Comment, D. Rochleau, Claudia Radel Jan 1999

Comment, D. Rochleau, Claudia Radel

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Brosius raises a series of questions that emanate from recent encounters between critical anthropology and environmental discourses and movements. Drawing upon insights from feminist theory, we propose to expand and enrich these questions as they relate to intersections of identity and environmental movements, policy, and positionality. Brosius’s analysis of research on environmental social movements, discourse, and images repeatedly touches on the complex processes of identity and representation. Perhaps most striking is his implicit dichotomization of essential and strategic identities. Our comments first focus on the issue of environmental essentialisms, their deployment by various actors, and their potential unmasking by researchers. …

Agriculture, Landscape And Human Impact In Some Karst Areas Of Italy, Ezio Burri, Benedetta Castiglioni, Ugo Sauro Jan 1999

Agriculture, Landscape And Human Impact In Some Karst Areas Of Italy, Ezio Burri, Benedetta Castiglioni, Ugo Sauro

International Journal of Speleology

Italy is made up for about 1/5 of its surface by soluble rocks, which represent the arena of karst environments. The karst morpho-units, some hundreds, are mainly distributed inside the alpine structure of the Mediterranean mountains. A very large number of rock formations are present, different in facies, lithology, age, etc. Among these, carbonate rocks prevail, followed by gypsum and salt. Most of the carbonate rocks are limestones sedimented in a platform environment and they show a wide range of porosity, frequency of fractures and bedding planes. The climatic processes, the expression of some different sub-types of Mediterranean climate (from …

Land Use In The Karstic Lands In The Mediterranean Region, Ibrahim Atalay Jan 1999

Land Use In The Karstic Lands In The Mediterranean Region, Ibrahim Atalay

International Journal of Speleology

Karstic lands have special importance in terms of soil formation and land-use. Soil appears only on the flat and slightly undulating karstic lands, while soils are found along the cracks and bedding surfaces between the layers on the hilly karst areas although these lands are rocky in appearance. Karstic lands in the hilly area are not conducive to cultivation. But rocky areas create a favourable habitat for the growth of forests except in an arid climate. Because the tree roots easily follow and develop along the cracks in the limestone. As a general rule soil erosion does not occur on …

Land Use And Human Impact In The Dinaric Karst, Ivan Gams, Matej Gabrovec

International Journal of Speleology

The article presents Dinaric karst, human impacts in the area, and its long history of deforestation, transformation into stony semi-desert, and a century long reforestation, where plans to restore the primary thick soil were just hoping against hope.

Environmental Vulnerability And Agriculture In The Karstic Domain: Landscape Indicators And Cases In The Atlas Highlands, Morocco, Brahim Akdim, Mohammed Amyay Jan 1999

Environmental Vulnerability And Agriculture In The Karstic Domain: Landscape Indicators And Cases In The Atlas Highlands, Morocco, Brahim Akdim, Mohammed Amyay

International Journal of Speleology

After the brief presentation of the major karstic areas in Morocco, the article focused essentially on the Atlas mountains to investigate the impact of the agriculture on the natural systems equilibrium. Socio-economic changes (demographic pressure, escalation of the landscape use, utilisation of new techniques in water harvesting, etc...) have sometimes fathered mechanisms of degradation. Many indicators seem to reflect these mechanisms. The pedologic indicators, soil erosion, the hydrologic and geomorphic indicators, are apprehended to demonstrate existent correlation between different variables and the often negative impacts of land over-use in the karstic domain of the Middle Atlas.

