Conversations With The Dead: The Ontological Substructure Of Wallace Stevens' "Esthetique Du Mal", Darren Joseph Danylyshen Jan 1999

Conversations With The Dead: The Ontological Substructure Of Wallace Stevens' "Esthetique Du Mal", Darren Joseph Danylyshen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In "Esthetique du Mal," one of his later poems, Wallace Stevens considers existence from a variety of critical and philosophical perspectives, among them various moral, aesthetic, political, theological, and philosophic "epistemes" that condition how humanity perceives and experiences the world. These epistemological "modes" dictate how we live and perceive the world about us, providing preconceptions that shroud understanding and obfuscate ontological explanation. What Stevens accomplishes in "Esthetique du Mal" is to create a dialogue with various historical and philosophical "schools," systematically confronting and rejecting their perspectives, and creating a movement toward Martin Heidegger's "aletheia" to uncover the ontological substructure that …

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang Jan 1999

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Communication is a key element of all business activities during any crisis situation. A company without a crisis management plan can suffer serious difficulties during and after a crisis. A good crisis communication plan cannot solve a crisis, but it can reduce the damage including helping to maintain a positive corporate identity and keeping the normal operation of a company. Four themes (caring, responsibility, honesty, and quick response) relative to crisis communication were examined in the 1987 and 1982 coverage of the Honda Water-Logged Car Crisis and the Tylenol Capsule Poisonings respectively. An investigation of these themes suggests how the …

Classification And Evaluation Of Coastal Water Resources, Albert Naya Jan 1999

Classification And Evaluation Of Coastal Water Resources, Albert Naya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Water Resources (WR) agencies have recently shifted to holistic management approaches that combine the use of watersheds and ecoregions as complimentary tools. However, the classification of data is based on land used and land cover detection. In contrast, this research is concerned with inferring WR quality from the landscape using satellite imagery and aerial photography combined with collateral data. To conduct the study, three major procedures were devised: (1) construction of a classification system for regional coastal WR, (2) delineation of WR units based on the interpretation of water quality parameters (e.g. land use/cover, soil, vegetation, etc.), and (3) development …

Cryptanalysis Of Small Private Key Rsa, Jeffrey Kirk Guild Jan 1999

Cryptanalysis Of Small Private Key Rsa, Jeffrey Kirk Guild

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

RSA cryptosystems with decryption exponent d less than N 0.292, for a given RSA modulus N, show themselves to be vulnerable to an attack which utilizes modular polynomials and the LLL Basis Reduction Algorithm. This result, presented by Dan Boneh and Glenn Durfee in 1999, is an improvement on the bound of N0.25 established by Wiener in 1990. This thesis examines in detail the LLL Basis Reduction Algorithm and the attack on RSA as presented by Boneh and Durfee.

Critical Investigation Of Sqlj, Anjali P. Borkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

We critically investigate, evaluate, and illustrate the language of SQL and Java provided by SQLJ. We investigate the main constructs of SQLJ, such as use of declarative and executable statements, SQLJ clauses, and use of bind variables in SQLJ applications. We also observe usage of named and position iterators and we illustrate how to develop and run applications on the server side. In particular, we analyze the difference between SQLJ and JDBC and we find that SQLJ is good for static SQL whereas JDBC is good for dynamic SQL. We also compare the relationship of SQLJ to ANSI/ISO embedded SQL. …

Data Protection And Management Solutions To Desktop Clients: Integration With Enterprise Tools, Venkatachalam S. Jayavarapu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Today's Personal Computers (PC) do more work and hence hold more important and meaningful data than before. This demands the necessity of better PC data protection services. In this concern we surveyed three major PC data protection tools, namely, Seagate Corporation's Client-Exec, Computer Associates Cheyenne Backup, Xpoint Technologies Uptime and analyzed them in terms of Restore Time and Total Cost of Ownership. Though these standalone tools are good in terms of PC data protection, IT managers still prefer Enterprise tools because they offer better services in terms of usability, manageability and platform independency. Combining the two tools will benefit each …

