The Last Days Of The Credit Card, Ronald J. Mann

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Once fed by burgeoning information technology, the credit-card industry is likely to succumb to further advances within the next few decades unless it adapts to the dynamics of economic activity in the 21st century.

This essay is based on remarks delivered at the fall of 1998 meeting of the Law School Community of Visitors. Much of the information in this essay is discussed in greater detain in Payment Systems and Other Financial Transactions (Aspen, 1999), and in "Searching for Negotiability in Payment and Credit Systems," 44 UCLA Law Review 951 (1997), both by the same author.

Metadata In A Digital Special Library: The Energy And Environmental Information Resources Center In Lafayette, Louisiana, Dan Foley

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

This paper discusses three kinds of metadata and how they are used in the Energy & Environmental Information Resources Center (EE-IR Center), a digital special library of text, numeric, and geospatial data, located in Lafayette, Louisiana. These metadata are Dublin Core (DC), MARC21 (formerly USMARC), and Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata.

The EE-IR Center was formed as a partnership between the National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Center for Advanced Computer Studies of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (CACS/USL). Both partners are located in Lafayette, Louisiana. The EE-IR Center is funded by a …

A Model Job Training Program For Summer Youth: Library Interns At Grambling State University A. C. Lewis Memorial Library, Grambling, Louisiana, Sally Carroll, Sandy Stokley

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

A six-week university library intern program sponsored by the Job Training Partnership Act investigated the impact on 12 economically disadvantaged young persons facing nationally recognized problems pertaining to inadequate reading and math skills, work ethics, job skills, and motivation to complete school. Participants, predominantly (92%) African-American high school students, worked at Grambling State University, an historically black university, under predominantly (85%) African-American supervisors. Interns received academic enrichment, work experience, and life skills, primarily through pre-testing, classroom training, orientations by departmental supervisor, "hands-on" group projects, written assignments, daily reviews, and post-testing. Statistical data verify recommendations in the literature that job training …

Review Of Under The Blade: The Conversion Of Agricultural Landscapes Edited By Richard K. Olson And Thomas A. Lyson, Gordon Scholz Oct 1999

Review Of Under The Blade: The Conversion Of Agricultural Landscapes Edited By Richard K. Olson And Thomas A. Lyson, Gordon Scholz

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Loss of agricultural land to other land uses is an issue of growing concern in the United States. A number of studies in recent years have drawn attention to the extent of agricultural land loss and have stimulated considerable discussion about the impacts of changing land use patterns. The 1992 National Resources Inventory by the US Department of Agriculture indicated that conversion of agricultural and forest lands to non-agricultural uses is occurring at an average rate of at least 1.4 million acres per year.

Because conversion of farmland to other uses is practically irreversible, even over a fairly long timespan, …

Response Of Riparian Vegetation To Streamflow Regulation And Land Use In The Great Plains, W. Carter Johnson Oct 1999

Response Of Riparian Vegetation To Streamflow Regulation And Land Use In The Great Plains, W. Carter Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The influence of human activities on riparian zone vegetation differs markedly by ecoregion and stream size. Large rivers, dams and water diversions affect ecological processes more than local land uses do. However, for small streams, the reverse is generally true. Examples demonstrating these relationships include studies completed on the Missouri River in North Dakota, the Platte River in Nebraska, and Foster Creek in western South Dakota. On the Missouri River, damming has stopped river meandering and the regeneration of riparian forests in gaps between reservoirs. In contrast, on the Platte River, diversion of a large portion of the flow for …

Greater Prairie-Chicken Harvest In Kansas: Early Vs. Regular Seasons, Francis E. Durbian, Iii, Elmer J. Finck, Roger D. Applegate Oct 1999

Greater Prairie-Chicken Harvest In Kansas: Early Vs. Regular Seasons, Francis E. Durbian, Iii, Elmer J. Finck, Roger D. Applegate

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Populations of the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) in Kansas are managed to maintain population size while providing recreational hunting potential. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the effect of adding an early hunting season (late September-October) to the regular season (November-late January). We compared the hunting methods used and the harvest of greater prairie-chickens during early and regular hunting seasons for 1990-91 and 1991-92. The use of dogs and walkup hunting techniques were emphasized in early season, whereas pass shooting in feeding fields was emphasized in the regular season. During early season, the reported …

Review Of Herbarium Of The Lewis & Clark Expedition. Vol. 12, The Journals Of The Lewis & Clark Expedition Edited By Gary E. Moulton, Stanley L. Welsh Oct 1999

Review Of Herbarium Of The Lewis & Clark Expedition. Vol. 12, The Journals Of The Lewis & Clark Expedition Edited By Gary E. Moulton, Stanley L. Welsh

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume continues the series edited by Gary E. Moulton and is certainly its capstone publication, including as it does a portion of the scientific results of that amazing expedition. The strengths of the volume are great indeed. Foremost is the presentation of a photographic representation of the extant herbarium collected on the Expedition. Moreover, the careful review of the historical meanderings of the herbarium specimens from their gathering to their present sites provides real insight into botanical history. That any of the specimens survived to contemporary times is a wonder, demonstrating again the fragmentary nature of early collections upon …

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova Oct 1999

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The transition of air/ground communications, from its present analog structure to a new digital communications architecture, will span a 10-year time frame. Testing to date indicates that the potential for interference from the digital system to the analog system would be critical, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. The subsequent degrading effects on voice radio communications could jeopardize flight safety. The masking of parts of important information would result in distracted attention, debilitated cognitive performance, high level of …