Local Coherence And Its Limits: A Second Look At Second Sentences, Desmond Allison, Susheela Varghese, Siew Mei Wu Jan 1999

Local Coherence And Its Limits: A Second Look At Second Sentences, Desmond Allison, Susheela Varghese, Siew Mei Wu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Our article takes up Joy Reid's (1996) proposal that second sentences deserve a second look in academic writing research and pedagogy. Reid's data and commentaries indicate that second sentences, the sentences following topic sentences, make important but generally underrated contributions to the (in)coherence of students' written paragraphs. Her study, in a U.S. university, found that English as a second language (ESL) student writers often developed paragraphs that did not meet the expectations of experienced native English speaker (NES) readers. We offer a contextualized critique and partial replication of Reid's exploratory study. Our research, in Singapore, investigates second sentence writing by …

A Submersible Battery-Powered Flow Injection (Fi) Sensor For The Determination Of Nitrate In Estuarine And Coastal Waters., Anthony R.J. David, Trevor Mccormack, Paul J. Worsfold Jan 1999

A Submersible Battery-Powered Flow Injection (Fi) Sensor For The Determination Of Nitrate In Estuarine And Coastal Waters., Anthony R.J. David, Trevor Mccormack, Paul J. Worsfold

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The design, construction and performance of a remotely deployed submersible flow injection-based nutrient (total oxidized nitrogen) sensor are described. The sensor featured a custom-built microcomputer and a solid-state, flow-through spectrophotometric detector, and the derivatization chemistry was based on in-line copper-cadmium reduction of nitrate to nitrite, and diazotization with N1NED and sulphanilamide. The limit of detection was 0.0014 mg l(-1) NO3-N and the linear range was 0.0014- 0.77 mg l(-1) with a 260 microl sample volume and a 20 mm path length flow cell. Results from submersed deployments in the Tamar estuary and North Sea are also reported.

Fertilizing The Weeds: The New Deal's Rural Poverty Program In West Virginia., Kevin John Cahill Jan 1999

Fertilizing The Weeds: The New Deal's Rural Poverty Program In West Virginia., Kevin John Cahill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1933, the New Deal launched its rural poverty program to mitigate suffering and rectify some of the underlying causes of chronic rural poverty. The rural rehabilitation program, which was the New Deal's primary method of assisted low-income commercial farmers, provided low-interest loans and supervision. The rural resettlement and land retirement program resettled families living on submarginal land and converted submarginal farmland to public forestland, game refugees, or recreational parks. Despite the fact that the New Deal's rural poverty program was reorganized several times, and was administered by several different agencies including Federal Emergency Relief Administration, the Resettlement Administration, the …

Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs Jan 1999

Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs

Nebraska Anthropologist

Missouri's bid for statehood reflected the struggle to extend the southern slave culture onto the western frontier of settlement. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and the Missouri Compromise set specific geographic boundaries for the extension of slavery, which in turn created distinctive patterns of migration and settlement on the frontier. The Platte Purchase region of northwest Missouri is one of the areas that reflect slavery's influence on settlement. This paper will discuss slave ownership, the need for slavery, and explain the geographic distribution of slaves in the Platte region.

A Gis Design For Honeybee Management Prototype And Assessment., Jesse Peter Bellavance Jan 1999

A Gis Design For Honeybee Management Prototype And Assessment., Jesse Peter Bellavance

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis project is to design and develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) operation for the primary purpose of managing apiary site information by the state honeybee inspector for West Virginia. Presently, information related to each apiary site is recorded through the use of registration forms, which are mailed and later stored in file cabinets. At this point the flow of information concerning the practice of beekeeping is stymied. Using these filed registration forms as a useful database of information is unwieldy, if not impossible. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a GIS system …

The Fernow Experimental Forest: An Analysis Of Historical Change., Jennifer Ann Mccullough Jan 1999

The Fernow Experimental Forest: An Analysis Of Historical Change., Jennifer Ann Mccullough

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three sets of aerial photographs were employed to assess the historical changes within the US Forest Service (USFS) Fernow Experimental Forest in Parsons, West Virginia. The Fernow Experimental Forest was almost entirely clear-cut in the early part of the 20th century prior to its establishment in the 1930s. The USFS photographs acquired in 1956/58, 1972, and 1985 were the main source of data. The photographs were stereoscopically interpreted to identify mature forest, as well as selective cutting, clear-cutting, and areas that were regenerating following logging. The logging classes included areas of selective cutting, clear-cutting, and areas that were regenerating from …

