Critical Behavior Of Disordered Quantum Magnets: The Relevance Of Rare Regions, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick Oct 1999

Critical Behavior Of Disordered Quantum Magnets: The Relevance Of Rare Regions, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of quenched disorder on the critical properties of itinerant quantum antiferromagnets and ferromagnets are considered. Particular attention is paid to locally ordered spatial regions that are formed in the presence of quenched disorder even when the bulk system is still in the paramagnetic phase. These rare regions or local moments are reflected in the existence of spatially inhomogeneous saddle points of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson functional. We derive an effective theory that takes into account small fluctuations around all of these saddle points. The resulting free energy functional contains a new term in addition to those obtained within the conventional …

Doppler Shift Anisotropy In Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski, Janice L. Cheung, Reinhard Strey, John G. Barker Oct 1999

Doppler Shift Anisotropy In Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski, Janice L. Cheung, Reinhard Strey, John G. Barker

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The two-dimensional patterns in our small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments from rapidly moving aerosols are anisotropic. To test the kinematic theory of two-body scattering that describes the anisotropy, we conducted SANS experiments using a constant source of D2O aerosol with droplets moving at ~440 m/s, and varied the neutron velocity from 267 to 800 m/s. The theoretically predicted anisotropy of the laboratory scattering intensities agrees well with the experimental results. Based on an analysis of the scattering intensity in the Guinier region, we also determined the particle velocity. The results are in very good agreement with independent …

Do You Think You're What They Say You Are? Reflections On Jesus Christ Superstar, Mark Goodacre Oct 1999

Do You Think You're What They Say You Are? Reflections On Jesus Christ Superstar, Mark Goodacre

Journal of Religion & Film

Jesus Christ Superstar (dir. Norman Jewison, 1973) is a hybrid which, though influenced by Jesus films, also transcends them. Its rock opera format and its focus on Holy Week make it congenial to the adaptation of the Gospels and its characterization of a plausible, non-stereotypical Jesus capable of change sets it apart from the traditional films and aligns it with The Last Temptation of Christ and Jesus of Montreal. It uses its depiction of Jesus as a means not of reverence but of interrogation, asking him questions by placing him in a context full of overtones of the culture …

Spirits In A Material World: Intelligent Agents As Intermediaries In Electronic Commerce, Ian R. Kerr Oct 1999

Spirits In A Material World: Intelligent Agents As Intermediaries In Electronic Commerce, Ian R. Kerr

Dalhousie Law Journal

The article provides an in-depth analysis of the contract issues peculiar to automated electronic commerce. The aim of the study is to provide a critical evaluation of the various solutions that might be adopted by a legislature seeking to cure formal defects in agreements that are negotiated and entered into by software programs, independent of human review. The author begins with an examination of the current state of the technology that automates electronic commerce, offering some speculation as to its future development. He then outlines the barriers to automated electronic commerce inherent in traditional contract doctrine. He argues against the …

All That Becomes A Man, Eugene M. Mcavoy Oct 1999

All That Becomes A Man, Eugene M. Mcavoy

English Theses & Dissertations

In each life, the past inevitably impinges upon the present, at once helping to form and threatening to destroy the fragile structure of the psyche called identity. With a multitude of influences, the past functions to alter ephemeral perceptions of the self and to shape an identity that is often incompatible with and abhorrent to who we think we are. This collection of five short stories examines the processes of reconciling the past with the present and of discovering the resulting social, sexual and spiritual identities.

Yet, more importantly, the stories also explore people in their present moments, aching to …

Senate Trials And Factional Disputes: Impeachment As A Madisonian Device, Jonathan Turley Oct 1999

Senate Trials And Factional Disputes: Impeachment As A Madisonian Device, Jonathan Turley

Duke Law Journal

In this Article, Professor Turley addresses the use of impeachment, specifically the Senate trial, as a method of resolving factional disputes about an impeached official's legitimacy to remain in office. While the Madisonian democracy was designed to regulate factional pressures, academics and legislators often discuss impeachments as relatively static events focused solely on removal. Alternatively, impeachment is sometimes viewed as an extreme countermajoritarian measure used to "reverse" or "nullify" the popular election of a President. This Article advances a more dynamic view of the Senate trial as a Madisonian device to resolve factional disputes. This Article first discusses the history …

Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a framework for understanding the integration of marketing with business processes and shareholder value. The framework redefines marketing phenomena as embedded in three core business processes that generate value for customers-product development management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management-which in turn creates shareholder value. Such a conceptualization of marketing has the potential to introduce dramatic shifts in the scope, content, and influence of marketing in the organization. The authors highlight the implications of an organizationally embedded view of marketing for the future of marketing theory and practice.

Land Grant University Information Delivery Through Automated Telephone Message Services In The United States, Debby Newman Oct 1999

Land Grant University Information Delivery Through Automated Telephone Message Services In The United States, Debby Newman

Journal of Extension

At least 15 states have offered information delivery through prerecorded telephone messages to answer repetitive questions. The public's response in different states varies from less than 100 to over 50,000 inquiries per year. Factors that determine usage include marketing, population, and availability of current scripts. States have shared scripts and a few have combined audio services with adjoining states. In response to the United State's 11% Hispanic Latino population, some are translating scripts into Spanish. To contain costs, a network could be formed. This group could share subject matter, communication needs of emerging populations, and marketing and product ideas.