Detection Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Signals In A Multipath Fading Environment, Claude. Jodoin Jan 1999

Detection Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Signals In A Multipath Fading Environment, Claude. Jodoin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In this thesis, we study the effect of Rice fading on the performance of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The field-theoretic foundation of pseudo-random-noise (PRN) codes, their implementation, and their use in generating unique navigation messages in the GPS receiver is reviewed. The processing of the spread-spectrum signals within the digital delay locked loop (DDLL) in the receiver is also considered. In particular, we derive numerical expressions that can be easily evaluated for the probability error and the mean-time to lose-lock, for a DDL operating in an additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel in the presence of Rice fading. The …

Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Codes Using The Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm, Robert C. Dewsnap Jan 1999

Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Codes Using The Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm, Robert C. Dewsnap

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

There are various algorithms used for the iterative decoding of two-dimensional systematic convolutional codes in applications such as spread-spectrum communications and CDMA detection. The main objective of these decoding schemes is to approach the Shannon limit in signal-to-noise ratio while keeping the system complexity and processing delay to a minimum. One such scheme proposed recently is termed Turbo (de)coding. Through the use of Log-likelihood algebra, it is shown that a decoder can be developed which accepts soft inputs as a priori information and delivers soft outputs consisting of channel information, a priori information and extrinsic information to subsequent stages of …

Development Of Internet-Based Data Management And Retrieval Schemes For Auv Applications, Gildas Yann Bayard Jan 1999

Development Of Internet-Based Data Management And Retrieval Schemes For Auv Applications, Gildas Yann Bayard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The rapid increase in the amount of data gathered by Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) leads to a global data management issue. Indeed, this large data collection effort is only interesting if the data collected can be easily retrieved and analyzed by many researchers. The main contribution of this thesis is the design of data management and retrieval schemes useful to the whole AUV community that both simplify the access and treatment of the data collected. This is achieved by the use of a self-describing standard data format (Hierarchical Data Format) and the use of Internet browsers' file download ability. Recent …

Development Of Math Strategies In A Sociocultural Context, Martha J. Hubertz Jan 1999

Development Of Math Strategies In A Sociocultural Context, Martha J. Hubertz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Current studies are rapidly investigating strategy choice on tasks such as math and reading that children encounter in day to day life; it follows that strategy development should also be examined in the naturalistic settings where children actually perform these tasks. From a sociocultural learning perspective, we examined five year old children's arithmetic strategy use, in a game context, with the most likely of mentors for a young child, his or her parents. Children played three games of a modified version of "Chutes and Ladders" with one of their parents. Children's strategy use and parents' behavior were coded and analyzed. …

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine On Memory For Sex-Typed Event Sequences By Preschool Children, Niveen Iskandar Jan 1999

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine On Memory For Sex-Typed Event Sequences By Preschool Children, Niveen Iskandar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Cocaine use during pregnancy has been associated with neurobehavioral and cognitive difficulties in infants and toddlers. The present study used an elicited imitation procedure to investigate memory for sex-typed event sequences in preschool children. Measures of immediate and delayed recall was assessed in three groups of children: drug-exposed, at-risk, and not-at-risk. Results indicated that (1) drug-exposed males showed no evidence of demasculinization and/or feminization, (2) drug-exposed children, in general, did not recall a fewer number of different target acts or fewer actions in the correct order than the at-risk or not-at-risk children, and (3) drug-exposed and at-risk children exhibited a …

This thesis studies a new architecture Mobile People Architecture (MPA) proposed by MosquitoNet research group at Stanford University, which is designed to put people, rather than the devices that people use, at the endpoints of communication session. Three usage scenarios in MPA are simulated using SES/Workbench. The Response Time and the Update Cost are used to evaluate the performance of above scenarios. The advantages and disadvantages …

