An Introduction To The Paris Forum On Transnational Practice For The Legal Profession, Laurel Terry Oct 1999

An Introduction To The Paris Forum On Transnational Practice For The Legal Profession, Laurel Terry

Faculty Scholarly Works

This article focuses on the 1998 Paris Forum on Transnational Practice for the Legal Profession and introduces the papers contained in the Paris Forum Symposium. The Paris Forum was the first meeting of lawyers from around the world devoted solely to the topic of transnational legal practice. Before the Paris Forum, some bar organizations had set aside time during their meetings to discuss the transnational practice of law and issues related to transnational legal services also had been included as topics in general conferences. The multi-day Paris Forum, however, was the first multi-day conference devoted to this topic. This paper …

What You Should Know About Landmine Victims, Margaret S. Busé Oct 1999

What You Should Know About Landmine Victims, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

One million people have been killed and maimed by anti-personnel mines. Twenty-six thousand people a year become victims, 70 people a day, or around one person every 15 minutes. Three hundred thousand children and counting are severely disabled because of landmines. Half the people who step on an anti-personnel mine die from their injuries before they are found or taken to hospital. An even higher percentage of children die because, being smaller, their vital organs are closer to the blast. After the end of hostilities, decades afterwards, anyone who strays into a mine field is at risk. Everyone is vulnerable: …

Analytic Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Peter Dorato, Domenico Famularo Oct 1999

Analytic Phase Margin Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Peter Dorato, Domenico Famularo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Doyle et al. (1992) presented an algorithm for analytic phase margin control design. Without special care, however, the compensator computed with this algorithm may not be a real rational function, The problem is evident when the plant has real unstable poles. In this case the algorithm requires a mapping of real points into complex values, and it is not clear that the resulting compensator has real coefficients. The purpose of this paper is to show how a complex mapping required in this algorithm can always be selected so that the compensator does have real coefficients.

Enhanced Biotransformation Of Carbon Tetrachloride By Acetobacterium Woodii Upon Addition Of Hydroxocobalamin And Fructose, Syed A. Hashsham, David L. Freedman Oct 1999

Enhanced Biotransformation Of Carbon Tetrachloride By Acetobacterium Woodii Upon Addition Of Hydroxocobalamin And Fructose, Syed A. Hashsham, David L. Freedman

Publications

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydroxocobalamin (OH-Cbl) on transformation of high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Acetobacterium woodii (ATCC 29683). Complete transfor-mation of 470 􀀀M (72 mg/liter [aqueous]) CT was achieved by A. woodii within 2.5 days, when 10 􀀀M OH-Cbl was added along with 25.2 mM fructose. This was approximately 30 times faster than A. woodii cultures (live or autoclaved) and medium that did not receive OH-Cbl and 5 times faster than those controls that did receive OH-Cbl, but either live A. woodii or fructose was missing. CT transformation in treatments with …

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Bad Human Factor Designs, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Ergonomics or human factors does not only encompass product design, but safety, and product use. A simple definition is “to make the work place safe and less stressful on the worker.” Human factors or ergonomics impacts all aspects of our lives. Let's consider each of the following examples of bad human factor designs.

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Interpretation Of Visual Displays, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. The area of human factors or ergonomics focuses on human beings and their interaction with products, equipment, facilities, producers, and environments used in work and everyday life. The emphasis is on human beings and how the design of things influences people. One small area of ergonomics is concerned with how humans interpret visual displays. For an introduction to this area, let's consider the visual interpretation of static displays (i.e., information that …

Strategic Teaching And Strategic Learning In First Grade Classrooms, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch, Dodie Magill, Marie Dean

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this article the authors describe Reading Express, a collaborative program which brings together the expertise of first-grade teachers and Reading Recovery teachers to support all first-grade children in literacy development. In the Reading Express program, the Reading Recovery teachers spend one hour per day in each of the first grade classrooms. This time is spent in both whole class as well as small group instruction. The results of Reading Express have been positive for both first-grade children as well as teachers. End-of-year text-level scores and other data indicate that the program is having a positive impact on students' literacy …

Applications Of Cloze Procedure To Reading Assessment In Special Circumstances Of Literacy Development, Norbert Francis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study forms part of an on-going investigation of second language reading development of elementary school children from a bilingual, indigenous, community where high levels of proficiency in both languages are common among all age groups. Modifications were applied to the standard rational deletion cloze procedure to adapt assessment to the special sociolinguistic circumstances of reading in an indigenous language, and for the purpose of exploring practical classroom applications of the cloze procedure for instruction.

Critical Teacher Thinking And Imaginations: Uncovering Two Vocabulary Strategies To Increase Comprehension, Elaine Roberts Oct 1999

Critical Teacher Thinking And Imaginations: Uncovering Two Vocabulary Strategies To Increase Comprehension, Elaine Roberts

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Dedicated teachers who were taking a university course for reading assessment and diagnosis candidly discussed students' problems with vocabulary words that impede successful reading comprehension. Their viewpoints about ways to help students learn to use vocabulary strategies effectively led to the development of two vocabulary strategies that were based on cognitive and personality styles. The interactive process of developing the strategies pushed the teachers' imaginations and created a challenge for the teachers and their college professor.

Introduction, B. Zorina Khan Oct 1999

Introduction, B. Zorina Khan

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

The significant breakthrough in plant biotechnology is the development of techniques to transform genes from unrelated sources into commercially important crop plants to develop resistance against insect pests. A local cotton cultivar MNH-93 was transformed through Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58C(1) assisted by bombardment with tungsten particles. The Agrobacterium strain contained the recombinant binary vector pKMAB harboring crylAb under 35S promoter. Neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII) gene was used as a selectable marker at a concentration of 50 mg L-1. The transformation efficiency remained 0.26%. The primary transformants were analyzed for transgene integration and expression through PCR and Southern Blotting and Western dot …

From Interval Methods Of Representing Uncertainty To A General Description Of Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Harry Schulte, Matthew R. Barry, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Measurements do not result in an exact value of the measured quantity; even after the most accurate measurement, there is still some uncertainty about the actual value of the measured quantity. Traditionally, in science and engineering, this uncertainty is characterized by a probability distribution; however, often, we do not know this probability distribution exactly. So, to get a more adequate description of this uncertainty, we must consider classes of possible probability distributions. A natural question is: Are all possible classes needed for this description? In this paper, we show that even for simple situations, we indeed need arbitrary closed convex …
