Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 1999

Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

The limits of the normative nature of law may be illustrated in the current English Canadian context by apparently contradictory phenomena: Legal defeats of welfare mothers (e.g. Masse and Falkiner), and the legal victories of lesbian mothers (Re K). Drawing upon Fine, this paper employs the analytic frame of form and content to analyse contradictions within the legal form, notably in respect of the definition of spouse and the regulation of relations of property and poverty, and the struggles of lesbian parents who have applied to the courts to formalize their relationships to their children by way of adoption, and …

Calculation Of The Electron Self-Energy For Low Nuclear Charge, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Gerhard Soff Jan 1999

Calculation Of The Electron Self-Energy For Low Nuclear Charge, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Gerhard Soff

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a nonperturbative numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron self-energy for hydrogenlike ions with low nuclear charge numbers Z = 1 to 5. Our calculation for the 1S state has a numerical uncertainty of 0.8 Hz for hydrogen and 13 Hz for singly ionized helium. Resummation and convergence acceleration techniques that reduce the computer time by about 3 orders of magnitude were employed in the calculation. The numerical results are compared to results based on known terms in the expansion of the self-energy in powers of Zα.

Modification Of No, Po, And No/Po During Flow Across The Bering And Chukchi Shelves: Implications For Use As Arctic Water Mass Tracers, Lee W. Cooper, Glenn F. Cota, Lawrence R. Pomeroy, Jacqueline M. Grebmeier, Terry E. Whitledge Jan 1999

Modification Of No, Po, And No/Po During Flow Across The Bering And Chukchi Shelves: Implications For Use As Arctic Water Mass Tracers, Lee W. Cooper, Glenn F. Cota, Lawrence R. Pomeroy, Jacqueline M. Grebmeier, Terry E. Whitledge

CCPO Publications

The NO and PO tracers (9[NO3-] + 02 and 135[PO4-] + 02, respectively,) and their derivative NO/PO have found increasing use in Arctic water mass analyses for identifying the specific basin or shelf areas from which surface waters originate, based upon assumed differences in Pacific- and Atlantic-derived content and basin-to-basin differences within the Arctic. Following shipboard sampling in June-September 1993 and May-June 1994, both north and south of Bering Strait, we have found evidence that Pacific-derived waters flowing north to Bering Strait do not necessarily have any unique NO, PO, or NO/PO identity that would permit …

Challenges For Science And Mathematics Faculty, S. T. Thornton

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The increased science and mathematics teacher licensure requirements for K-8 teachers are clearly necessary to prepare teachers to appropriately teach the new Virginia SOLs [1]; The expectations of a program equivalent to 12 hours of science and 12 hours of mathematics for the PreK-6 endorsement and the 21 hours each of math and science to teach middle school math and science must be chosen very carefully indeed if future teachers are to be prepared to teach the specific SOL content, as well as "practical applications and the use of appropriate technology“. Most Virginia colleges and universities are not currently offering …

A Field Based Approach To Introductory Geology Instruction, G. R. Woodwell, J. L. Hayob Jan 1999

A Field Based Approach To Introductory Geology Instruction, G. R. Woodwell, J. L. Hayob

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As part of the NSF-funded VCEPT project, geology faculty at Mary Washington College have developed and pilot tested a two-semester sequence of geology courses which are taught in a non-traditional, discovery oriented style. The guiding philosophy of the course development is to ensure that students learn about geological principles through collaborative learning in a variety of field settings that were carefully chosen to provide good examples of a range of geologic processes and environments. The design goals of these courses include improvement in student retention of concepts, increased student interest in earth science, improved critical thinking skills and the promotion …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …

Measuring The Costs Of Quality, Susan L. Machnik Jan 1999

Measuring The Costs Of Quality, Susan L. Machnik

Honors Capstones

Familiarity with quality loss reduction models and methods should be a priority for many U.S. manufacturers because costs of quality represent a significant percentage of total sales each year. This thesis provides an overview of quality costs, models, and control techniques based on selected readings. Costs of quality include failure, appraisal, and prevention costs. Focused attention should be given to prevention expenditures as a means to reduce quality failure and appraisal losses. However, U.S. manufacturers have only recently started to recognize this strategy. One model available to assist companies in establishing quality loss goals and strategic planning is Joseph Juran's …

Lessons From Community-Based Distribution Of Family Planning In Africa, James F. Phillips, Wendy L. Greene, Elizabeth F. Jackson Jan 1999

Lessons From Community-Based Distribution Of Family Planning In Africa, James F. Phillips, Wendy L. Greene, Elizabeth F. Jackson

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper reviews findings and experiences from efforts to implement community-based family planning services in sub-Saharan Africa. Although research suggests that community-based service delivery can contribute to contraceptive use, the magnitude of impact is often in doubt or is considerably less than was observed in similar projects in Asia in the 1970s and 1980s. Reasons for the constrained impact of community-based family planning in Africa are reviewed and assumptions about the efficacy and mechanism of community-based distribution (CBD) are discussed. Whereas several contrasting approaches to CBD have been tried, little is known about the relative merits of alternative CBD approaches.

