Invariant Measures For Set-Valued Dynamical Systems, Walter Miller, Ethan Akin Jan 1999

Invariant Measures For Set-Valued Dynamical Systems, Walter Miller, Ethan Akin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A continuous map on a compact metric space, regarded as a dynamical system by iteration, admits invariant measures. For a closed relation on such a space, or, equivalently, an upper semicontinuous set-valued map, there are several concepts which extend this idea of invariance for a measure. We prove that four such are equivalent. In particular, such relation invariant measures arise as projections from shift invariant measures on the space of sample paths. There is a similarly close relationship between the ideas of chain recurrence for the set-valued system and for the shift on the sample path space. ©1999 American Mathematical …

Amoebiasis: A 10 Year Retrospective Study At The University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, I. Jamaiah, K.C. Shekhar

Pre-2000

A hospital based retrospective study of amoebiasis was carried out for a ten-year period at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Of the 51 cases traced, 30 (59) had amoebic dysentery, 20 (39) were amoebic liver abscess (ALA) and one patient had both conditions. Entameoba histolytica trophozoites were identified in 13 (43) of the amoebic dysenteric stools and 9 (30) from biopsy. Of the 20 (39) ALA cases, only one showed parasites in the stool and biopsy. Majority of the patients with dysentery were Malays while Chinese comprised 40 with ALA. Males predominated overall with a male female ratio of 3:1, …

Blurring Of Vision Due To Vlm, D. Kamala, Rohela Mahmud, Khairul Anuar Abdullah, Jamaiah Ibrahim

Pre-2000

A thirty two year old taxi driver presented with complaints of headache, nausea, vomiting and blurring of vision of the left eye of two days duration. He was found to have an acute anterior uveities and secondary glaucoma. On further examination patient was also found to have a neuroretinitis and phlebitis in the same eye. A worm was found in the anterior chamber and it was removed via a limbal incision under local anaesthesia. The worm-like structure sent to the Department of Parasitology was identified as Gnathostoma spinigerum. The patient was treated with topical eye drops and oral steroids at …

Review Of The Applications Of Neural Networks In Chemical Process Control - Simulation And Online Implementation, Mohd Azlan Hussain Jan 1999

Review Of The Applications Of Neural Networks In Chemical Process Control - Simulation And Online Implementation, Mohd Azlan Hussain

Pre-2000

As a result of good modeling capabilities, neural networks have been used extensively for a number of chemical engineering applications such as sensor data analysis, fault detection and nonlinear process identification. However, only in recent years, with the upsurge in the research on nonlinear control, has its use in process control been widespread. This paper intend to provide an extensive review of the various applications utilizing neural networks for chemical process control, both in simulation and online implementation. We have categorized the review under three major control schemes; predictive control, inverse-model-based control, and adaptive control methods, respectively. In each of …

Judicial Review Of Initiatives And Referendums In Which Majorities Vote On Minorities’ Citizenship, Sylvia R. Lazos Jan 1999

Judicial Review Of Initiatives And Referendums In Which Majorities Vote On Minorities’ Citizenship, Sylvia R. Lazos

Scholarly Works

In this Article, Professor Lazos examines initiatives and referendums in which a majority is in a position to vote on the content of a minority's democratic civic standing. Case law fails to set forth a single test for judicial review; consequently, doctrinal and theoretical coherence in this area is nonexistent. Professor Lazos proposes a test that takes into account social dynamics and focuses on the impact of these measures. First, she examines outcomes over the last three decades of approximately eighty such initiatives and referendums, from the anti-integration movement of the sixties to today's ideological and cultural versions, such as …

Democracy And Inclusion: The Role Of The Judge In A Pluralist Polity, Sylvia R. Lazos Jan 1999

Democracy And Inclusion: The Role Of The Judge In A Pluralist Polity, Sylvia R. Lazos

Scholarly Works

The Supreme Court plays a critical role in resolving clashes between majority and minority interests and perspectives. The Equal Protection Clause, and at times the Due Process Clause, have become key vehicles for considering the most problematic intergroup conflicts that divide our society. Prior to this article, the Court heard cases dealing with affirmative action in government procurement programs, legislative districts designed to increase minority representation, state sponsored male-only military schooling, and a state constitutional amendment that would have proscribed antidiscrimination legislation protecting gay men and lesbians. While the Court declined to challenge California's anti-affirmative action referendum (Proposition 209) and …

The Effects Of Urbanization And Human Disturbance Upon Plant Community Structure And Bird Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance In A Natural Forested Area (Forest Park) In Portland, Oregon, Nancy Ellen Broshot

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of urbanization and continual human disturbance on the plant and avian communities of Forest Park and forested lands surrounding Portland, Oregon, were studied. I examined characteristics of plant and avian communities at 25 sites, 24 which were in Forest Park and surrounding areas and one which was in the Ancient Forest Preserve (old-growth stand) northwest of Forest Park. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, ANOV A, and Bonferonni/Dunn. Seven variables were selected representing different urbanization gradients. An additional covariable coded for the old-growth stand, allowing it to be used as a control.

Many tree variables, especially those related …
