Three Worlds Collide: A Novel Approach To The Law, Literature, And Psychology Of Shame, Deni Smith Garcia Oct 1999

Three Worlds Collide: A Novel Approach To The Law, Literature, And Psychology Of Shame, Deni Smith Garcia

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment illuminates the shaming issue from a "law in literature"" 7 standpoint since, through literature, contextualization and empathy can be best understood. "Literature is instructive to lawyers and scholars because it leads away from a view of law as formal, mechanized rule-making, and leads instead toward all the possibilities, probabilities, ambiguities and doubts that life possesses." More specifically, through analyzing the conditions that existed in Hawthorne's Salem at the close of the Seventeenth century, and contrasting them with conditions in America at the beginning of the Twenty-first century, this Comment exposes the flaws inherent in a modern scarlet letter …

Development and positive action born of grief and loss are themes throughout this study of the historical cultural and spiritual significance of Adinkra symbolism and art. I've taken an inter-disciplinary approach to the subject. This work involves creative writing, textile art and historical and cultural studies. In this work, Adinkra's association with funerals and mourning is emphasized in order to provide a medium and conceptual framework for processing and representing aspects of the legacy of suffering and resistance created by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The art of Adinkra provides fertile ground for this exploration of the links between image and …

The Virtual Real, Kurt Schnarr Oct 1999

The Virtual Real, Kurt Schnarr

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Digital technologies have led to the transformation of different types of information into binary form. This transformation changes the way one perceives materiality, space, and its relationship to information. On one level. cyberspace creates a condition in which communication, travel, and education occur at a fast and efficient rate. On another level, cyberspace allows one to exist within a different condition, another world created by simulation and virtual reality. However, one cannot engage these virtual worlds without the existence of physical space. Aside from being an essential element for human existence, physical space evokes human contact, which must occur to …

Advertising / Gender Studies, Delia Nevola

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The architectural blurring of genered space. IMages are presented to society as the representation of men/women, and what it means to be one versus the other. This imagery takes form in the products that are produced and dvertised. Architecture will therefore take on the role of (re)presentation, meaning the presentation of products and the representation of genes, through the investigation of binary opposites. These binary opposites, those that are assumed by society, become the architectural elements to demonstrate the presumed differences between genders. The intervention which establishes a blue between these binaries advocates a degenderization of architecture."

“Thus Far The Words Of Jeremiah” But Who Gets The Last Word?, Steve Delamarter Oct 1999

“Thus Far The Words Of Jeremiah” But Who Gets The Last Word?, Steve Delamarter

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

I'll never forget the first time a movie star talked to me. At the end of his television show, Roy Rogers looked right into the camera and sang to me, "Happy trails to you, until we meet again." A similar thing happened to my children when Mister Rogers smiled into the camera and reassured them, "I like you just the way you are."

These moments stand out in our memory because it is so odd-even jarring when an actor or a storyteller steps outside the world of the story, as it were, and enters our own. Sometimes it becomes clear …

Significant Source For Accounting Historical Research: The Catasto Of 1427 In Florence, Richard G.J. Vangermeersch Oct 1999

Significant Source For Accounting Historical Research: The Catasto Of 1427 In Florence, Richard G.J. Vangermeersch

Accounting Historians Notebook

Ferdinand Scehevill's 1938 book, History of Florence: From the Founding of the City through the Renaissance, mentioned that the Catasto of 1427 was a relatively equitable income tax, based on an anticipated earning rate of 5 percent on equity (pp.345-346). The tax failed by 1434 because of dishonest administration (p. 364). What accounting historians should note was that the base of the 1427 Catasto, the same base of Pacioli in 1494, is that of a list of all assets and liabilities (pp.345-346). There is a copy of the 1427 law in the 1765-66 book Delia Decima e di Varie Altre …
