Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn Nov 1999

Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn

Elizabeth Cook-Lynn Collection

A collection of three novellas spanning several decades, Aurelia tells of the invasion of Indian lands, the destruction of a river--the Missouri, or Mni Sosa--in the twentieth century, the continued failure of the people of the Northern Plains (both Indian and white) to refute historical fraud, and the grief and joy of an American Indian family.
The first novella in this collection, From the River's Edge (first published as a single volume by Arcade Publishing, 1991), is the story of John Tatekeya's (tah-tAY-kee-ya) efforts to obtain reparation in a white man's court for forty-five head of stolen cattle. Even as …

Pc Madness, O. V. Michaelsen

Word Ways

The past decade has given rise to the amusement of creating politically-correct definitions. Merriam-Webster researchers have found the term "politically correct" in H.V. Morton's book In The Steps of Saint Paul, (1936). It was reported that the term was used in a 1793 US Supreme Court decision.

The Pi Code, Michael Keith Nov 1999

The Pi Code, Michael Keith

Word Ways

Martin Gardner's fictional Doctor Matrix used to say that, property interpreted, the number pi (the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, whose decimal expansion begins 3.14159265897932384626...) contains the entire history of mankind. In this article I give some results of looking at pi in a relatively new way: as an infinite string of letters derived from its expansion in base 26 or base 27.

The Edaphic Factor And Patterns Of Variation In Lasthenia Californica (Asteraceae), Nishanta Rajakaruna, Bruce A. Bohm Nov 1999

The Edaphic Factor And Patterns Of Variation In Lasthenia Californica (Asteraceae), Nishanta Rajakaruna, Bruce A. Bohm

Biological Sciences

Transectional studies of Lasthenia californica in the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve (Stanford University) have documented the existence of two races (A and C) based upon flavonoid chemistry, achene morphology, allozymes, and flowering time differences. The two races coexist on a serpentine outcrop and have maintained a sharply defined pattern of distribution for a period of at least 15 yr. The present study has revealed significant differences in the physical and chemical features of the soils harboring the two races. Soils at the lower ends of the transects, where race A plants grow, have higher pH, cation exchange capacity, relative water …

Review Of The Western Australian Pilchard Fishery 12 -16 April 1999, K. L. Cochane

Fisheries Management Papers

A workshop was held on Monday 12 April 1999 at which presentations were made by representatives of Fisheries WA, speakers from other state fisheries agencies and the Western Australian (WA) pilchard industry. This workshop identified some of the key concerns in the assessment and management of the fishery. This report presents the conclusions reached by the reviewer at the end of the process, which were also presented to members of the WA pilchard fishing industry in Albany on Friday 16 April.

Construct Validity Of The Continuous Recognition Memory Test, K. L. Fuchs, J. H. Hannay, W. M. Huckeba, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

A principal factor analysis was performed on variables derived from a neuropsychological battery administered to 100 healthy young adults (aged 17-41 yrs) to investigate the construct validity of the Continuous Recognition Memory test (CRM). It was hypothesized that CRM "hits" and "false alarms" would load on different factors. The factors that emerged in the analysis were labeled Verbal Ability, Divided Attention, Attention to Visual Detail, Visuomotor Integration and Planning, and Learning and Memory. As expected, CRM hits had a significant loading on the Learning and Memory factor. However, CRM false alarms did not have a significant loading on the Divided …

Senior Engineering Design Conference

The 25th Conference on Senior Engineering Design Projects was held on November 30, 1999 at the College of Engineering and applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus of Western Michigan University. The college sponsors the conference to showcase the work of its graduating seniors, who are required to complete a capstone project that puts into practice what they have learned. Many of the projects are sponsored by business and industry.

The Predictive Use Of Event-Related Potentials In Language Development And The Treatment Of Language Disorders, Dennis L. Molfese, Victoria J. Molfese, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Attempts to relate what is currently known regarding the brain's involvement in language processing during the early years of life. The authors focus on the event related potential (ERP) as a means to study the neuroelectrical correlates of language in the brains of infants and children. After reviewing general information concerning ERPs and language, this presentation relates how neonatal ERP measures of phonetic discrimination predict later language and reading abilities.

A Near-Surface Microstructure Sensor System Used During Toga Coare. Part Ii: Turbulence Measurements, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Peter Hacker, H. Schoeberlein, M. Baker, A. Arjannikov

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

New techniques developed for near-surface turbulence measurements during the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) employ a difference in spatial scales of turbulence and surface waves. According to this approach, high relative speed of the measurements provides separation of the turbulence and surface wave signals. During the TOGA COARE field studies, highresolution probes of pressure, temperature, conductivity, fluctuation velocity, and acceleration were mounted on the bow of the vessel at a 1.7-m depth in an undisturbed region ahead of the moving vessel. The localization in narrow frequency bands of the vibrations of the bow sensors allows …

Historical Case Study Of Stella L. Wood, Bonnie G. Ostlund Nov 1999

Historical Case Study Of Stella L. Wood, Bonnie G. Ostlund

Theses and Graduate Projects

The focus of this historical case study is to examine the life of Stella Louise Wood, an educator recognized for her leadership in public kindergarten and teacher training in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She spearheaded the campaign for free public kindergartens in the city in 1896, and was the leader of its teacher training school for the following fifty-two years. In that time, Stella Wood shared her strong commitment to the youngest students and her dynamic spirit with over 2,500 teacher trainees, known as Miss Wood's girls. She lived to approve a merger of her school with Macalester College in St. Paul, …

Cationic 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(N-Methylpyridinium-4-Yl)Porphyrin Fully Intercalates At 5‘-Cg-3‘ Steps Of Duplex Dna In Solution, Anton B. Guliaev, Neocles B. Leontis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The interaction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)p (T4MPyP4+ with the oligonucleotide DNA duplex [d(GCACGTGC)](2) was studied by two-dimensional 1H NMR spectroscopy, optical absorbance, circular dichroism, and molecular dynamics simulation employing particle mesh Ewald methods. T4MPyP4+ is one of the largest aromatic molecules for which intercalative binding to DNA has been proposed, although this has been called into question by recent X-ray crystallographic work [Lipscomb et al. (1996) Biochemistry 35, 2818-2823]. T4MPyP4+ binding to [d(GCACGTGC)]2 produced a single set of (mostly) upfield-shifted DNA resonances in slow exchange with the resonances of the free DNA. Intra- and intermolecular NOEs …
