Evaluation Of The Transport Properties Of Gasb For Bipolar Applications Through Monte Carlo Simulations, Damayanthi Palaniappan Oct 1999

Evaluation Of The Transport Properties Of Gasb For Bipolar Applications Through Monte Carlo Simulations, Damayanthi Palaniappan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

GaAs is currently the semiconductor material of choice for high speed, low power applications. Its electronic transport properties are superior to almost all other semiconductors. It is also used in a variety of bipolar applications such as photodetectors and photo-mixers. However, as is well known, the hole mobility and related transport parameters of GaAs are not very good. This is a serious drawback, and poses a potential problem for all applications involving bipolar conductivity. In order to increase the high :frequency limits and high-speed capability of bipolar devices, the choice of an alternative material, therefore, becomes necessary. An important first …

Protecting Privacy On The Front Page: Why Restrictions On Commercial Use Of Law Enforcement Records Violate The First Amendment, Jason L. Cagle Oct 1999

Protecting Privacy On The Front Page: Why Restrictions On Commercial Use Of Law Enforcement Records Violate The First Amendment, Jason L. Cagle

Vanderbilt Law Review

An individual is involved in an automobile accident and is arrested for driving under the influence. A few days after being re- leased, he receives several letters in the mail. One is from a chiropractor offering services to treat his injuries. Another is from an alcohol abuse treatment center. Yet another is from an attorney who defends traffic offenses. Each of the solicitors obtained the individual's name and address from publicly available records concerning the incident. The letters are truthful and not misleading, but utilize publicly available information for purely commercial purposes at the expense of the individual's privacy.

Buying For The Cold War: Influences On Air Force Procurement, 1945-1956, William Cline

History Theses & Dissertations

Military planning and buying changed dramatically after World War II as more attention and resources were applied toward the development of a strategy that made air power the center of strategic thinking. Nevertheless, when by 1947, aircraft production dropped so low as to threaten the viability of the aircraft industry, President Truman formed the President's Air Policy Commission, which spawned a cooperative effort between government and industry.

The relationship between government officials, particularly in the military, and industry executives became so close in the next decade that the health of the aircraft industry became linked with that of the military. …

Using Mediation In Canadian Environmental Tribunals: Opportunities And Best Practices, Matthew Taylor, Patrick Field, William Tilleman, Lawrence Susskind Oct 1999

Using Mediation In Canadian Environmental Tribunals: Opportunities And Best Practices, Matthew Taylor, Patrick Field, William Tilleman, Lawrence Susskind

Dalhousie Law Journal

The popularity of alternate dispute resolution (ADR) has been growing for decades, particularly in the United States and now in Canada. Although ADR has become increasingly popular in the Canadian administrative context, it faces certain difficulties arising from the public interest mandate of many tribunals, in particular environmental tribunals. These difficulties include conventional and institutional problems, such as conflict assessment, communications with and between parties, selecting and training the mediator (tribunal member, staff, or third party?), and identification of the proper parties and competing interests. There are also concerns specific to Canadian environmental tribunals. How do they protect the public …

Spirits In A Material World: Intelligent Agents As Intermediaries In Electronic Commerce, Ian R. Kerr Oct 1999

Spirits In A Material World: Intelligent Agents As Intermediaries In Electronic Commerce, Ian R. Kerr

Dalhousie Law Journal

The article provides an in-depth analysis of the contract issues peculiar to automated electronic commerce. The aim of the study is to provide a critical evaluation of the various solutions that might be adopted by a legislature seeking to cure formal defects in agreements that are negotiated and entered into by software programs, independent of human review. The author begins with an examination of the current state of the technology that automates electronic commerce, offering some speculation as to its future development. He then outlines the barriers to automated electronic commerce inherent in traditional contract doctrine. He argues against the …

Taking Stock: Securities Markets And The Division Of Powers, Robert Leckey, Eric Ward Oct 1999

Taking Stock: Securities Markets And The Division Of Powers, Robert Leckey, Eric Ward

Dalhousie Law Journal

Recent developments in Canada's securities markets highlight their national character and call for a fresh consideration of the question of federal securities regulation. Developments in the constitutional case law have changed the legal context, such that the trade and commerce and the peace, order and good government powers under the Constitution Act, 1867 would likely support federal securities legislation. The securities question, important in its own right, also serves as a case study for how the Supreme Court of Canada conducts division of powers analysis for matters that have undergone substantive change. The authors contend that competence over a provincial …

Background And Synopsis: Symposium On The Great Plains Grasslands At The Millennium, J. E. Mitchell, Svata M. Louda, B. Gillam

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Research on biodiversity, landscape ecology, grazing management, greenhouse gas effects, control of invasive species, riparian ecology, sustainable development, and related fields is forging a new and broader understanding of the Great Plains and its grassland ecosystems. This research documents dramatic changes that are taking place across the Great Plains and their consequences. First, we review the factors that led to the January 1999 symposium, "Great Plains at the Millennium," sponsored by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, USDA Forest Service, Ecological Society of America, Society for Range Management, as well as the Center for Grassland Studies and the Center for Great …

Sustainability Of Human Communities In Prairie Grasslands, Cornelia Butler Flora Oct 1999

Sustainability Of Human Communities In Prairie Grasslands, Cornelia Butler Flora

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Explorers and colonists in the American grasslands viewed the landscape as barren and its people as savage. Both the land and its people needed to be controlled, and this often led to the destruction of both the environment and its inhabitants. Our perception of the landscape influences our actions toward it. As we redefine our perception of the landscape, we act differently toward it. We have begun to appreciate the important ecological functions provided by prairie grasslands. Understanding all the resources in plains communities - the human, social, financial and environmental forms of capital - and the impact of each …

