Experiments To Assess The Cost-Benefits Of Test-Suite Reduction, Gregg Rothermel, Mary Jean Harrold, Jeffery Von Ronne, Christie Hang, Jeffery Ostrin Dec 1999

Experiments To Assess The Cost-Benefits Of Test-Suite Reduction, Gregg Rothermel, Mary Jean Harrold, Jeffery Von Ronne, Christie Hang, Jeffery Ostrin

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Test-suite reduction techniques attempt to reduce the cost of saving and reusing test cases during software maintenance by eliminating redundant test cases from test suites. A potential drawback of these techniques is that in reducing a test suite they might reduce the ability of that test suite to reveal faults in the software. Previous studies suggested that test-suite reduction techniques can reduce test suite size without significantly reducing the fault-detection capabilities of test suites. To further investigate this issue we performed experiments in which we examined the costs and benefits of reducing test suites of various sizes for several programs …

Reader Response: Students Develop Text Understanding, Ruth R. Becker Dec 1999

Reader Response: Students Develop Text Understanding, Ruth R. Becker

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Prompted by Rosenblatt's (1978) framework of the reader's transactional relationship to the text, this qualitative study examines four fifth-grade students' stances and their responses to a narrative text in three classroom activities, a peer-led discussion group, a story map activity, and written responses. This study primarily investigates issues regarding the accessibility of shifts in stance for the students. Additionally, it calls into question Rosenblatt's construct of the aesthetic-efferent continuum.

Black-Tailed Deer Habitat Changes In A Portion Of The Mount St. Helens Blast Zone, Ronald W. Davis

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized Landsat TM imagery to evaluate black-tailed deer habitat changes in a portion of the Mount Saint Helens blast zone in western Washington. The purpose of this study was to compare the post eruption vegetation changes with population trends for black tailed deer. The 55,000-acre study area comprises a Washington Department of Game Management unit (GMU 524) located to the northnorthwest of Mount St. Helens. Approximately 80% ofthe mostly forested study area was affected by lateral blast from the 1980 eruption. The area is predominantly private land managed for timber production but a small portion falls within the …

The Role Of Suspicion In Federal Equal Protection, Paul E. Mcgreal Dec 1999

The Role Of Suspicion In Federal Equal Protection, Paul E. Mcgreal

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Recently, Professor Jed Rubenfeld wrote an essay arguing that the Supreme Court's strict scrutiny test for equal protection works best to "smoke out" the purpose of laws to determine whether they were enacted because of racial bias or preference. Professor Rubenfeld criticized the Court's most recent affirmative action decision in Adarand Constructors, Inc. v. Pena for departing from this "smoking out" approach.

In this Essay, Professor McGreal explores how this "smoking out" process is applied in federal equal protection cases. Counter to Professor Rubenfeld's view, he argues that the Supreme Court did use a "smoking out" approach in Adarand. His …

Empowerment Through Organisation: Ela Bhatt As Told To Rajesh Agrawal, Rajesh Agrawal

IIMB Management Review

Ela Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women's Association, an organisation set up in 1972 to help homebased producers to organise for their welfare and selfrespect, talks to Rajesh Agrawal about her mission to bring visibility and self reliance to women workers and the unorganised sector. A staunch Gandhian, Ela Bhatt believes, and has demonstrated, that the key to the empowerment of the poor lies in organisation and in providing access to resources.

Quantifying A Key Injection Molding Attribute Defect, Kristopher Bryan Horton Dec 1999

Quantifying A Key Injection Molding Attribute Defect, Kristopher Bryan Horton

Masters Theses

A mounting demand for high quality, low cost plastic injection molded products brings with it goals such as low or even zero defects. In order to achieve these types of "world class" expectations, resources are used to monitor and control variable data such as cycle time, part weight or dimensions. Despite this emphasis on variable data, parts are often rejected based on attribute molding defects such as sink marks or splay that are measured by subjective criteria and therefore difficult to control. Appearance of a part once considered acceptable may no longer be, due to changing expectations or subjective interpretation …

Melting Multiculturalism? Legacies Of Assimilation Pressures In Human Service Organizations, Darlene L. Piña, Laura Canty-Swapp Dec 1999

Melting Multiculturalism? Legacies Of Assimilation Pressures In Human Service Organizations, Darlene L. Piña, Laura Canty-Swapp

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines non-profit human service agency workers' discussions of their work with diverse clients. These conversations are understood within the competing social agendas of multiculturalism and assimilation, and they suggest how service providers may resist or perpetuate the social control of people of color. Findings revealed that people of color were often excluded from providers' notions of American identity. It was common for providers, both whites and people of color, to both wittingly and unwittingly describe pressures to assimilate their clients. Providers disagreed on the merits and consequences of these assimilation pressures, with some seeing harm done to themselves …
