The Middle East In World Affairs Understanding Iran's Changing Transnational And International Role, Marla Renfro

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

In 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran emerged on the international stage and began to establish itself as a participant in global terrorism. Throughout the period 1979-96, officials linked numerous terrorist actions and operations to Iran; this link could have involve Iran's direct sponsorship or indirect involvement, such as by providing monetary support to operatives. In order to develop strategies to prevent or minimize the threat of terrorist attack, Iran's role in global terrorism must be assessed.

The purpose of this work is threefold: to demonstrate the role taken by Iran in global terrorism from 1979 to 1996, to explain …

Geologic Controls On Mass Movement In The New River Gorge, West Virginia, Jonathan William Frank Remo Aug 1999

Geologic Controls On Mass Movement In The New River Gorge, West Virginia, Jonathan William Frank Remo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Geologic factors, such as bedrock lithology, joints, lineaments, and attitude of bedding were analyzed and evaluated for influences on mass-movement in the New River Gorge. Mass-movement deposits were mapped at a 1:24,000 scale in three study areas within the gorge and a Geographic Information System was developed to analyze the affects of local bedrock geology on the deposits.;Analysis of bedrock lithology revealed that the greater the percentage of quartz sandstone within the gorge, the more area is covered by mass-movement deposits. This trend is related to the preservation potential of the deposits. Stress-release and tectonic joints affect mass movement in …

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan Aug 1999

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Appalachia has always struggled economically due to three main factors: absentee ownership, isolation, and stereotyping. In 1965, Congress created the Appalachian Regional Commission with the mission of providing economic development programs to increase development in the region. Federal highway spending was seen as a key to improving the Appalachian infrastructure.;Today, the debate continues on the effectiveness of federal highway spending in Appalachia. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of federal highway spending on socioeconomic status in Appalachia by analyzing the effects of spending during an economic recovery from 1983--89 and recession 1989--92. Three constructs determine increases …

Automatic Selection Of Optimal Window Size And Shape For Texture Analysis, Joseph Edmund Glotfelty Aug 1999

Automatic Selection Of Optimal Window Size And Shape For Texture Analysis, Joseph Edmund Glotfelty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis is a theoretical and empirical examination of the relationship between texture and scale, and its effects on image classification. This study involved creating a model that automatically selected windows of optimal size according to the location of a pixel within a land cover region and the texture of the surrounding pixels. Large windows were used to get a representative sample of within-class variability in the interior of these regions. Smaller windows were used near the boundaries of land cover regions in order to reduce "edge effect" errors due to between-class variability. This program was tested using a Maximum …

Identifying Structural Differences In Mixed Mesophytic And Northern Hardwood Forests On The Monongahela National Forest Using Remote Sensing Data, John Richard Bender Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis is a study of field data and remotely sensed data to evaluate the structural diversity, texture, spectral and spatial differences between forest stands of three age classes (50--69, 70--89, and >90 years) in the Cheat District on the Monongahela National Forest. The structural diversity was determined with foliage-height profiles for 48 stands ranging from 52 to 148 years old. Structural diversity was highest in the 70--89 and >90 year old stands and lowest in the 50--69 year old stands. The structural characteristics of the 70--89 and >90 year old stands were characterized by greater numbers of larger trees, …

What Is The Significance Of Zelph In The Study Of Book Of Mormon Geography?, Kenneth W. Godfrey Jul 1999

What Is The Significance Of Zelph In The Study Of Book Of Mormon Geography?, Kenneth W. Godfrey

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In June 1834, members of Zion’s Camp discovered skeleton bones that Joseph Smith reportedly revealed as belonging to a “white Lamanite” named Zelph. Many Latter-day Saints have referenced this unearthing as evidence that the Book of Mormon took place in North America, rather than in Mesoamerica. This article explores the significance and reliability of the accounts concerning Zelph’s existence, and it claims that although such a discovery is exciting and insightful, many of the accounts are inconsistent and most of the details surrounding Zelph and his life remain unknown. The skeleton cannot, therefore, provide conclusive evidence for anything, and Latter-day …

Pondering The Word, Dennis Packard, Sandra Packard Jul 1999

Pondering The Word, Dennis Packard, Sandra Packard

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Despite the emphasis that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places on scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon, some members find it difficult to truly love the scriptures. This article claims that by pondering the scriptures often, members can better understand and appreciate the prophetic words. In order to find a deeper love for the scriptures, readers should consider the following details while reading: the setting of a passage; the meaning of various words and phrases; the author’s attitude when he wrote the passage; the possible comparisons between passages; the possible implied messages of the authors; the possible …

A Mesoamerican System Of Weights And Measures? Did The Ancient Peoples Of Mesoamerica Use A System Of Weights And Scales In Measuring Goods And Their Values?, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Ancient Mesoamericans used some systems of weights and measures; items in the market, though, were usually sold by volume. The Mesoamerican weights and measures may coincide with the weights and measures described in Alma 11 of the Book of Mormon, but more research is necessary in order to make conclusive claims.