The Quantity-Quality Transition In Asia, Mark R. Montgomery, Mary Arends-Kuenning, Cem Mete Jan 1999

The Quantity-Quality Transition In Asia, Mark R. Montgomery, Mary Arends-Kuenning, Cem Mete

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Societies in which fertility is falling and human capital investment per child increasing are experiencing a “quantity-quality transition.” Such transitions imply, over the long term, both slower rates of labor force growth and higher levels of human capital per worker. They are fundamental to economic development. Yet, these transitions are neither automatic or self-propelling. Their momentum depends on competing forces acting at both the family and the macroeconomic levels; the balance can easily tip against further transition. Family decisions about schooling are largely motivated by its private economic returns. These returns are determined in labor markets, and here the logic …

The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines: A Surprising Success?, James Gibson Jan 1999

The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines: A Surprising Success?, James Gibson

Law Faculty Publications

The author discusses whether the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines represent an advance in our nation's approach to criminal law or a step backward-a "dismal failure," as Judge Cabranes so bluntly asserted a few years ago. The authors goal is to convince you that the guidelines are in fact a surprising success, indeed that they represent a step forward in federal criminal justice.

Cannibal Democracies, Theocratic Secularism: The Turkish Version, Edip Yuksel Jan 1999

Cannibal Democracies, Theocratic Secularism: The Turkish Version, Edip Yuksel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Symposium: Cannibal Democracies: Human Rights and Democracy in Turkey

The article critically examines Turkey's democratic framework, arguing that its version of democracy diverges significantly from Western models due to its unique interpretation of secularism and the disproportionate influence of the military and political elite. The analysis highlights how the Turkish Constitutional Court's frequent banning of political parties, particularly the Welfare Party in 1998, undermines democratic processes and often leads to authoritarian governance. The article contends that Turkey's Constitution, drafted under military supervision, lacks political legitimacy and contains provisions that restrict individual and group rights, perpetuating a system of oligarchy and …

Service Learning In Communication: Why?, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1999

Service Learning In Communication: Why?, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

At a 1993 convention session honoring his work, Howard Giles recounted his attempts to introduce his students in a more practical way to accommodation theory He would send them out from campus to visit nursing homes, where they would interact with elderly residents, paying particular attention to their own and their interlocutors' speech patterns. Such cross-generational discourse opened their ears to the accommodation normal in everyday speech. Seen in this way, communication should strike most people as a natural academic area for service-learning.

Service-learning "a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community …

Regulation Of The International Transport Of Packaged Dangerous Goods: The Case For Legislative Integration In A World Convention, Mirsada Stasevic Jan 1999

Regulation Of The International Transport Of Packaged Dangerous Goods: The Case For Legislative Integration In A World Convention, Mirsada Stasevic

LLM Theses

The multimodal transport of dangerous goods is a high risk enterprise for the participants, the public, and public and private property. This study examines the lack of congruency of safety and environmental protection rules which govern the international transport of dangerous goods, along with the concurrent progressive efforts of the international community to ensure global and inter-modal harmonization of these rules. It discusses their inadequacy and proposes a solution. The analysis of the existing rules, fragmented along modal and geographical fines, shows that they do not sufficiently introduce the safety, environmental protection and liability considerations into the legal regime governing …

Prospectus Disclosure And The Role Of The Securities Commissions In Ontario And Bangladesh: A Comparative Study, Md. Anowar Zahid Jan 1999

Prospectus Disclosure And The Role Of The Securities Commissions In Ontario And Bangladesh: A Comparative Study, Md. Anowar Zahid

LLM Theses

The fundamental difference between Ontario law and Bangladesh law is that the former is based on the combination of the disclosure theory and the "blue sky" (merit review) theory while the latter is based on the disclosure theory alone. Accordingly, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) exercises twofold powers: it reviews the disclosures contained in a prospectus and also determines the merit of the offering. In other words, it ensures that "full, true and plain" disclosures are made in a prospectus, and at the same time it examines the offering to see whether any element jeopardizing the public interest is present …
