Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings Jan 1999

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Approximate Agreement is an important issue in faulttolerant distributed computing where non-faulty processes exchange and vote upon their local values, to arrive at values which are within the range of the initial values of the nonfaulty processes and within a predefined tolerance of each other. Results to date in Approximate Agreement, however, are not capable of exploiting omission faults. Omission faults are presumed not to occur or a predefined default value is substituted for those values not received, or they are globally discarded before the voting algorithm executes. As a result, hybrid fault models can not differentiate between omissive and …

I Support National Service! A Guide To Promote Reauthorization Of The National And Community Service Trust Act, Youth Service America

Guides

The purpose of the national service reauthorization proposals is to extend longstanding national service legislation -- the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1990 and the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973. The extension authorizes support for programs that encourage Americans to engage in full- time or part-time service in their communities in order to meet unmet needs in the areas of education, public safety, the environment, and other human needs such as health and housing.

The Use Of Service Learning To Promote Understanding Of Gang-Related Issues Faced By Adolescents, Patrice Paul, Kathy Sexton-Radek, Janina Adickas, Bridget Fousek

School K-12

Service learning provides an opportunity for college students to experience classroom curriculum in a real-life setting. In addition, service learning provides the community with services otherwise not available. Such a program has been designed to assist with reduction of violence in the schools while simultaneously allowing college students to experience, hands-on, the people and issues they are studying. In this program, students in an adolescent development course were trained in a six-week group intervention aimed at building skills for positive communication, resolving differences, and preventing violence. A specific protocol involving skill-building exercises, role-plays, discussion. and at-home assignments was followed. Specific …

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers Jan 1999

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers

School K-12

When service learning is part of the curriculum, students become involved in something important and learn that they can make a difference in the world. Based on John Dewey’s (1938) theory of experiential learning, service learning takes the student out of the classroom and into the community. In a 1995 public address, Secretary of Education Richard Riley remarked that “by involving students in hands-on learning, problem solving, and applications of academic knowledge in real settings, service learning can increase students’ academic achievement in challenging subjects and creates a sense of engagement that enhances a student’s motivation to complete school.”

Education For Citizenship, Service Learning And Political Science, John Annette Jan 1999

Education For Citizenship, Service Learning And Political Science, John Annette

Civic Engagement

In the recent "Crick Committee" report on "Education for Citizenship and the Teaching of Democracy in Schools", citizenship and service learning has made a welcome reappearance on the educational agenda, and the consultation document on Millennium Volunteering, for young people between 16 and 25, has placed an important emphasis on civic values. Religious leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Robert Carey and the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Jonathan Sacks, have called for a renewed sense of moral responsibility. At present all the three main political parties appeal to the electorate's sense of civic responsibility and the "New Labour" government sees …

An Atypical Affair? Alexander The Great, Hephaistion Amyntoros And The Nature Of Their Relationship, Jeanne Reames Jan 1999

An Atypical Affair? Alexander The Great, Hephaistion Amyntoros And The Nature Of Their Relationship, Jeanne Reames

History Faculty Publications

Most recent Alexander historians - especially those writing after Stonewall - assume that the friendship of Alexander the Great and Hephaistion Amyntoros was not purely platonic.2 Despite this, the names of Alexander and Hephaistion rarely find their way into modem lists of ancient lovers, nor are they much mentioned in studies of Greek homoeroticism3 - perhaps because they fail to fit the model first detailed by K.J. Dover in 1978. This dichotomy is a curiosity of recent specialization in classics. Alexander historians assume the affair while historians of Greek sexuality ignore it. In any case, the matter of …

Inhibition Of Cpla2-Mediated Arachidonic Acid Release By Cyclic Amp Defines A Negative Feedback Loop For P2y-Receptor Activation In Mdck-D1 Cells, Mingzhao Xing, Steven Post, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Michael Samardzija, Paul A. Insel Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Cpla2-Mediated Arachidonic Acid Release By Cyclic Amp Defines A Negative Feedback Loop For P2y-Receptor Activation In Mdck-D1 Cells, Mingzhao Xing, Steven Post, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Michael Samardzija, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In Madin-Darby canine kidney D1cells extracellular nucleotides activate P2Y receptors that couple to several signal transduction pathways, including stimulation of multiple phospholipases and adenylyl cyclase. For one class of P2Y receptors, P2Y2 receptors, this stimulation of adenylyl cyclase and increase in cAMP occurs via the conversion of phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-generated arachidonic acid (AA) to prostaglandins (e.g. PGE2). These prostaglandins then stimulate adenylyl cyclase activity, presumably via activation of prostanoid receptors. In the current study we show that agents that increase cellular cAMP levels (including PGE2, forskolin, and the β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol) can inhibit P2Y receptor-promoted AA release. The protein kinase …