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen Oct 1999

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen

Institute for the Humanities Theses

There is good reason to believe that sacred experience is available to all humans. Yet the question of the sacred is frequently reduced to a debate between believers of various religions. As the focus of contention narrows, the ubiquity of sacred experience is neglected. Keeping this in mind, this analysis of the sacred confines itself strictly to the phenomenon of the sacred as a human experience, without confirming or denying the existence of a god or the veracity of any system of belief. Heidegger's Phenomenology is a useful model for such an analysis precisely because it lays aside conjecture about …

Assessing Medical Students' Competence In Obtaining Informed Consent""", Laura Weiss Roberts, Jan Mines, Carolyn Voss, Cheri Koinis, Steve Mitchell, Scott Obenshain, Teresita Mccarty

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Medical schools increasingly place emphasis on preparing students to perform routine, ethically important clinical activities with sensitivity and acumen. A method for evaluating students skills in obtaining informed consent that was created at our institution is described. METHODS: Formal assessment of medical students' professional attitudes, values, and ethics skills occurs in the context of three required and developmentally attuned comprehensive examinations. A videotaped station tested senior medical students' ability to obtain informed consent from a standardized patient who expresses concern about undergoing cardiac catheterization. Two checklists were completed by the patient. Videotapes were reviewed by a faculty member, and …

Sanctioning A Tyranny: The Diminishment Of Ex Parte Young, Expansion Of Hans Immunity, And Denial Of Indian Rights In Coeur D'Alene Tribe, John P. Lavelle

Faculty Scholarship

This Article analyzes a recent decision of the Supreme Court that illustrates the enormous destructive power of the Rehnquist Court's peculiar brand of anti-tribal activism, Idaho v. Coeur d'Alene Tribe. Coeur d'Alene Tribe is likely to heighten the urgency with which Eleventh Amendment scholars have called for an overruling of Hans to ameliorate the damage that Hans and its progeny already have done to the regime of federally protected rights under the Constitution, laws and treaties of the United States-a regime at the core of the Framers' vision of paramount federal law and essential to securing true liberty for all …

Analytic Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Peter Dorato, Domenico Famularo Oct 1999

Analytic Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Peter Dorato, Domenico Famularo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Doyle et al. (1992) presented an algorithm for analytic phase margin control design. Without special care, however, the compensator computed with this algorithm may not be a real rational function, The problem is evident when the plant has real unstable poles. In this case the algorithm requires a mapping of real points into complex values, and it is not clear that the resulting compensator has real coefficients. The purpose of this paper is to show how a complex mapping required in this algorithm can always be selected so that the compensator does have real coefficients.

Subseabed Disposal Of Nuclear Waste: An International Policy Perspective, Cristopher Meisenkothen Oct 1999

Subseabed Disposal Of Nuclear Waste: An International Policy Perspective, Cristopher Meisenkothen

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Humans have attempted throughout recorded history to create enduring achievements and lasting symbols of our ingenuity, our pride and our dreams. The ancient Egyptian pharaohs constructed massive tombs of stone as testaments to their self-styled grandeur. The Romans built cities of marble and granite and forever etched into the stone's surface images of times we can only imagine. Europeans in the Middle Ages erected immense castles as fortresses and homes that still stand today as reminders of a time long past. Artisans during the Renaissance and savants during the Scientific Revolution made contributions to their respective fields that have spanned …

The Cross-Border Insolvency Concordat And Customary International Law: Is It Ripe Yet?, David H. Culmer Oct 1999

The Cross-Border Insolvency Concordat And Customary International Law: Is It Ripe Yet?, David H. Culmer

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The importance of flexibility in international insolvencies is clearly demonstrated by the United States Bankruptcy Code. Section 304, governing cases ancillary to a foreign proceeding, provides that the court may, among specific forms of relief available to a foreign representative, "order other appropriate relief.' 2 This provision has been interpreted quite liberally, affording bankruptcy courts freedom to "broadly mold appropriate relief in near blank check fashion."3 While flexibility may not demand fair, predictable, and efficient results, it should at least allow for such results. Though probably true for most insolvency proceedings, either in reorganization or liquidation, this is perhaps nowhere …

The Inevitable Corruption Of Transition, Kim Lane Scheppele Oct 1999

The Inevitable Corruption Of Transition, Kim Lane Scheppele

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The difficulties of developing transparent democratic institutions and efficient free markets in Eastern Europe2 show how common ideas can turn into a diversity of practices. It is not enough for everyone to understand the ideas in order for complex institutions to be reproduced. One also needs a certain amount of social and normative infrastructure to sustain an idea in practice as it moves from one context to another.

In particular, the idea of and practices surrounding corruption generate a great deal of cross-cultural confusion. As the Cold War has further cooled, Western advisors and investors going into the former Soviet …

Corruption And Donor Reforms: Expanding The Promises And Possibilities Of The Rule Of Law As An Anti-Corruption Strategy In Kenya, James Thuo Gathii Oct 1999

Corruption And Donor Reforms: Expanding The Promises And Possibilities Of The Rule Of Law As An Anti-Corruption Strategy In Kenya, James Thuo Gathii

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In this paper, I explore various anti-corruption initiatives that form part of the rule of law reforms donors have required the Kenyan government to implement. Rule of law reforms primarily aim at instituting fair or impersonal procedures that limit open ended official discretion. The goal of these rule of law reforms is in part to put in place effective mechanisms to hold public officials accountable for abuse of office. My argument is that although rule of law reforms are significant for reducing opportunities for abuse of public office, these do not necessarily guarantee or entail fair or substantive outcomes. This …
