As Different As Night And Day: Palamon And Arcite Reconsidered, William Hamilton Dec 1999

As Different As Night And Day: Palamon And Arcite Reconsidered, William Hamilton

Masters Theses

Through an analysis of characterization and the sub-text of infernal allusions to the myths of Orpheus and the ravishment of Proserpina, my thesis demonstrates that the Theban cousins Palamon and Arcite are not only distinct but diametrically opposed characters who are more central to The Knight' s Tale than the present critical consensus allows. Chapter I analyzes Charles Muscarine, who so convincingly put an end to the once lively debate over the characterization of the cousins that the proposition that they are indistinguishable remains an a priori assumption in the criticism of the poem to this day. Chapter II analyzes …

Fatal Cysticercosis By Taenia Crassiceps (Cyclophyllidea: Taeniidae) In A Presumed Immunocompromised Canine Host, Eric P. Hoberg, William Ebinger, James A. Render

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cysticercosis in a canine host (Canis jamiliaris) attributable to the taeniid cestode Taenia crassiceps is reported for the first time in North America. Numerous parent and daughter cysticerci occurred in a massive intrapleural and intraperitoneal infection in an apparently immunocompromised host. The largest cysticerci were ovoid to elongate. 5-9 mm in maximum length. and armed with 32-34 rostellar hooks in two rows; small hooks measured 114-143 μm long (avg. = 124 ± 8.2 μm). and large hooks were 156-180 μm (avg. = 163 ± 7.4 μm). Taenia crassiceps is widespread in boreal North America and, like a number …

Racial Encounters In The American Theatre: Whiteness And Eugene O'Neill, Blackness And August Wilson, C̦Iğdem Üsekes Dec 1999

Racial Encounters In The American Theatre: Whiteness And Eugene O'Neill, Blackness And August Wilson, C̦Iğdem Üsekes

Theses and Dissertations

Relatively few scholars have investigated racial representations in modern American drama. Even fewer scholars have undertaken to analyze depictions of whiteness in American letters, although “white studies” is slowly assuming legitimacy in the academy in the 1990s. “Racial Encounters in the American Theatre” therefore attempts to bridge this gap in literary and critical studies by examining the black portraiture of Eugene O'Neill and the white portraiture of August Wilson. The work of both playwrights attests to their deep and consistent involvement with their Racial Other, who resurfaces in play after play. Maintaining that the United States resembles a postcolonial society, …

Comparison Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling Approaches For Red River Basin, Sajjad Ahmad, Slobodan P. Simonovic Dec 1999

Comparison Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling Approaches For Red River Basin, Sajjad Ahmad, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A devastating flood in Red River valley in 1997 emphasized the need to study the flood control measures in the Red River basin using state of the art modeling tools. The Red River and its floodplains can be modeled using one-dimensional, quasi two-dimensional or fully two-dimensional hydrodynamic models. Each modeling approach has its own advantages and limitations. The main purpose of this report is a comparison between one-dimensional (or quasi two dimensional) and fully two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling approaches for modeling floods in the Red River basin.

A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, MIKE 21, coupled with Geographic Information System (GIS) …

A Study Of The Sublime In English Romantic Aesthetics, Derek T. Leuenberger Dec 1999

A Study Of The Sublime In English Romantic Aesthetics, Derek T. Leuenberger

Student Work

The nature and role of sublime experience has been an enduring topic of discussion in the history of aesthetics, dating back nearly 2000 years to the rhetorical sublime of Longinus. The emergence of English romanticism at the juncture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrought substantial change on conceptions of the sublime, driven primarily by Immanuel Kant’s transcendental philosophy. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Percy Bysshe Shelley each develop a theory of sublimity grounded in the expression of unified and universal experience in human consciousness. Naturally, certain philosophical differences arise within the theoretical discourse of the authors - most …

Lost In The Savage Garden: A Nihilistic Interpretation Of Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles"., Angela S. Mcmullen

Student Work

This study examines Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles in light of the nihilist tradition. Nihilism is defined in this study as the absence of meaning. Rice uses vampires to explore problems created through this philosophy that ultimately leaves a void in human existence. In a sense, this study is an exploration of the ways which humanity fails to find an adequate reason to live. Louis begins the exploration by searching for God. Unable to find supernatural answers in his animated state, he falls into spiritual decay. Lestat, however, takes an aggressive approach patterned on Fredrick Nietzsche. By killing God and giving …

The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha Dec 1999

The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In order to manage social stigma, some individuals construct and enact a social interaction strategy known as passing, which is "a performance in which one presents himself as what one is not" (Rohy, 1996). Based on interviews with lesbians and gay men of color, this article suggests that the process of passing is not based upon a rejection of stigmatized identity, but situationally employed to resist social oppression.

