and improving society. In the United States, the emphasis has been on individual needs. We design lessons which respect for child as a maker of meaning. We teach to individual learning styles and are concerned that the curriculum "make sense." Given an ideology which sees the individual as the source of economic and political welfare, we comfortably focus on their intellectual and personal growth and call it “constructivism”. At other times, education for social responsibility took priority. During economic depressions, wars and civic strife, we taught children to …

The Dna Sequence From A Cloned 15 Kilobase Fragment Of The Chlamydomonas Acidophila Mitochondrial Genome And Rna Transcript Production In Response To Cadmium, Scott A. Hoffman May 1999

The Dna Sequence From A Cloned 15 Kilobase Fragment Of The Chlamydomonas Acidophila Mitochondrial Genome And Rna Transcript Production In Response To Cadmium, Scott A. Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydomonas acidophila is a unicellular green alga of the order Chlamydomonadales. Our research efforts were allied along two lines: (1) Characterization of the C. acidophila mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and (2) Elucidation of any molecular events responsible for C. acidophila's heavy metal tolerance. The mitochondrial genomes of the protists have been underrepresented in the sequence databases. Among the protists, the alga genera Chlamydomonas shows a reduced mtDNA content with a highly rearranged gene structure. It was decided to sequence C. acidophila's mtDNA to further elucidate the evolutionary paths among the Chlamydomonads and add to the protist sequence database. A 15 kb …

Simulations Of Snow Distribution And Hydrology In A Mountain Basin, Melannie D. Hartman, Jill S. Baron, Richard B. Lammers, Donald W. Cline, Larry E. Band, Glen E. Liston, Christina L. Tague May 1999

Simulations Of Snow Distribution And Hydrology In A Mountain Basin, Melannie D. Hartman, Jill S. Baron, Richard B. Lammers, Donald W. Cline, Larry E. Band, Glen E. Liston, Christina L. Tague

Faculty Publications

We applied a version of the Regional Hydro‐Ecologic Simulation System (RHESSys) that implements snow redistribution, elevation partitioning, and wind‐driven sublimation to Loch Vale Watershed (LVWS), an alpine‐subalpine Rocky Mountain catchment where snow accumulation and ablation dominate the hydrologic cycle. We compared simulated discharge to measured discharge and the simulated snow distribution to photogrammetrically rectified aerial (remotely sensed) images. Snow redistribution was governed by a topographic similarity index. We subdivided each hillslope into elevation bands that had homogeneous climate extrapolated from observed climate. We created a distributed wind speed field that was used in conjunction with daily measured wind speeds to …

State Regulatory Jurisdiction And The Internet: Letting The Dormant Commerce Clause Lie, James E. Gaylord May 1999

State Regulatory Jurisdiction And The Internet: Letting The Dormant Commerce Clause Lie, James E. Gaylord

Vanderbilt Law Review

Cyberspace seems to pose a dual threat to "Our Federalism." Only one aspect of this threat, however, has captured the scholarly imagination. Commentators have devoted a great deal of attention to the problems of horizontal federalism raised by the new technology. Cyberspace, they point out, is a profoundly integrative social and economic force. As a result, local legislation touching on cyberspace is likely to produce effects beyond local borders. State laws like a recently deceased Georgia statute that arguably would have prohibited all Internet users from "falsely identifying" themselves on- lines convince observers that the information superhighway is a dangerous …

Effects Of Faculty Senate's Site-Based Management Practice On Restructuring Schools To Facilitate Inclusion, Holly Ann Pae May 1999

Effects Of Faculty Senate's Site-Based Management Practice On Restructuring Schools To Facilitate Inclusion, Holly Ann Pae

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The national reform agenda charges schools to address the needs of all students. Unlike prior movements these reform goals have influenced the broader context of education's activities to embrace the principle and practices invested in the Individual with Disabilities Education Act. In response states have developed policies that promote inclusive education. Yet despite these initiatives, students with disabilities continue to receive limited attention in the school reform literature. The purpose of this study was to examine how these contexts of reform serve special education's interests.;Using a multiple case design this study examined the relationship between the school's inclusion level and …

Sequential Development Of The Gassaway Structure In Braxton County, West Virginia, Richard Ford Viso May 1999

Sequential Development Of The Gassaway Structure In Braxton County, West Virginia, Richard Ford Viso

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was undertaken in an effort to reconstruct the development history of the Gassaway dome in Braxton county, West Virginia. Several different analyses were performed to answer questions regarding the timing of the growth of the structure, and mechanisms responsible for the location and shape of the structure.;Interpretation of seismic line CNR-G1 reveals a fan-like distribution of faults (in cross-section), characteristic of strike-slip related positive flower structures. Structure and isopach maps constructed from several hundred wells throughout the study area help constrain the aerial extent of the Gassaway structure, defining it as a dome rather than an anticline. Well …

Productivity And Economic Growth In The Pittsburgh Region From 1850 To 1900, Benjamin Edward Morton May 1999

Productivity And Economic Growth In The Pittsburgh Region From 1850 To 1900, Benjamin Edward Morton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research presents an empirical test of the effect of economic growth on productivity in manufacturing within the Pittsburgh region from 1850 to 1900. Theoretical research in economic geography refers to this as Verdoorn's 'law'. The underlying reason for this relationship is the positive impact of economic growth on technological development, which translates into changes in productivity. This study provides an empirical test of this relationship at a very different scale and time frame than previous studies, namely the counties within the Pittsburgh nodal economic region. The period from 1850 to 1900 was one in which the Pittsburgh region developed …

Locating And Mapping Cemeteries In Loudon County, Virginia, Scott Marshall Sizer May 1999

Locating And Mapping Cemeteries In Loudon County, Virginia, Scott Marshall Sizer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Protecting smaller family-type cemeteries is a difficult task in a rapidly growing area. This paper investigates that ways in which Loudoun County, Virginia addressed cemetery protection concerns. Cemetery locational data was captured from a variety of sources and integrated into the countys geographic information system (GIS). The locational information was gathered through digitization and with a Global Positioning System (GPS). Once the cemetery locational information was in the GIS, it was then integrated into an existing land development process.

The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler May 1999

The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The literature on promotion and tenure in institutions of higher education includes a substantial amount of research on various aspects of faculty productivity. Yet other research concentrates on the organizational structure of higher education. In his 1986 book, Burton Clark called for research that would examine how what he called the enterprise (the local university as opposed to the statewide system) and departments within it interact in important arenas.;This dissertation takes up Clark's challenge to examine the interaction of enterprise and department in promotion and tenure in three areas: goals, structure and operations. Content analysis of faculty handbooks from 25 …

The Development Of A Code Behavior For Holy Name Parish School, Patricia Coonelly Munyan Apr 1999

The Development Of A Code Behavior For Holy Name Parish School, Patricia Coonelly Munyan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to review the current discipline code in the school and to revise it if necessary. The study was carried out at Holy Name Parish School in Camden, New Jersey. The predominantly Hispanic school had a student population of 96 in the sample group, grades five through eight. A committee comprising the intern, one faculty member, five students, and four family representatives reviewed the current code and examined codes of other schools.

The intern examined school records for statistics on student disciplinary problems and found that no formal records existed in this area. For her …