Uneven Development Of Nature: An Historical Geography Of Ohiopyle State Park., Richard James Hoch Jan 1999

Uneven Development Of Nature: An Historical Geography Of Ohiopyle State Park., Richard James Hoch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the use of nature in the uneven development of Ohiopyle State Park, located sixty miles to the southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The production of this park resulted from a complex system of socio-spatial relationships that existed between Ohiopyle and Pittsburgh during the city's industrialization. The thesis has two objectives: (1) to demonstrate that the park is a space of produced nature, resulting from decades of human activity; and (2) to illustrate the various ways in which the production of this park is an extension of the production of the Pittsburgh industrial space. The thesis addresses these objectives …

"No Matter Where You Go, There You Are" But How Do We Find You? Location Determination Technologies For Cellular Enhanced 9-1-1 Service., Wendy Sue Geary Jan 1999

"No Matter Where You Go, There You Are" But How Do We Find You? Location Determination Technologies For Cellular Enhanced 9-1-1 Service., Wendy Sue Geary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recently there has been an explosive growth in the use of cellular telephones. Many people purchase "cell phones" specifically for the safety factor, expecting the same type of Enhanced 911 service they receive from landline phones. However, the only 911 service currently available for cellular callers in most areas is Basic 911, which means that emergency response time may be less than optimal. A recent Federal Communications Commission regulation promotes the provision of Enhanced 911 service for wireless customers. A key component of this Enhanced service is "Automatic Location Information" ("ALI"), a computerized report of caller location that allows calls …

The Effects Of Aluminum And Nitrogen On Mycorrhizal And Non-Mycorrhizal Tulip Poplar., Heidi Brauer Lux Jan 1999

The Effects Of Aluminum And Nitrogen On Mycorrhizal And Non-Mycorrhizal Tulip Poplar., Heidi Brauer Lux

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Elevated levels of acidic deposition are leading to higher concentrations of aluminum (Al) in the soil solutions of some forest ecosystems. For this thesis, I performed a suite of experiments to investigate the effects of four interconnected factors on the growth and nutrition of Liriodendron tulipifera L. (tulip poplar): 1. Al exposure in solution; 2. mycorrhizal presence and percent colonization; 3. N source ratio; and 4. N level. My studies of L. tulipifera demonstrate a sensitivity to Al at concentrations as low as 100 µM, ranking it among the most Al sensitive tree species ever studied. Selected Al tolerant species …

An Evaluation Of Avhrr Ndvi Data For Monitoring Western Spruce Budworm Defoliation., Zainal Abdul Majeed

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis is an evaluation of the possibility of using NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite imagery to map defoliation by the western spruce budworm in Washington and Oregon. The AVHRR data was obtained as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maximum value composites from the USGS. Additional data sets included ten years of defoliation data (1989-1998), an EPA ecoregion map, a USFS forest type group map, and a digital elevation model. A biogeographical analysis of the distribution of the defoliation and its potential habitat showed that defoliation was most extensive over the altitude ranges over which the habitat …

The Origins Of Rapids In The Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia., Dawn Anne Moore Jan 1999

The Origins Of Rapids In The Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia., Dawn Anne Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rapids occur where supercritical flow conditions are present (Kieffer, 1985). Supercritical flow, resulting from a local decrease in stream depth or acceleration in flow, is commonly produced where voluminous surficial deposits or bedrock outcrops constrict the stream channel. Mapping at 1:10,000-scale shows that most rapids in the lower New River Gorge, are a result of surficial deposits, including valley-wall mass movement, tributary debris fans, and alluvium. Few rapids occur at bedrock outcrops. Half of the rapids are predominantly the result of valley-wall mass movement, including debris flow, rock fall, and debris slide/complex failures. Tributary debris-fan deposits, derived from debris flows …