Alteration Associated With Gold Deposition At The Getchell, Carlin-Type Gold Deposit, North-Central Nevada, Tracy Lynn Cail Dec 1999

Alteration Associated With Gold Deposition At The Getchell, Carlin-Type Gold Deposit, North-Central Nevada, Tracy Lynn Cail

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alteration at the Getchell deposit was examined to determine the effects of ore-bearing fluids on host lithologies and the relationship between K-bearing alteration minerals and Au deposition. The geochemistry of unaltered to highly altered and mineralized rocks from the Getchell deposit was quantified for 54 samples collected along 14 transects in calcareous siltstone, carbonaceous limestone, and a rhyodacitic dike. Each transect was collected along a single homogeneous bed that could be followed from visibly unaltered waste rock into high-grade ore.

Calculated elemental gains and losses record an increase in the concentrations of Au, Hg, Sb, Se, Si, Te, Tl, and …

Boundary Control For Automated Sweeping Of Finite Element Meshes, Robert A. Kerr Dec 1999

Boundary Control For Automated Sweeping Of Finite Element Meshes, Robert A. Kerr

Theses and Dissertations

Finite element analysis depends greatly upon a high-quality mesh to be able to provide reasonably accurate answers to engineering problems. Models that need to be analyzed using finite element analysis are becoming increasingly more complex, and correspondingly harder to mesh with good quality. Skew is one quality metric which can cause problems with finite element analyses. This thesis explains how skew is calculated, discusses two common sources of skew: multiply-linked surfaces with interval constraints, and biased edge meshes. Two methods of lessening skew in surface meshes are then presented: the skew control algorithm, and the curve morphing algorithm. These algorithms …

Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski Dec 1999

Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Popular and Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View," Peter Swirski discusses the role and status of popular fiction in contemporary culture. Starting with the basic question, "Who needs popular fiction?," he surveys select sociological evidence and prevailing aesthetic arguments in order to take stock of the ways in which highbrow literature and popular fiction relate to each other. He begins with statistical and socio-economic data which casts a different lights on many myths prevailing in scholarship as well as in general social and cultural discourse, such as the death of the novel, the alleged decline of the reading …

Théophile Gautier And The Orient, F. Elizabeth Dahab Dec 1999

Théophile Gautier And The Orient, F. Elizabeth Dahab

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Théophile Gautier and the Orient," F. Elizabeth Dahab discusses the function of the Orient in general, and in particular, the function of Ancient Egypt in some of Gautier's contes fantastiques written between 1835 and 1857. Gautier and many of his contemporaries including Baudelaire wanted to escape from a society dominated by the idea of progress. They expressed deep doubt in many of their texts and strived to find solace in the notion of permanence in art characteristic of Ancient Egyptian architecture and mortuary customs. They also believed that Ancient Egypt may provide an answer to humanity's quest …

The Impact Of Prayer On The Ministries Of D.L. Moody, C.H. Spurgeon, And Billy Graham: A Descriptive Study, Rodney Baker Dec 1999

The Impact Of Prayer On The Ministries Of D.L. Moody, C.H. Spurgeon, And Billy Graham: A Descriptive Study, Rodney Baker

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study describes the significance of prayer in the nineteenth century ministries of evangelist-revivalist D. L. Moody, pastor-evangelist C. H. Spurgeon, and the twentieth-century ministry of evangelist Billy Graham. Furthermore, a description of the three most successful evangelical ministries of the last two centuries will demonstrate the vital role of prayer in their effective Christian ministries.

After extensively researching the lives of D. L. Moody, C. H. Spurgeon, and Billy Graham, it is clear that prayer played a major role in their lives and, according to personal statements, was a key to their success. While various facets of their ministry …

Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson Dec 1999

Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson

Duke Law Journal

Professor Atkinson hopes William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust will replace Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as our favorite story of lawyerly virtue. In both stories, a white male lawyer and his protege try to free a black man falsely accused of a capital crime. But below these superficial similarities, Professor Atkinson finds fundamental differences. To Kill a Mockingbird, with its father-knows-best attorney, Atticus Pinch, celebrates lawyerly paternalism; Intruder in the Dust, through its aristocratic black hero, Lucas Beauchamp, and his lay allies, challenges the rule of lawyers, if not law itself The first urges us to serve others …

How Permanent Became Temporary In Del Monte Dunes, Michael C. Levine

Duke Law Journal

Regulatory takings are like car accidents. They fascinate us. We cannot help slowing down to look. What a disaster, we say to ourselves. We are so glad it did not happen to us. But we wonder if we could be next, We think about who is at fault, who should pay for the damages, and how it all could have been avoided in the first place And we question how the rules of the road could be improved so that such collisions in the future could be averted.

Reciprocal Transplantation Of The Desert Soil Crust: Can It Be Done?, Christina D. Cole Dec 1999

Reciprocal Transplantation Of The Desert Soil Crust: Can It Be Done?, Christina D. Cole

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A 100 meter X 100 meter study site was chosen at White Rock Springs in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada. To examine Syntrichia caninervis, a desert crustal moss, reciprocal transplantations (20 mm and 40 mm diameter cores) were performed between shaded to shaded, exposed to exposed, and shaded to exposed microsites to determine if it was possible to transplant the study organism with reasonable survivorship. Transplants were inspected following rain events for percent hydration, number of dead stems, and change in percent cover. Data indicated that there was a low mortality rate of S. caninervis stems, and few …