An Intermittent-Combustion General Aviation Aircraft Engine Exhaust Noise Prediction Algorithm, Hiroko Tada Oct 1999

An Intermittent-Combustion General Aviation Aircraft Engine Exhaust Noise Prediction Algorithm, Hiroko Tada

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

From an environmental point of view, the reduction of aircraft noise has become an important factor recently. There are two factors that make airplane noise: propeller noise and engine noise. This report puts emphasis on only the engine noise in order to begin understanding what airplane engine exhaust noise is. At first, the engine exhaust noise is comprehended using the Dobrzynski's engine noise theory. Next, a discussion about an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) engine system, engine exhaust system configurations, and microphone setting standards that show the ERAU engine system exhaust noise data. Finally, an Intermittent-Combustion (IC) General Aviation (GA) aircraft …

Florida Professional Responsibility In 1999: The Rules Of The Game, Timothy P. Chinaris, Elizabeth Clark Tarbert

Law Faculty Scholarship

The year 1999 saw a number of changes and developments in Florida professional responsibility law. This article surveys these developments by reviewing: 1) relevant reported cases; 2) ethics opinions; 3) rules changes; and 4) disciplinary actions affecting lawyers and the practice of law in the Sunshine State. These authorities are examined in the context of the various relationships upon which a lawyer's professional life is built and within which the lawyer typically operates.

Validation Of Coral Temperature Calibrations, Thomas J. Crowley, Terrence M. Quinn, William T. Hyde Oct 1999

Validation Of Coral Temperature Calibrations, Thomas J. Crowley, Terrence M. Quinn, William T. Hyde

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Geochemical analyses of coral skeletons are increasingly used to estimate past sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In this paper we suggest that the standard method of calibrating geochemical time series against a (usually short) local time series requires modification. In order to draw large‐scale inferences about climate from coral proxy data it is also necessary to (1) calibrate against larger fields such as the local gridded data sets and (2) validate results against an independent data set (e.g., early 20th century). This approach has been applied in a pilot study to a coral record from New Caledonia. Despite a high δ18O …

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston Oct 1999

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston

Comparative Civilizations Review

Integration is simultaneously an epistemology, psychology, sociology of change and theory of history. It is the theoretical foundation of Sorokin’s general sociology and later works on the crisis of modernity, altruism and social reconstruction. This paper delineates the evolution of the concept from Social and cultural Dynamics to Sorokin’s work at the Harvard Research Center in Creative Altruism. What results from this chain of historical analysis is an integrated conceptual approach to the nature of humanness, knowledge, conflict resolution, and prosocial forms of human organization. As a result, integralism broadens sociological discourse and yields new insights into social problems and …

When Balance And Fairness Collide: An Argument For Execution Impact Evidence In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan Oct 1999

When Balance And Fairness Collide: An Argument For Execution Impact Evidence In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

A central precept of death penalty jurisprudence is that only the "death worthy" should be condemned, based on a "reasoned moral response" by the sentencing authority. Over the past decade, however, the Supreme Court has distanced itself from its painstaking efforts in the 1970s to calibrate death decision making in the name of fairness. Compelling proof of this shift is manifest in the Court's decisions to permit victim impact evidence in capital trials, and to allow jurors to be instructed that sympathy for capital defendants is not to influence capital decisions. This Article examines a novel strategy now being employed …

A Comparison Of Student Achievement, Self-Esteem, And Classroom Interactions In Technology -Enriched And Traditional Elementary Classrooms With Low Socioeconomic Students, Michael Shawn Page Oct 1999

A Comparison Of Student Achievement, Self-Esteem, And Classroom Interactions In Technology -Enriched And Traditional Elementary Classrooms With Low Socioeconomic Students, Michael Shawn Page

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the attainments of elementary students in technology-enriched classrooms and students in traditional classrooms, while considering performance levels in student achievement, self-esteem, and classroom interactions. Student achievement was measured by the reading and mathematics sections of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the California Achievement Test (CAT). Composite self-esteem, as well as subscale self-esteem levels, was measured by the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventories (CSEI), and classroom interaction analysis measurements were conducted using an adaptation of Flanders Interaction Analysis System.

Intact classes from 5 Louisiana elementary schools were randomly assigned to either …

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu Oct 1999

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

An ad hoc micro-polar fluid model is developed to investigate the influence of micro effects, such as micro-gyration, in micro-scale flows. The foundation of the ad hoc …

Toward Designing The Optimal Total Cavopulmonary Connection: An In Vitro Study, Ann E. Ensley, Patricia Lynch, George P. Chatzimavroudis, Carol Lucas, Shiva Sharma, Ajit P. Yoganathan Oct 1999

Toward Designing The Optimal Total Cavopulmonary Connection: An In Vitro Study, Ann E. Ensley, Patricia Lynch, George P. Chatzimavroudis, Carol Lucas, Shiva Sharma, Ajit P. Yoganathan

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background. Understanding the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) hemodynamics may lead to improved surgical procedures which result in a more efficient modified circulation. Reduced energy loss will translate to less work for the single ventricle and although univentricular physiology is complex, this improvement could contribute to improved postoperative outcomes. Therefore to conserve energy, one surgical goal is optimization of the TCPC geometry. In line with this goal, this study investigated whether addition of caval curvature or flaring at the connection conserves energy.

Methods. TCPC models were made varying the curvature of the caval inlet or by flaring the anastomosis. …
