Swapping Terminal Letters, Rex Gooch Nov 1999

Swapping Terminal Letters, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

Richard Lederer in the Nov 1997 Word Ways mentioned words which become other words when their terminal letters are interchanged (the first and the last letter are swapped), as SWINDLES to SWINDLED. He gave seven examples of four-letter pairs, five examples of the "rarer" five-letter pairs, and three examples of six-letter "prize" pairs, given them the title "simultaneous loopers" since the two letters are looped to the other end of the word at the same time.

All That She Had On Was The Radio, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

In De Logologische Ruimte (Meulenhoff, 1984), Rudy Kousbroek honored the French Oulipan Gorges Perec with many wordplay variants of Marilyn Monroe's famous remark about the calendar picture of her in the nude: "All I had on was the radio." The following is a translation of his article (with interpretation for non-Dutch readers).

Word Trees In Running Text, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

In "Mysterious Precognitions" in the August 1998 Word Ways, Martin Gardner showed how to generate the sequence of words in running text. Start with any word, and use the following (iterative) rule: if the ith word in the sequence has n(i) letters, then the (i+1)st word is located n(i) words further in the running text. For example, take the first sentence of this paragraph: pick IN as the first word, count two words to PRECOGNITIONS, count thirteen more words to A, count one more word to SEQUENCE, and so on.

Word Ways

In the first part of this article (May 1999), we presented words consisting solely of ascenders (bdfhiklt], descenders (gjpqy), body letters (acemnorsuvwxz), or ascenders or decenders. In this part, we consider words consisting of cyclic mixtures of the various types. For example, Darryl Francis gave SINCIZING and LUTEINIZING as alternating body

Words Of A Feather, William Young Nov 1999

Words Of A Feather, William Young

Word Ways

Have you ever encountered a white-whiskered hermit or a festive coquette? How about a rifleman or a firewood-gatherer? Have you seen a village weaver or a bearded mountaineer? What about a red-tailed comet or a shining sunbeam? If you answered in the affirmative to any of these questions, you are probably a birdwatcher, because these are all names of birds from around the world. The common names of birds reflect a use of language almost as colorful as their plumages.

Swiss Settlers Of The Carolina Back Country: Saxe Gotha, Switzers' Neck, The Dutch Fork, And Lexington, Claudette Holliday

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The Township Act and Saxe Gotha The year was 1716 and a lone outpost, the Congaree garrison, located about five miles below the mouth of the Saluda River and below the Congaree Creek on the western bank of the Congaree River offered little protection for low country settlements from Indians resisting the take-over of their homelands. By 1722 the garrison was abandoned.

An Investigation Of Price Discovery In Informationally-Linked Markets: Equity Trading In Malaysia And Singapore, David K. Ding, Frederick H. Harris, Sie Ting Lau, Thomas H. Mclnish

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using transactions data for the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) for a major Malaysian conglomerate, Sime Darby Berhad, and intraday exchange rate data, we investigate whether and to what extent each exchange contributes to price discovery. Results indicate that the price series are cointegrated. The raw data appear to indicate the presence of arbitrage opportunities, but none exist after taking exchange rate changes into account. Using the common long-memory factors of Gonzalo and Granger (1995, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 13, 1-9), we show that while the majority of the price discovery (approximately …

Expatriation In The United States: Precept And Practice Today And Yesterday, Alan G. James

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Mr. James traces the historical roots of expatriation to its current application in present-day law, regulations and procedures. Using as a reference point both the expatriation of the American novelist Henry James and the United States Supreme Court's 1990 decision in Vance v. Terrazas, the author highlights the major facets of expatriation. Specifically, the author focuses on processing and documentation of loss of nationality cases, development of the role of the Department of State in expatriation, the constituent elements of a determination of loss of nationality, and administrative and judicial review of holdings of loss of citizenship …

MPEG-4, under the auspices of the ISO, is specifying tools to enable object-based audio-visual presentations [3]. These include tools to encode individual objects, compose presentations with objects, store these object-based presentations and access these presentations in a distributed manner over networks. The main distinguishing feature of object-based audio-visual presentations is the scene composition at the user terminal. The objects that are part of a scene are composed and displayed at the user end as opposed to encoding the composed scenes as is done in the case of MPEG-2. Such object-based representation and presentation has several benefits including compression efficiency and …