Analysis Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery Under Moderate-Rate Discharge, Mukul Jain, Ganesan Nagasubramanian, Rudolph G. Jungst, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional mathematical model of a spirally wound lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery is developed and used for parameter estimation and design studies. The model formulation is based on the fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to estimate the transference number, the diffusion coefficient, and the kinetic parameters for the reactions at the anode and the cathode as a function of temperature. These parameters are obtained by fitting the simulated capacity and average cell voltage to experimental data over a wide range of temperatures (–55 to 49°C) and discharge loads (10-250 ). …

Study Of The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Tetraselmis Chuii Growth And Morphology, Charles T. Audette Jan 1999

Study Of The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Tetraselmis Chuii Growth And Morphology, Charles T. Audette

Open Access Master's Theses

Exposure of batch cultures of Tetraselmis chuii to three levels (0.020, 0.126 and 0.217 m W/cm2) of artificial UV-B caused a depression of exponential growth corresponding to UV-B dose. Three UV-B experiments were conducted. Cultures were maintained at 25 °C on a 18L:6D photoperiod for the first two experiments and at 12L: 12D for the last experiment. Growth was measured daily by measuring optical density at a standard wavelength of 750 nm. This was compared periodically with hemacytometer cell counts. Cell morphology (projected cell area, length, width, perimeter, and roundness) was determined by microscopic image analysis, and showed …

Christian Science, Rational Choice, And Alternative World Views, Peggy Desautels Jan 1999

Christian Science, Rational Choice, And Alternative World Views, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Book abstract: A chief aim of this resource is to rekindle interest in seeing health care not solely as a set of practices so problematic as to require ethical analysis by philosophers and other scholars, but as a field whose scrutiny is richly rewarding for the traditional concerns of philosophy.

Chapter abstract: The health-related choices made by Christian Scientists are often criticized as being irrational. It is difficult for those who turn to medical means for healing to understand how Christian Scientists can rationally justify avoiding those medical treatments known to be effective. What is especially confusing to the observer …

Praying For A Cure: When Medical And Religious Practices Conflict, Peggy Desautels, Margaret P. Battin, Larry May Jan 1999

Praying For A Cure: When Medical And Religious Practices Conflict, Peggy Desautels, Margaret P. Battin, Larry May

Philosophy Faculty Publications

When the children of Christian Scientists die from a treatable illness, are their parents guilty of murder for withholding that treatment? How should the rights of children, the authority of the medical community, and religious freedom be balanced? Is it possible for those adhering to a medical model of health and disease and for those adhering to the Christian Science model to enter into a meaningful dialogue, or are the two models incommensurable? DesAutels, Battin, and May engage in a lucid and candid debate of the issues of who is ultimately responsible for deciding these questions and how to accommodate …

Risk Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection Among Long-Term Residents In Developing Countries, Sylvia I. Becker, Roger D. Smalligan, John D. Frame, Harry Kleanthous, Timothy J. Tibbitts, Thomas P. Monath, Kenneth C. Hyams

UAB Huntsville Articles

The seroprevalence and incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection were determined among 312 North American missionaries who were serving in developing countries between 1967 and 1984. The majority (81%) resided in sub-Saharan Africa. When initially evaluated, the missionaries had a mean age of 40 years, 65% were female, and all were of white race/ethnicity. An ELISA showed that the initial prevalence of IgG antibody to H. pylori was 17%. After a mean of 7.4 years of service (1917 person-years of exposure), 37 (14%) of 259 initially seronegative subjects seroconverted to anti-H. pylori, giving an annual incidence of 1.9%. These data indicate …
