The Effect Of Usage On Degrees Of Constituency: The Reduction Of Don't In English, Joan Bybee, Joanne Scheibman Jan 1999

The Effect Of Usage On Degrees Of Constituency: The Reduction Of Don't In English, Joan Bybee, Joanne Scheibman

English Faculty Publications

In this paper we take the position that there are many degrees of constituency and that these derive in a direct manner from the frequency with which elements are used together: elements that are frequently found next to each other show a tighter constituent structure than those that collocate less frequently. We use both phonological and functional evidence from conversation to argue that repetition conditions chunking (Haiman 1994), sometimes overriding the syntactic and semantic logic of the organization of utterances. Our study examines the reduction of don't in American English conversation. We find that don't is reduced the most in …

Androgyny Or Catastrophe: Doris Lessing's Vision In The Early 1970s, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1999

Androgyny Or Catastrophe: Doris Lessing's Vision In The Early 1970s, Nancy Topping Bazin

English Faculty Publications

Doris Lessing's novels of the early 1970s offer readers a rare kind of wisdom one which has been nourished by Sufism, a form of Islamic mysticism, which she admires. Unlike Lessing's earlier fiction which was simply influenced by the ideas of Sufism, three of her novels-Briefing for a Descent into Hell (1971), The Summer Before the Dark (1973), and The Memoirs of a Survivor (1974)-are literally Sufi fables-that is, symbolic stories, each of which "illuminates truth" (qtd. in Shah, The Sufis 14). The Sufi truth illuminated by these novels is that "life is One," and that because we have …

Brain Sex: How The Media Report And Distort Brain Research, Janet M. Bing Jan 1999

Brain Sex: How The Media Report And Distort Brain Research, Janet M. Bing

English Faculty Publications

Testosterone gives men a particular advantage in that it is focusing and galvanizing a brain that is already, by its very structure, more focused than the female. Remember that the male brain is a tidier affair, each function in its special place . . . Biology, then, every bit as much as social conditioning, militates against a strongly feminine role in areas traditionally regarded as male preserves.

International Review Of Women And Leadership: Special Issue 1999, Jane Long (Ed.) Jan 1999

International Review Of Women And Leadership: Special Issue 1999, Jane Long (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The centenary of women's suffrage in Western Australia in 1899 has presented many moments to reflect upon and evaluate women's experiences, to recognise and respond to the diversity of women's lives and concerns. This special issue of the International Review of Women and Leadership is one contribution to a year's activities marking that centenary.

Millicent Poole's preface discusses the genesis of these papers in a successful series of seminars in 1998 hosted by the Centre for Research for Women which attested, each fortnight, to the energy, intellectual rigour and vibrancy of participants. Poole contextualises the seminar series by pointing out …

Does The Intermediate Booklet Category Test Discriminate Between Ld And Non-Ld Children?, Jo Anna Scheidler Jan 1999

Does The Intermediate Booklet Category Test Discriminate Between Ld And Non-Ld Children?, Jo Anna Scheidler

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Intermediate Booklet Category Test (IBCT) at identifying LD children between the ages of 9 and 14. Thirty children were involved in the study: 15 with a previous diagnosis of LD and 15 with no diagnosis. All subjects were expected to have an IQ no less than 80. The IBCT was administered to all thirty children and their error score calculated. The means of the scores of the diagnosed and control groups were found to be statistically significant at the .05 level. Also, statistical significance was found between IQ and IBCT scores. While neurological …

Some Realistic Thinking About Secular Effects, Paul E. Salamanca Jan 1999

Some Realistic Thinking About Secular Effects, Paul E. Salamanca

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Notwithstanding complaints about incoherence in Establishment Clause doctrine, courts by and large administer the Clause responsibly. They do so by mediating between a number of powerful considerations, none of which can ever be entirely disregarded. These considerations include, but are not limited to, separation of church and state, the value of religiosity, the imperative of affording equal treatment to religious and similarly situated nonreligious entities, and the proper role of courts in a democratic political system. This is not to say that courts cannot overstep their bounds and provoke an adverse reaction from other powerful elements within the polity. It …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Egypt holds a unique place among developing countries due to its longstanding commitment to gather information on the numbers and well-being of its population. But until now, there has never been a systematic effort to gather data on the group of young Egyptians poised between childhood and adulthood—its adolescents. Today, Egypt has the largest cohort of adolescents in its history, more than 13 million boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 according to its 1996 census. Their experiences during the transition to adulthood will profoundly affect how the nation makes its transition into the next century. This …

Unfulfilled Promises: Women's Rights In Egypt, Nemat Guenena, Nadia Wassef Jan 1999

