Community Benchmarks Program

Introduction: This study reports information gathered through a web site evaluation of the 35 municipalities in Onondaga County. The results will be included in a report to each municipality. The report rates municipal web sites. It gives a score (on a scale of 1 to 110) for each site and ideas for the improvement of each site. It also provides information on how to develop a web site for those municipalities interested in starting this process

The Initial Work And Education Experiences Of Early School Leavers: A Comparative Study Of Australia And The United States, Stephen Lamb, Russell Rumberger Dec 1999

The Initial Work And Education Experiences Of Early School Leavers: A Comparative Study Of Australia And The United States, Stephen Lamb, Russell Rumberger

LSAY Research Reports

This study examines the experiences of early school leavers from the United States and Australia in the first two years beyond secondary school. The results of the study indicate that similar percentages of students left school early in the United States and Australia - 21 percent in the United States and 22 percent in Australia. In both countries the study indicated that school leaving rates were substantially higher for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, for students attending public and government school, and for students with low achievement levels. The study reported considerable differences between the two countries in when early …

Liberating Lawyers: Diverging Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson Dec 1999

Liberating Lawyers: Diverging Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson

Scholarly Publications

Professor Atkinson hopes William Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust will replace Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird as our favorite story of lawyerly virtue. In both stories, a white male lawyer and his protégé try to free a black man falsely accused of a capital crime. But below these superficial similarities, Professor Atkinson finds fundamental differences. To Kill a Mockingbird, with its father-knows-best attorney, Atticus Finch, celebrates lawyerly paternalism; Intruder in the Dust, through its aristocratic black hero, Lucas Beauchamp, and his lay allies, challenges the rule of lawyers, if not law itself. The first urges us to …

Sterilization In The United States: Prevalence And Controversies, Carey Brown Dec 1999

Sterilization In The United States: Prevalence And Controversies, Carey Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There have been many breakthroughs in birth control technologies, many of which have been beneficial for women. However, many feminists who advocate reproductive freedom also warn that freedom for some might lead to further oppression for others. The case in point is the practice of tubal ligation in the United States. Conflict theory indicates that the field of medicine is a social structure that is based upon capitalistic ideology and serves to perpetuate inequality. Feminist theory argues that medicine systematically disempowers women and that notions of family are very narrowly defined. This study examined the prevalence of tubal ligation among …

The War In Heaven: Michael And Messiah In Revelation 12, Leo R. Percer Dec 1999

The War In Heaven: Michael And Messiah In Revelation 12, Leo R. Percer

Faculty Dissertations

The book of Revelation is notorious for an almost chaotic diversity of interpretations, no doubt as a result of the surprising symbols like those found in other apocalypses. The book is saturated in apocalyptic symbolism, and many of the characters are not so much named as caricatured. Revelation 12, a central chapter both in location and theology, contains characters whose importance and background have been thoroughly investigated: (1) the celestial woman, (2) the dragon (Satan), and (3) the Messianic child. John throws an unexpected name into this mix of characters--the angel Michael.

This study examines the role of Michael in …

Pastoral Evangelism: A Model For Effective Evangelism As Demonstrated By The Ministries Of John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, And John William Jones In The Revival Of The Army Of Northern Virginia In 1863, William E. Brown

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the effectiveness of a pastoral evangelism methodology. John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, and John William Jones exemplified this methodology while ministering in the camps of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Chapter one explains the research parameters and introduces the historical epoch of Broadus's, Dickinson's, and Jones's army camp ministry. The revival occurred at the end of a transitional period in American revivalism. The chapter surveys sociological, theological, and denominational events in the period 1840-1861 which influenced the men's formation in ministry. This covers the period of the childhood of Broadus, Dickinson, …

Roosevelt Island: Completing An Urban Community, Karin M. Kilgore Dec 1999

Roosevelt Island: Completing An Urban Community, Karin M. Kilgore

Architecture Senior Theses

The thesis became an architectural exploration of what makes neighborhood and community at two scales: at the scale of the city (macrocosm), represented by the urban plan; and at the scale of the individual (microcosm), represented by the concept of the house and housing. At these two contrasting scales, the main focus of the study was to explore how an urban design can shape community and to explore the role that housing plays in the making of urban fabric/neighborhood. These two main issues of urban planning and housing prototypes, and the set of questions they generated, became the framework for …

Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser Dec 1999

Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser

Animal Welfare Collection

Since the 1970s, scientists studying animal welfare and philosophers writing about animal ethics have worked toward the common goal of understanding and articulating our proper relationship to animals of other species. However, the two groups approached this task using such different concepts, assumptions, and vocabulary that they functioned as two distinct ‘‘cultures’’ with little mutual understanding or communication. Some of the best known ethical writing created barriers for scientists because it tended (1) to focus only on the level of the individual rather than making some decisions at the level of the population, ecosystem or species, (2) to advocate single …

Scale-Model Comprehension By Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Valerie A. Kuhlmeier, Sarah T. Boysen, Kimberly L. Mukobi Dec 1999

Scale-Model Comprehension By Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Valerie A. Kuhlmeier, Sarah T. Boysen, Kimberly L. Mukobi

Sentience Collection

The ability of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to recognize the correspondence between a scale model and its real-world referent was examined. In Experiments 1 and 2, an adult female and a young adult male watched as an experimenter hid a miniature model food in 1 of 4 sites in a scale model. Then, the chimpanzees were given the opportunity to find the real food item that had been hidden in the analogous location in the real room. The female performed significantly above chance, whereas the male performed at chance level. Experiments 3 and 4 tested 5 adult and 2 adolescent chimpanzees …

Polyphase Tectonics And Metamorphism And Their Relation To Movement On The Monte Largo Shear Zone In The Manzano Mountains, Central New Mexico, Douglas A. Raszewski Dec 1999

Polyphase Tectonics And Metamorphism And Their Relation To Movement On The Monte Largo Shear Zone In The Manzano Mountains, Central New Mexico, Douglas A. Raszewski

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Proterozoic rocks of the Manzano Mountains of central New Mexico preserve evidence of multiple deformation events. The dominant foliation is the northeast-trending S2 that overprints the older S1 foliation in most places. Later S3 fabrics are present in many areas as well as S4 crenulations in rocks from Monte de Abajo Canyon. Petrographic and field studies were performed on rocks from Monte Largo Canyon, which contains the Monte Largo shear zone, and rocks from Monte de Abajo Canyon ~3km south of the shear zone. These studies were done to help constrain the timing of the movement on the shear …
