Orwell Versus Huxley: Economics, Technology, Privacy, And Satire, Richard A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and Huxley's novel Brave New World have often been thought prophetic commentaries on economic, political, and social matters. I argue, with particular reference to the supposed applicability of these novels to issues of technology and privacy, that the novels are best understood as literary works of art, rather than as social science or commentary, and that when so viewed Orwell's novel in particular reflects a dissatisfaction with everyday life and a nostalgia for Romantic values.

Development and positive action born of grief and loss are themes throughout this study of the historical cultural and spiritual significance of Adinkra symbolism and art. I've taken an inter-disciplinary approach to the subject. This work involves creative writing, textile art and historical and cultural studies. In this work, Adinkra's association with funerals and mourning is emphasized in order to provide a medium and conceptual framework for processing and representing aspects of the legacy of suffering and resistance created by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The art of Adinkra provides fertile ground for this exploration of the links between image and …
Dance And Drum Education In Afiadenyigba, Ghana, Kathryn D. Bryant
Dance And Drum Education In Afiadenyigba, Ghana, Kathryn D. Bryant
African Diaspora ISPs
The purpose of this project is t study the status of dancing and drumming education in an Anlo-Ewe rural community. The research conducted includes both traditional and formal methods of educatin in these areas. There is a wealth of dancing and drumming in a Ghanaian community and this project attempts to uncover how that resource is cultivated. As a supplement to this study, I learned drums rythms and dances of this area. This study is not meant to judge the quality of education, but rather to learn more about the Ghanaian people and society through drumming and dancing.

The Measurement Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Class In The Lsay Project Technical Paper No. 14, Gary N. Marks
The Measurement Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Class In The Lsay Project Technical Paper No. 14, Gary N. Marks
LSAY Technical Reports
There is little doubt that soocioeconomic background is an important concept among social researchers and policy developers. First and foremost, the relationships between socioeconomic status with educational and labour market outcomes is an important indicator of the degree of social equity and the success of policies aimed at reducing social inequality. Although there is almost universal agreement on the importance of socioeconomic status there is little agreement on its conceptualisation and measurement. There are a variety of issues relating to socioeconomic status which have produced considerable debate. These include the explicit or implicit theoretical approach, whether continuous or categorical measures …

Enhanced Biotransformation Of Carbon Tetrachloride By Acetobacterium Woodii Upon Addition Of Hydroxocobalamin And Fructose, Syed A. Hashsham, David L. Freedman
Publications
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydroxocobalamin (OH-Cbl) on transformation of high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Acetobacterium woodii (ATCC 29683). Complete transfor-mation of 470 M (72 mg/liter [aqueous]) CT was achieved by A. woodii within 2.5 days, when 10 M OH-Cbl was added along with 25.2 mM fructose. This was approximately 30 times faster than A. woodii cultures (live or autoclaved) and medium that did not receive OH-Cbl and 5 times faster than those controls that did receive OH-Cbl, but either live A. woodii or fructose was missing. CT transformation in treatments with …

Pfiesteria Piscicida And Dinoflagellates Similar To Pfiesteria, Harold G. Marshall
Pfiesteria Piscicida And Dinoflagellates Similar To Pfiesteria, Harold G. Marshall
Virginia Journal of Science
Pfiesteria pisiccida is a microscopic, unicellular organism that is classified as both a mixotrophic and heterotrophic dinoflagellate, which has been associated with both fish deaths and a cause of human illness (Burkholder et al., 1992; Glasgow et al., 1995; Burkholder and Glasgow, 1997). This species possesses a complex life cycle that includes motile forms (e.g. zoospores, gametes, amoebae) and a cyst stage that may remain dormant in the sediment (Burkholder et al., 1995b). Pfiesteria piscicida is known to have toxin and non-toxin producing populations, where cyst transformation into the toxic motile zoospores may be initiated by the presence of certain …