Comparative Ecology Of Bison And Cattle On Mixed-Grass Prairie, Allen Steuter, Lori Hidinger Oct 1999

Comparative Ecology Of Bison And Cattle On Mixed-Grass Prairie, Allen Steuter, Lori Hidinger

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

We study bison (Bos bison) herds that are managed year-long without protein or energy supplements in large mixed prairie pastures in Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. We also manage cattle (B. taurus) grazing during the growing season in separate, but adjacent pastures. Management reflects the divergent evolution of bison and cattle with their respective human cultures and landscapes. Bison exhibit a stronger preference for the perennial grasses that form the prairie matrix, and they are strongly attracted to open landscapes during the growing season. Cattle include more forbs in their diet, and they use wooded …

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This research has directed attention towards comparing and understanding the characteristics of both native and migrant populations and both recent and long-term migrant populations in the state of Virginia. The research question is: how does migrant population differ from native population? And how do recent migrants differ from long-term migrants in terms of their employment status, occupation, income, home ownership, quality of housing and amount of rent. This study utilizes data from the 5 percent sample of the U.S. 1990 Census. Cross tabulation and analysis of variance are used to compare migrant with native population and recent migrants with long-term …

Attorney-Client Relationships In Cyberspace: The Peril And The Promise, Catherine J. Lanctot Oct 1999

Attorney-Client Relationships In Cyberspace: The Peril And The Promise, Catherine J. Lanctot

Duke Law Journal

Despite the legal profession's historical resistance to technological advances, the burgeoning world of cyberspace is bringing change to the practice of law. As laypeople flock to the Internet to seek help with their legal problems, lawyers are going online to provide such assistance. Yet, these exchanges are occurring without close consideration of whether they create attorney-client relationships-the source of weighty ethical and legal obligations. In many cases, lawyers seek to avoid the consequences of such relationships merely by disclaiming their existence. In this Article, Professor Lanctot examines the issue of lawyer-layperson communications in cyberspace from doctrinal and historical perspectives. The …

Work-Life Role Integration: A Construct Validation Study, Tonya Alicia Miller Oct 1999

Work-Life Role Integration: A Construct Validation Study, Tonya Alicia Miller

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Two studies were conducted to define and validate the theoretical construct, role integration. Study 1 focused on producing a theoretical definition and a psychometrically sound measure. Content, convergent, and discriminant validity evidence was collected. Study 2 provided further validity evidence for the role integration construct by testing a conceptual model and refining the role integration measure. Study 1 and Study 2 established a psychometrically sound 12-item, two-factor role integration measure. The first factor focused on knowledge, skills, and experiences (KSE). The second factor focused on values, beliefs, and attitudes (VBA).

The conceptual model in Study 2 added the role integration …

Reimbursement For Pharmaceutical Care Services: The California Experience, Jeffery A. Goad, Kathleen Johnson, Michael Rudolph

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"While it is true that pharmacists are changing their practice habits, they are doing so for the betterment of their patients’ drug therapy outcomes and the healthcare system. The pharmacist serves as the vital link between the patient, physician, and healthcare system. By working with patients and physicians, pharmacists have demonstrated in the literature that they can improve patient drug therapy outcomes, thus preventing unnecessary healthcare expenditures (Fincham, 1998). Pharmacists have long been held in highest esteem by patients, being voted the number one trusted professional for 10 consecutive years. The evidence is clear that pharmacists provide a valuable service …

The Influence Of Fathering On Child Outcomes, Judith Joye Lehman

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examines complex relationships between fathering and children's social, behavioral, and cognitive development. The participants were 57 families with a child between the ages of 7 and 12. Fathers were interviewed about their disciplinary practices, work history, and day to day involvement with their children. Fathers also completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991) which is designed to assess children's internalizing and externalizing behavior. Mothers were administered the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale - Survey Form (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984), the CBCL, and a background questionnaire. Children were administered the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1987) and the …

Assessing Medical Students' Competence In Obtaining Informed Consent""", Laura Weiss Roberts, Jan Mines, Carolyn Voss, Cheri Koinis, Steve Mitchell, Scott Obenshain, Teresita Mccarty

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Medical schools increasingly place emphasis on preparing students to perform routine, ethically important clinical activities with sensitivity and acumen. A method for evaluating students skills in obtaining informed consent that was created at our institution is described. METHODS: Formal assessment of medical students' professional attitudes, values, and ethics skills occurs in the context of three required and developmentally attuned comprehensive examinations. A videotaped station tested senior medical students' ability to obtain informed consent from a standardized patient who expresses concern about undergoing cardiac catheterization. Two checklists were completed by the patient. Videotapes were reviewed by a faculty member, and …

Collaborative Problem Solving: Financial Education For Youth, Judy Mckenna, Jan Carroll Oct 1999

Collaborative Problem Solving: Financial Education For Youth, Judy Mckenna, Jan Carroll

Journal of Extension

Financial literacy is a highly promoted objective - one that takes many partners to address effectively. Colorado State University Cooperative Extension family economics specialists initiated a statewide collaborative effort to develop new ways to link financial education for youth to educators. An Economic Education Expo was planned which attracted more than 100 educators and 40 inner city, ethnically diverse young people. Adults attended workshops ranging from economic standards to personal finance. The young people shared a wide range of entrepreneurship experiences and expertise. A collaboration wall exercise after lunch gave participants an opportunity to write mini proposals for small grants. …