Examination Of Pricing Efficiency In The Offering Of Convertible Debt Securities, Don A. Taylor Jan 1999

Examination Of Pricing Efficiency In The Offering Of Convertible Debt Securities, Don A. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study evaluates the relative pricing efficiency of convertible debt offerings by comparing the wealth of the convertible bond at its termination with the termination date wealth of an equal initial investment in non-convertible debt of the same approximate risk and maturity. The comparison is made via the construct of a performance ratio. The attributes of the sample's aggregate ratio versus the expected value of the ratio, given that convertible bonds are priced efficiently, provides policy implications in the use of convertible bond financing. The thesis compares the results to prior research measuring convertible pricing efficiency and discusses the relative …

Empirical Investigation Of Uncovered Interest Parity Between The United States And Japan: Cointegration And Causality Tests, Russell Roy Enyart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study investigates the existence of Uncovered Interest Parity (UIP) between the United States and Japan. The study is conducted over a 58-month period beginning in January 1994 and continuing through October 1998. This study used unit root, cointegration, and causality tests to examine whether the exchange rates and interest rates of the two countries lent support to the UIP hypothesis. All data sets were found to contain a unit root. Further, there was no evidence for cointegration between the exchange rate and any of the explanatory variables (US interest rates, Japanese interest rates, and the interest rate differential). However, …

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle Jan 1999

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examined the relationship between ethnicity and parents' compliance with immunizations of their children. Recent studies have shown that compliance rates for immunizations of children who were two years of age were below the standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics due to both health system barriers and family/child barriers. A survey of pediatric patients was conducted utilizing a convenience sample of 66 parents of children between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight months. The subjects were interviewed to determine factors affecting immunization compliance, including cultural factors consistent with the theoretical framework of Madeline Leininger. The statistical analysis …

Shareholder Derivative Litigation And Corporate Governance, Mark J. Loewenstein Jan 1999

Shareholder Derivative Litigation And Corporate Governance, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

In approving settlements of derivative actions that include fees for plaintiff's attorney, courts typically announce that attorney's fees are approved if a substantial benefit is obtained. In fact, courts, particularly Delaware courts, approve settlements in shareholder derivative actions that included substantial fees for plaintiff's attorney, despite the absence of a corresponding benefit to the corporation. Frequently, the "benefit" obtained is a reform in corporate governance, which is of dubious value to the corporation. To deter frivolous litigation, courts should resist the temptation to approve these settlements just to dispose of the litigation. The paper concludes that fees should not be …

Exclusive production of ρ0 and J/ψ mesons in e+p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range 0.25 < Q2 < 50 GeV2, 20 < W < 167 GeV for the ρ0 data and 2 < Q2 < 40 GeV2, 50 < W < 150 GeV for the J/ψ data. Cross sections for exclusive ρ0 and J/ψ production have been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The spin-density matrix elements r0400, r11-1i and Re r510 have been determined for exclusive ρ0 production as well as r0400 and r041-1 for exclusive J/ψ production. The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft and hard phenomena.

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.

The DIS diffractive cross section, dσdiffγ*p→XN/dMx, has been measured in the mass range Mx < 15 GeV for γ*p c.m. energies 60 < W < 200 GeV and photon virtualities Q2 = 7 to 140 GeV2. For fixed Q2 and Mx, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with W, dσdiffγ*p→X N (Mx, W, Q2)/dMx ∝ Wadiff with adiff = 0.507 ± 0.034 (stat) +0.155-0.046 (syst) corresponding to a t-averaged pomeron trajectory of ̄αℙ = 1.127 ± 0.009 (stat) +0.039-0.012 (syst) which is larger than ̄αℙ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function FD(3)2 factorizes according to cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2(cursive greek chiℙ, β, Q2) = (cursive greek chi0//cursive greek chiℙ)nFD(2)2(β, Q2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2 with decreasing cursive greek chiℙ and the weak dependence of FD(2)2 on Q2 suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …
