A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari Dec 1999

A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "A Comparative Approach to European Folk Poetry and the Erotic Wedding Motif," Louise O. Vasvari posits that while the corpus of folk poetry in any one area of Europe always differs from neighboring traditions, of greater interest is the existence of a large amount of related material across the continent. Nevertheless, while research in folk poetry has been rich in field collecting and cataloguing, there exists little in-depth comparative study of folk poetry. Doubtless, this is owing in part to the fact that the great majority of the texts are accessible only in the original language or …

A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry Dec 1999

A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Andrea Fábry discusses in her article, "A Comparative Analysis of Text and Music and Gender and Audience in Duke Bluebeard's Castle," the image of Bluebeard as a metaphor for gender relations. Béla Bartók's opera and its libretto represent a prime example of the metaphor that in turn can be found in a range of text types, from fairy tales through novels to films. In the article, Fábry analyzes Bartók's contribution to the metaphor, namely with his opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle. She relates the opera to the text of the opera's libretto, written by film theoretician Béla Balázs, and places her …

Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas Dec 1999

Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Frank de Glas discusses in his article, "Literature, 'In-House' Writers, and Processes of Success in Publishing," the fact that too many studies of twentieth-century publishing practices concentrate on individual case studies while neglecting more general patterns and that too little use is made of theoretical concepts developed in the sociology of cultural production. He argues that one of the contributing elements in the economic and artistic success of a publishing house is the bringing together of a productive group of "in-house authors." To build up and to maintain such a group, publishers steadily launch new authors who they hope will …

Western Mediations In Reevaluating The Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis Of Gothár's Time Stands Still And Andonov's Yesterday, Roumiana Deltcheva Dec 1999

Western Mediations In Reevaluating The Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis Of Gothár's Time Stands Still And Andonov's Yesterday, Roumiana Deltcheva

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Roumiana Deltcheva's article, "Western Mediations in Reevaluating the Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis of Gothár's Time Stands Still and Andonov's Yesterday," offers a comparative analysis of two films, Peter Gothár's Time Stands Still and Ivan Andonov's Yesterday. Both films appeared in the 1980s, in Hungary and Bulgaria, respectively, and were highly acclaimed by the critics and the audience. Both films deal with the Communist past of these two countries. In her analysis, Deltcheva's adopts the perspective of "in-between peripherality," a particular manifestation of the post-colonial paradigm in its application to East Central and Central Europe. The two films use similar …

Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, 'History,' And The Other, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek Dec 1999

Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, 'History,' And The Other, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, 'History,' and the Other," Steven Tötösy discusses the historical background of Michael Ondaatje's novel, The English Patient (1992). The historical background and its analysis extend to selected aspects of Anthony Minghella's and Michael Ondaatje's adaptation of the novel to film (1996) and the ensuing controversy after the release of the film. From the historical background Tötösy designates as the "Almásy theme" of the novel and the film, he relates Ondaatje's engagement of the protagonist -- Central European Hungarian László Almásy -- to the notion of the Other as a historical and fictional …

Case Studies Of Organizational Evaluation In Community Foundations, Joyce Box Brown Dec 1999

Case Studies Of Organizational Evaluation In Community Foundations, Joyce Box Brown

Dissertations

Community foundations are classified as public charities (501(c) 3). They derive their funds from many donors rather than a single donor, and the board is made up of representatives from the community served. They are most often established to serve a specific geographic area. This study investigated and described how three different community foundations approach organizational evaluation— choosing proposals to fund, monitoring programs, improving programs, and assessing program impact.

The three community foundations approach evaluation not as a formal system of grant accountabilities, but as a way of systematically gathering information from various constituents for purposes of guiding important decisions. …

The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott Dec 1999

The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott

Theses (Pre-2016)

The challenge that present scholars have to face is constructing a literary history that includes the aesthetics of Dunbar, which is traceable to and predetermined by the experimental, Romantic tendencies of Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. Therefore, application of the literary trends and techniques of the Romantic era, which emphasizes the Expressive theory, lends itself to the hypothesis of this study: Dunbar's nature lyrics, like those of the British Romantics, reflect experiments with language, tone and subject matter as prefigured by Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the literary English works of Paul Laurence Dunbar …

Evaluation Of Sampling Methodologies For Assessing Fish Species Richness In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Evan Robertson Crews Dec 1999

Evaluation Of Sampling Methodologies For Assessing Fish Species Richness In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Evan Robertson Crews

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I evaluated the adequacy of different electrofishing approaches for estimating species richness in small Ridge and Valley streams. My study objectives were to determine the effects of the sampling season, reach length, habitat sequences surveyed, and sampling intensity on estimates of fish species richness. Fish assemblages were sampled at 18 sites across five streams in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, May-June (spring) and July-August (summer) 1998. Reach lengths ranged from 103 to 278 m (30 to 61 times the mean stream width [MSW]). At each site, fish were collected using one or two backpack electrofishers within habitat-specific enclosures (riflle-run or pool). …

Effects Of Watershed Land Use On The Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Paul Leiper Freeman

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A total of 20 sites in five Ridge and Valley streams located in Chattanooga, Tennessee were sampled May 8, 1998 to June 18, 1998 using quantitative and qualitative macroinvertebrate sampling techniques. All streams sampled were part of the Tennessee River drainage system and eventually contribute to Nickajack Reservoir. The 20 sites were second to fourth order streams with drainage areas of 3.8 to 46.9 (km2) and elevations of 195 to 232 (m). Sites with different percentages of agricultural, urbanized and forested land-use were selected to best evaluate the resulting impacts of urbanization and other anthropogenic activities on the invertebrate community …

Extension's Portfolio For The 21st Century: A Place For One-On-One Consultations, Peggy Petrzelka, Steve Padgitt, Wendy Wintersteen

Journal of Extension

Revisits the individual consultations that provided the base from which the Cooperative Extension Service grew. Using data gathered from clients' and Extension staff evaluations of one-on-one activities, our findings show these consultations have an economic and educational value for clients. The consultations benefit field specialists as well, augmenting their need assessments by providing information from in the field, providing opportunities for on-going research, and building credibility. It is maintained that continuing (or re-implementing) these consultations as part of Extension's portfolio for the 21st Century has mutual benefit, both to the client and to Extension.

Taking The Time To Ask: An Assessment Of Home Economics Agents' Resource And Training Needs, Anne Murphy, Gayle Coleman, Pat Hammerschmidt, Kathy Majewski

Journal of Extension

Michigan State University Extension food, nutrition and health campus-based staff members conducted a needs assessment of county home economics agents to obtain information to drive decision making for programs, resources and training and to build rapport with county agents. The methods used to collect this crucial information were personal telephone interviews with 62 county agents and a follow-up printed questionnaire. Findings supplied a wealth of information for campus staff members to use to establish priorities about program planning and support, select or develop materials or other resources, and plan and implement training appropriate and helpful to county staff.

Helping Children Cope With Divorce, Beth D. Gaydos, Shelly Schwieterman, Bruce P. Zimmer

Journal of Extension

Children of divorce are at risk for increased emotional and educational problems including anxiety and depression. A two-hour, court mandated program entitled "Helping Children Cope with Divorce" was developed to help parents understand these risks as well as how to communicate with children about the divorce and help children adjust to the changes in the family. Through a variety of educational methods, parents learn how to keep children out of the crossfire. The authors have surveyed nearly 340 program participants with end-of-meeting evaluations which revealed that parents now recognize that their children are more affected by divorce than they realized.