Unfulfilled Promises: Women's Rights In Egypt, Nemat Guenena, Nadia Wassef

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Today, there is almost no field into which Egyptian women have not ventured, yet their status in society remains unequal to that of men. While many factors account for the prevailing gender gap, male-dominated institutions have continued to relegate women’s concerns to a low priority, impeding their progress. This monograph contends that recent public discourse in Egypt is dominated by the conservative polemics of the Islamists and that the state, in its attempt to contain the Islamists, has subordinated women’s issues to its own concerns for security and legitimacy. Renewed appeals urging women to retreat to the private sphere and …

The Professional And The Liar, Richard H. Underwood Jan 1999

The Professional And The Liar, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Many individuals in society think that all lawyers are liars. Some think lawyers are allowed to lie. Regrettably, some American lawyers apparently think so too. In the United States there has been, and continues to be, a troubling lack of professional consensus when it comes to litigating a case. Indeed, lawyers who are neither corrupt nor insensitive have been accused of arguing that the elicitation of false testimony, and the use of it, is a professional responsibility. Fairness also calls for some acknowledgment that even the most cunning, zealous, and successful of trial lawyers have agonized over such moral choices. …

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Investigations Of The Chemistries Of Soils, T. L. Barr, E. E. Hoppe, S. Hardcastle, S. Seal Jan 1999

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Investigations Of The Chemistries Of Soils, T. L. Barr, E. E. Hoppe, S. Hardcastle, S. Seal

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The present study continues our x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis investigations of silicate systems, particularly those in contact with biological materials. In the present case, the investigations are extended to a detailed analysis for a wide variety of soil samples extracted from different locations around the world. The samples were selected from relatively pristine sites, pressed into wafers, and were examined without further modification. All of the materials were insulators and therefore analysis required extensive use of the electron flood gun. Careful XPS chemical shift assignments have been achieved for many silicate minerals. These have …

Cryogenic Stabilization Of High Vapor Pressure Samples For Surface Analysis Under Ultrahigh Vacuum Conditions, J. J. Bruckner, K. Wozniak, S. Hardcastle, A. Sklyarov, S. Seal, T. L. Barr Jan 1999

Cryogenic Stabilization Of High Vapor Pressure Samples For Surface Analysis Under Ultrahigh Vacuum Conditions, J. J. Bruckner, K. Wozniak, S. Hardcastle, A. Sklyarov, S. Seal, T. L. Barr

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A novel form of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) cryogenic stabilization has been used to obtain high-resolution x-ray photoelectron - spectroscopy (XPS) data from a complex amine, 1,8-bis(dimethylamino) naphthalene, whose solid phase exhibited at room temperature an unacceptably high rate of sublimation. Protonated versions of the amine exhibit hydrogen bonding. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis chemical shifts can be used to describe the strength and asymmetry of hydrogen bonding formed in proton sponge complexes. Analyzing the binding energy shifts of N (1s) induced by the presence of this hydrogen bonding required obtaining corresponding XPS spectra from the nonprotonated (reference) sample, but the …

Inner-Shell Photoexcitation In An Open-Shell Atom: The Cl 2p -> Ns,Md Spectrum As A Case Study, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause, R. D. Cowman, A. Menzel, S. B. Whitfield, S. Hallman, S. P. Frigo, M. C. Severson Jan 1999

Inner-Shell Photoexcitation In An Open-Shell Atom: The Cl 2p -> Ns,Md Spectrum As A Case Study, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause, R. D. Cowman, A. Menzel, S. B. Whitfield, S. Hallman, S. P. Frigo, M. C. Severson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The 2p-- > ns,md excitation spectrum has been measured and calculated for the open-shell C1 atom. A satisfactory accord between experiment and theory was found. Rydberg series cannot be discerned for transitions leading to a 2p, 3p, n iota open-shell configuration. The 4s,3d manifolds are dominant, and the 2p-3p coupling is seen to be much stronger than the 3p-n iota coupling. Very narrow widths, 16 to 22 meV, for the 4s and 3d lines an observed. By contrast, only broad structures appear in the region of the highest excitations.

