Landscape And Habitat Predictors Of Canada Warbler (Wilsonia Canadensis) And Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus Noveboracensis) Occurrence In Rhode Island Swamps, Nicholas A. Miller Jan 1999

Landscape And Habitat Predictors Of Canada Warbler (Wilsonia Canadensis) And Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus Noveboracensis) Occurrence In Rhode Island Swamps, Nicholas A. Miller

Open Access Master's Theses

Canada Warblers (Wilsonia canadensis) and Norther Waterthrushes (Seiurus noveboracensis) – both fores-interior, neotropical migrants – are the only breeding bird species in Rhode Island restricted to forested wetlands. Despite continuing alterations of wetlands and surrounding upland landscapes, primarily as a result of urbanization, the factors affecting the distribution of these two species have not previously been investigated. The need for such research is urgent, especially given the long-term decline in Canada Warbler populations in the Northeast. I examined the relative influence of forest habitat characteristics and landscape context on the presence of both species in 80 …

Microlevel Climate Change Due To Changes In Surface Features In The Ganges Delta, M. M. Adel Jan 1999

Microlevel Climate Change Due To Changes In Surface Features In The Ganges Delta, M. M. Adel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Ganges had been the world's 8th largest river in terms of the volume of water discharge of 490 km3/yr to the ocean 4 prior to 1975. Since that time, over a period of two decades, India has reduced the Ganges discharge through Bangladesh to 40% from its original annual average discharge of 1,932+7-223 m3 /s by diverting water for irrigation in her upper states. The , resulting consequences have been disastrous due to the depletion of the surface water resources. One of the devastating consequences has been the generation of extreme climate. The summertime maximum temperature has risen to …

Mentor: Intelligent Tutoring Systems That Learn When To Help, R. David Sigsby Jan 1999

Mentor: Intelligent Tutoring Systems That Learn When To Help, R. David Sigsby

McNair Scholars Journal

Frustration is a problem common to all people learning a new technology, particularly computing technology. Intelligent Tutoring Systems (I.T.S.) can offer help based on a users goal or ability. What these systems fail to take into account is that help is useless if the user is not ready to accept it. This research has two main aspects: the content of help and the timing of that help. Thus the goal of this research is to develop a program, called Mentor, which first offers good helpful direction to the user and second, learns the appropriate time to intervene. Mentor is being …

Synthesis Of Two Novel Boronic Acid Probes For The Molecular Recognition Of Saccharides, Christopher W. Tudbman Jan 1999

Synthesis Of Two Novel Boronic Acid Probes For The Molecular Recognition Of Saccharides, Christopher W. Tudbman

McNair Scholars Journal

Normally the detection of biologically important molecules such as saccharides is difficult. Few chemical sensing mechanisms have been developed for saccharides as they are uncharged, neither fluoresce nor quench fluorescence, and are normally present in aqueous media, which presents competitive hydrogen bonding. The recognition and measurement of saccharides has been achieved recently by certain synthetic molecular receptors or "probes," containing a boronic acid receptor moiety, which circumnavigates the normal difficulties associated with the detection of saccharides. The synthesis of two novel bidentate boronic acid molecular probes was attempted with the intent of testing their relative binding selectivity in the molecular …

A Study Of Licensed Physical Therapists' Knowledge Regarding Current Legislative Issues, Jennifer Moine, Alexis Snyder, Susannah Steele Jan 1999

A Study Of Licensed Physical Therapists' Knowledge Regarding Current Legislative Issues, Jennifer Moine, Alexis Snyder, Susannah Steele

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of knowledge licensed physical therapists have regarding certain legislation at the state and federal levels. Potential relationships between degree of knowledge and therapist characteristics such as age, number of years in practice, and professional membership were also examined. A survey instrument was mailed to a random sample of licensed physical therapists in the state of Michigan.

Results indicated that licensed physical therapists who were members of a committee within the APTA, or held office in the organization had significantly more knowledge than physical therapists who did not (alpha=0.05). Being a …

Foster Care Placement : Age At Time Of Removal And Successful Functioning, Michelle L. Wetzel Jan 1999

Foster Care Placement : Age At Time Of Removal And Successful Functioning, Michelle L. Wetzel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Foster care placement is considered to be the primary placement option for children who are removed from their families for reasons of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect. Child care workers question the level of future success these children will acquire if they are not removed from their abusive environments as soon as possible. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the age at time of removal and success levels in the areas of education, substance abuse, and probation involvement during the adolescent years, ages 16- 18.

Subjects• functioning in these areas was assessed by …

Simulation Of The Formation And Propagation Of The Thermal Bar On Lake Ontario, Dilkushi Anuja De Alwis Jan 1999

Simulation Of The Formation And Propagation Of The Thermal Bar On Lake Ontario, Dilkushi Anuja De Alwis

Theses

Computer-based, mathematical models that simulate spatially distributed and time dependent environmental processes are increasingly recognized to provide diagnostic and productive outputs for the assessments of environmental factors. Mathematical models have been utilized since 60's to study the water quality, the circulation structure and the seasonal changes of large water bodies such as the Great Lakes. Analysis of changes in water quality related to seasonal cycles such as the formation and the propagation of the thermal bar requires spatial and temporal models, with high resolution. The overall objective of this study was to integrate geo-referenced site-specific spatial data to a 3D …

Simulation Of Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometers Using Dirsig, Francois Alain Jan 1999

Simulation Of Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometers Using Dirsig, Francois Alain

Theses

Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometers are becoming popular sensors for hyperspectral re mote sensing. To evaluate sensor design artifacts and properties, it is useful to simulate their designs using a radiometrically correct ray-tracing tool. The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation model allows for such design and simulation of sensor properties. Two different design types are evaluated and simulated. The first one is a Michelson-type interferometer. The sensor collects the image by operating in "stare mode" The interferogram is collected over time by scanning one of the mirrors to generate the required optical path difference between the signals. The second …

Do They Practice What We Teach?: A Survey Of Practitioners And Estate Planning Professors, Wayne M. Gazur

Publications

This article presents the results of a 1998 mail survey sent to members of the American Bar Association Real Property, Probate & Trust Law Section and to law professors teaching estate planning. The principal goal of the survey was to compare the opinions of practitioners and law professors concerning the importance of 31 estate planning issues and techniques. The survey also included an open-ended solicitation of issues deemed significant by the participant.

The survey found consistency between practitioner and professor responses with respect to techniques such as Crummey planning. Legal education appears to be effective in dealing with core principles. …
