When professors get together outside the university they talk about that thing which dominates them, their work. This conversation may take the form of discussing a product of that work-a lecture in class, a research paper, committee deliberations-but most often it seems to be about conditions of work. One hears talk about course load, the trials of tenure and promotion, salaries and compensation, and of course the quality of the students on which some of academic labor is supposed to fall. In themselves, these conversations are not surprising. Mail carriers have very similar conversations, as do primary school teachers, subway …

Long Memory And Asia Crisis: Implication For Capital Controls And Management, Kuo Chuen David Lee

“Financial markets are given to excesses and if a boom/bust sequence progresses beyond a certain point, it will never revert to where it came from. Instead of acting like a pendulum, financial markets have recently acted more like a wrecking ball, knocking over one economy after another.” - A testimony before the US House Banking Committee, Sep, 1998. There are three parts to this paper. The first part examines the time series behaviour of the equity indices of ten countries. Using Robinson (1995a)’s modified GPH estimator and Robinson (1994a)’s average periodogram estimator for the differencing parameter, we have detected that …
Local Coherence And Its Limits: A Second Look At Second Sentences, Desmond Allison, Susheela Varghese, Siew Mei Wu
Local Coherence And Its Limits: A Second Look At Second Sentences, Desmond Allison, Susheela Varghese, Siew Mei Wu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our article takes up Joy Reid's (1996) proposal that second sentences deserve a second look in academic writing research and pedagogy. Reid's data and commentaries indicate that second sentences, the sentences following topic sentences, make important but generally underrated contributions to the (in)coherence of students' written paragraphs. Her study, in a U.S. university, found that English as a second language (ESL) student writers often developed paragraphs that did not meet the expectations of experienced native English speaker (NES) readers. We offer a contextualized critique and partial replication of Reid's exploratory study. Our research, in Singapore, investigates second sentence writing by …

The Changing Face Of Policing: Local Issues In National Perspective, Philip Kessell Bunt
The Changing Face Of Policing: Local Issues In National Perspective, Philip Kessell Bunt
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
The thesis reviews the changes which have taken place in policing England and Wales between 1950 and 1998 with particular reference to foui* key themes: community policmg, crime preverition, victims of crime and quality ofservice. It contributes to ah understanding of how policing has developed during a period of significant social change and explores the rationale which has underpinned legislative development and policy making at national and force levels whilst identifying the significance of these changes within a local city environment. The development of the key themes at national level is considered within the local policing environment of the south-west …
Cross Sectional Variation Of The Effect Of Bond Rating Changes On Stock Prices, Jeremy C. Goh, Louis H. Ederington
Cross Sectional Variation Of The Effect Of Bond Rating Changes On Stock Prices, Jeremy C. Goh, Louis H. Ederington
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Previous research has found that the stock market reacts negatively to bond rating downgrades and that downgrades tend to follow periods of negative returns, indicating that at least some downgrades are partially predictable. Hypothesizing that the reaction to a downgrade depends on both the implications for cash flows and the degree of surprise, we explore how the reaction to downgrade announcements varies across bond issues. We find that the equity market reacts much more negatively to bond rating downgrades to and within the speculative bond category than to downgrades within the investment grade category. Within the speculative category, the reaction …

Selecting The Most Qualified Teacher Applicant Utilizing West Virginia Code Section 18a-4-7a., Paul E. Barcus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of county school superintendents, county personnel directors, principals, and teachers in West Virginia who had been involved in the teacher selection process concerning the effectiveness of West Virginia State Code §18A-4-7a. More specifically, this study examined the perceived effectiveness of the second set of criteria found therein in leading to the employment of the most qualified applicant for a classroom teaching position in the public schools of West Virginia. A descriptive research design through a questionnaire was used which involved the analysis of the responses by the participants in the …
Labor For Bread: The Exploitation Of Polish Labor In The Soviet Union During World War Ii., Jean C. Bingle
Labor For Bread: The Exploitation Of Polish Labor In The Soviet Union During World War Ii., Jean C. Bingle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the summer of 1939, the Soviet Union signed a nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany, which not only reassured Stalin of Russia's security, but also sealed the fate of hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting inhabitants of Poland's eastern provinces who were subsequently deported to the Soviet interior between 1939 and 1941. Beginning with community leaders and their families, the arrests and deportations ultimately permeated the entire social hierarchy. The exact number of those deported will never be known, but the Polish survivors from the depths of the GULag do provide valuable information about the conditions under which they lived and …
Where Do Resources Come From? A Model Of Resource Generation, Paul C. Godfrey, Hal B. Gregersen
Where Do Resources Come From? A Model Of Resource Generation, Paul C. Godfrey, Hal B. Gregersen
Faculty Publications
Although the Resource-Based View of the firm (RBV) continues to gain centrality in the conversation of strategic management, several unanswered questions remain within the emerging paradigm. This article focuses on one of those questions. We propose a causal model of resource generation built around three central constructs: entrepreneurial ability, market context, and organizational context. Entrepreneurial ability generates new asset combinations that are valuable and unique, while market and organizational contexts preserve the value in these new asset combinations by providing barriers to imitation. We build a model and then consider three separate paths for generating idiosyncratic resources within a firm. …
Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey
Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey
Faculty Publications
The private sector of United States society (private corporations) currently enjoys the moral authority to set the national agenda. Business schools, because they train future managers, can play a vital role in helping the private sector sustain that moral authority. Specifically, I argue that service-learning pedagogies offer management educators a way to incorporate citizenship skills and moral training into the traditional management curriculum. This article describes the concept of service-learning, reviews the current state of service-learning in management, and argues that service-learning can enhance both the technical capability and moral capability of students. Key issues for faculty members involved in …

A review essay of six recent books represents an occasion to examine the very idea of accountability, and to examine what the effects of several decades of emphasis on evaluation have been.
How To Brief A Case, Christopher Pyle, Lloyd Sealy Library, Katherine Killoran
How To Brief A Case, Christopher Pyle, Lloyd Sealy Library, Katherine Killoran
Open Educational Resources
This is a guide for students on how to brief a case. A student brief is a short summary and analysis of the case prepared for use in classroom discussion. It is a set of notes, presented in a systematic way, in order to sort out the parties, identify the issues, ascertain what was decided, and analyze the reasoning behind decisions made by the courts.
Created by Christopher Pyle, 1982
Revised by Prof. Katherine Killoran, Feb. 1999.
Toni Morrison: Rethinking The Past In A Postcolonial Context, Hanan Abdullatif
Toni Morrison: Rethinking The Past In A Postcolonial Context, Hanan Abdullatif
Open Access Dissertations
Recovering submerged histories is instrumental in counteracting colonial cultural hegemony and its persistent attempts to erase the past that subject peoples had prior to the epoch of colonial rule. In Toni Morrison's novels reclaiming the past is a necessary condition of subjectivity since it restores a voice and history to those who were deprived of the awareness of both. In other words, it is a restoration of subjectivity. In a postcolonial context, reclaiming the past means more than a linear or literal recording of historical facts. Rather the process of redeeming a past requires that victims of oppression recover their …
Crossing The Threshold: Examining The Abatement Of Public Nuisances Within The Home, Mary B. Spector
Crossing The Threshold: Examining The Abatement Of Public Nuisances Within The Home, Mary B. Spector
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
The Article suggests an approach courts should use when considering whether to abate a public nuisance within a home that is consistent with the goals and purposes of traditional public nuisance law as well as modern approaches to the regulation of individual rights and property. Part I provides the background for the analysis as it examines the common law origins of public nuisance law and the expansion of the equitable remedy of abatement. It also contrasts the law of public nuisance with the law of civil forfeiture. Although the law of civil forfeiture also permits uncompensated seizure of property connected …

When I was a kid, people blamed the misunderstandings and tensions between grown-ups and teenagers on the "generation gap." Adolescents and adults butted heads because they were born in different times, into different circumstances. As a teenager with limited experience and understanding, I accepted that explanation as the reason why I didn't think or act the way my parents and teachers did.