B. H. Roberts And Book Of Mormon Scholarship, Davis Bitton Jul 1999

B. H. Roberts And Book Of Mormon Scholarship, Davis Bitton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Brigham Henry Roberts, a Book of Mormon scholar in the early twentieth century, was a pioneer in his field. He conducted research regarding the culture and the geography of the Book of Mormon peoples in an attempt to determine the setting of the Book of Mormon. His extensive work in this area has significantly influenced the progress of Book of Mormon research. Roberts also enthusiastically defended the book when others criticized it. He was able to do so effectively because of his study of and familiarity with the Book of Mormon. Roberts did, however, have a few limitations, the most …

A failure to find the PROM-1 mine before the break proved fatal for both deminers, as the new No 1, who had been No 2 prior to the break, more than likely stepped on the mine unknowingly, in the presumed ‘cleared’ area, while both deminers were probably about to don their PPE before start of work.

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley Jul 1999

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley

Theses and Dissertations

“The Good Morrow” is a collection of original poetry that explores the idea of place. The poetry cites various landscapes across a large map of geography and imagination, beginning with poems, in section one, that make reference to conventional homes we grow up in and often move away from. The second and third sections involve a psychological exploration of home, investigating movement among domestic space, cities, and natural landscapes. The speakers in the poems might be thought of as “sea-discoverers,” as John Donne wrote, who explore the world and in the process make discoveries about the worlds inside themselves. I …

Habitat Use And Subspecific Status Of Merlins, Falco Columbarius, Wintering In Central Utah, Donald L. Haney, Clayton M. White Jul 1999

Habitat Use And Subspecific Status Of Merlins, Falco Columbarius, Wintering In Central Utah, Donald L. Haney, Clayton M. White

Great Basin Naturalist

Most ornithological literature for Utah reports the status of the Merlin (Falco columbarius) as rare or scarce. Only the most recently published checklists (Behle and Perry 1975, Behle et al. 1985) record it as uncommon. Likewise, a 1998 printed checklist (Utah Ornithological Society 1998) lists it as uncommon. Also misrepresented in the literature are the status and distribution of the 3 rather distinct subspecies, each of which occupies dissimilar habitats during the breeding season. We made random observations of Merlins in northern Utah beginning in the 1950s and then studied them continuously between 1992 and 1997 in Utah …

History Of The Naming Of The Ferruginous Hawk, Neil D. Woffinden Jul 1999

History Of The Naming Of The Ferruginous Hawk, Neil D. Woffinden

Great Basin Naturalist

The Ferruginous Hawk, a breeding bird endemic to North America, was named Falco ferrugineus in 1838 by H. Lichtenstein, curator of the Berlin Zoological Museum. The type was collected by F. Deppe near present day Monterey, California. In 1844 G.R. Gray of the British Museum assigned the name Buteo regalis to a Ferruginous Hawk specimen of unknown origin, but perhaps donated to the museum by John Phillips, a renowned British geologist. The species was known as Falco (Buteo) ferrugineus until the 1920s when it was discovered that this epithet was occupied. The next name in priority was Gray's Buteo regalis …

Effects Of Habitat Type And Degradation On Avian Species Richness In Great Basin Riparian Habitats, Ian G. Warkentin, J. Michael Reed Jul 1999

Effects Of Habitat Type And Degradation On Avian Species Richness In Great Basin Riparian Habitats, Ian G. Warkentin, J. Michael Reed

Great Basin Naturalist

The overwhelming majority of bird species in the Great Basin region are found in riparian habitats. However, most previous research on the impact of change in habitat condition through degradation on these bird communities failed to account for the large intersite differences, in both habitat type and extent of degradation. We examined songbird communities in 4 riparian habitat types (meadows, willow-, birch-, and aspen-dominated forest stands) during summers 1994 (last year of a 7-yr drought) and 1995 (following the 6th wettest winter recorded) in the Toiyabe Mountain Range of central Nevada. Habitat degradation significantly influenced bird species richness in riparian …

The accident occurred at a distance of 18.2m from the road – datum line, in the “cleared” area where the vegetation was very thoroughly removed by vertical cutting – using an axe. Accident happened when the sign for the break was given, while the deminers were leaving the minefield towards the Control point. The cause of the accident is the PROM –1 mine activated with pressure.