Transverse Strain Responses In Electrostrictive Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride-Trifluoroethylene) Films And Development Of A Dilatometer For The Measurement, Z. -Y. Cheng, Vivek Bharti, T. -B. Xu, Shexi Wang, Q. M. Zhang, T. Ramotowski, F. Tito, R. Ting Jan 1999

Transverse Strain Responses In Electrostrictive Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride-Trifluoroethylene) Films And Development Of A Dilatometer For The Measurement, Z. -Y. Cheng, Vivek Bharti, T. -B. Xu, Shexi Wang, Q. M. Zhang, T. Ramotowski, F. Tito, R. Ting

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A dilatometer based on the cantilever beam concept has been developed. The dilatometer is easy to use and capable of measuring transverse strain response of soft polymer films in a broad strain range (from 10(-7) to 10(-1)) without mechanical constraining of the sample. It is capable of detecting strain over a relatively wide frequency range from mHz to above 100 Hz under different load and temperature. Using the setup, the electric field induced transverse strains of the electrostrictive poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer films were characterized which shows that a large transverse strain can be achieved in this class of polymer. In …

Second-Harmonic Generation In Reactive-Ion Etched N ' Ethyl N-Ethanol-4-(Nitrophenylazo)Phenylamino Polymer Waveguides At Telecommunication Wavelengths, Wook-Rae Choo, Vincent Ricci, Tomáš Pliška, Michael Canva, George I. Stegeman Jan 1999

Second-Harmonic Generation In Reactive-Ion Etched N ' Ethyl N-Ethanol-4-(Nitrophenylazo)Phenylamino Polymer Waveguides At Telecommunication Wavelengths, Wook-Rae Choo, Vincent Ricci, Tomáš Pliška, Michael Canva, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Second-harmonic generation using modal dispersion phase matching has been demonstrated in reactive-ion etched waveguides based on the organic nonlinear polymer poly (methyl methacrylate)-Disperse Red 1 [N' ethyl N-ethanol-4-(nitrophenylazo)phenylamino]. The measured propagation losses were 6 dB/cm at the fundamental and 10 dB/cm at the second-harmonic wavelength, dramatically less than we obtained previously for the harmonic in photobleached waveguides. A figure of merit of eta=0.1%/W for second-harmonic generation was obtained with a modest nonlinearity of 3 pm/V at 1607 nm in a 2 mm long waveguide.

Intensity Dependent Transmission Dynamics In Magnetic Fluids, Tengda Du, Weili Luo Jan 1999

Intensity Dependent Transmission Dynamics In Magnetic Fluids, Tengda Du, Weili Luo

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The time dependent transmission is observed when a laser beam passes through a thin layer of a magnetic fluid. We found that the transmission reaches a peak at a time that depends on the intensity of the incident beam-the peak position shifts to shorter time when the input intensity is increased. The peak value of transmitted power decreases with increasing magnetic field. A simplified model is provided to explain these complex dynamics.

Diode-Pumped Self-Frequency Doubling In A Nd3+: Yca4o(Bo3)(3) Laser, J. M. Eichenholz, D. A. Hammons, L. Shah, Q. Ye, R. E. Peale, M. Richardson, B. H. T. Chai Jan 1999

Diode-Pumped Self-Frequency Doubling In A Nd3+: Yca4o(Bo3)(3) Laser, J. M. Eichenholz, D. A. Hammons, L. Shah, Q. Ye, R. E. Peale, M. Richardson, B. H. T. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We report efficient, diode-pumped, self-frequency doubling (SFD) in the newly developed laser crystal Nd3+:YCa4O(BO3)(3). More than 350 mW of fundamental output power at 1060 nm was achieved with a slope efficiency of 51%. With one watt of absorbed pump power, 62 mW of green cw laser emission at 530 nm was observed with proper phase matching. This initial performance, and the good optical properties of the crystalline host, are encouraging for the development of a high power diode-pumped SFD visible light laser source.

Effects Of Laser Mode And Scanning Direction On Melt Pool Shape, K. Farooq, A. Kar Jan 1999

Effects Of Laser Mode And Scanning Direction On Melt Pool Shape, K. Farooq, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A three-dimensional quasi-steady-state mathematical model is presented for laser heating with a multimode beam. The effects of laser beam scanning direction on the melt pool shape are investigated through the conduction analysis without phase change. The maximum temperature is found to be behind the center of the focal spot due to advection. The isotherms ahead of the focal spot bunch together and spread apart behind the focal spot on the surface of the workpiece due to the same effect. The temperature profile shows four distinct peaks as a result of four intensity peaks. Scanning direction affects the melt pool shape …

Local And External Factors Affecting The Photodegradation Of 4n,N '-Dimethylamino-4 ' Nitrostilbene Polymer Films, Adriana Galvan-Gonzalez, Michael Canva, George I. Stegeman Jan 1999

Local And External Factors Affecting The Photodegradation Of 4n,N '-Dimethylamino-4 ' Nitrostilbene Polymer Films, Adriana Galvan-Gonzalez, Michael Canva, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The photodegradation of the electro-optic chromophore 4N,N'-dimethylamino-4'nitrostilbene was investigated as a function of wavelength, temperature, local atmosphere, and local molecular environment, i.e., attached as a side chain to a polymer or dissolved as a guest in a host polymer.
