A Comparative Study Of The Morale Levels Of Lower And Upper Elementary Public School Teachers, Marcellina Hummer Anderson
A Comparative Study Of The Morale Levels Of Lower And Upper Elementary Public School Teachers, Marcellina Hummer Anderson
Student Work
This study involved the development of a new instrument, the Teacher Outlook and Perceptions Survey, to explore the nature of teacher morale, what predicts teacher morale, and the influence of the anticipated outlook of the job situation on teacher morale. The instrument consisted of 47 items, including a global item in which teachers assessed their morale levels. The scores of the instrument produced an alpha reliability coefficient of .91. Elementary teachers from a large urban district participated in the study (N = 308). The instrument was based on a morale model developed by the researcher. Morale was defined as a …

The Other Way Round, Susan P. Koniak
The Other Way Round, Susan P. Koniak
Faculty Scholarship
There have always been sexy subjects, and there always will be. Some topics are sexy for a time and then fade into obscurity or become quaint anachronisms; the now-omnipresent Y2K problem is sure to meet some such fate. But there are other topics, such as, the connection between identical twins, incest, extraterrestrial life, dinosaurs, the American Civil War and evil, which just stay in vogue. Topics guaranteed to draw a crowd.
I am just as likely to be in that crowd as the next person. Having spent part of this afternoon watching a History Channel presentation on the Lizzie Borden …
Standards Of Care And Standard Form Contracts: Distinguishing Patient Rights And Consumer Rights In Managed Care, Wendy K. Mariner
Standards Of Care And Standard Form Contracts: Distinguishing Patient Rights And Consumer Rights In Managed Care, Wendy K. Mariner
Faculty Scholarship
There is hardly a legislature in the country that is not currently debating the issue of patient rights in managed care. Not surprisingly, legislators, as well as reporters covering the debate, have called upon George J. Annas, Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law and Chair of the Health Law Department at Boston University, for information and advice. Professor Annas has earned the title of "father of patient rights" for his decades of research, writing, and advocacy on behalf of individuals who need health care and deserve justice.
Today, however, one might ask whether patient rights are compatible with managed …
Service-Learning Is A Feminist Issue: Transforming Communication Pedagogy, Eleanor M. Novek
Service-Learning Is A Feminist Issue: Transforming Communication Pedagogy, Eleanor M. Novek
Service Learning, General
How do we "do" emancipatory feminist teaching when we have not observed it or experienced it ourselves? The author argues here that service-learning is a useful strategy for feminist communication educators to begin challenging the power relationships of traditional pedagogy. Pioneered in the 1960s and '70s, this pairing of traditional course work with community service is now used as a learning model in schools around the nation. Because service-learning allows educators to forge relational links between ourselves, our students, our neighbors, and the communities in which we live, it deserves careful consideration from feminist educators.
The Internet Name Game And The Nonprofit Solution, Roger A. Lohmann
The Internet Name Game And The Nonprofit Solution, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is a case study of the campaign to create a new internet names authority to handle the assignment of internet domain names. Almost everyone knows by now that the Internet was originally a defense research project, which morphed into a research network for scientists and then into a tool of higher education and eventually into the commercial and general household utility we know today. In terms familiar to nonprofit research community what began in the state sector, expanded into the third sector and then into the market and household sectors and the consumer economy. There is a second …

Marketing And The Tragedy Of The Commons: A Synthesis, Commentary, And Analysis For Action, Clifford J. Shultz, Morris B. Holbrook
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The authors contend that solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges will result from understanding and solving social traps such as the commons dilemma. They propose a synthesis for analysis and action to suggest that marketing's stakeholders can cooperate to contribute solutions and ultimately develop programs that help ameliorate the tragedy of the commons.
The Benefits Of Voluntary Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization: Myth Or Reality?, Donald H. Stone
The Benefits Of Voluntary Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization: Myth Or Reality?, Donald H. Stone
All Faculty Scholarship
Throughout the United States, mentally ill persons are confined against their will in psychiatric hospitals as a result of being accused of dangerous behavior. Some are committed involuntarily by a judge after an administrative hearing during which they are afforded legal representation, a right to be present, and important due process protections, including the right to cross-examine witnesses and present one's own witnesses. However, a significant number of individuals, initially confined in psychiatric institutions for allegedly posing a danger to life or safety, never see an impartial judge, lawyer, or even a family member. These mentally ill individuals are not …
Feminist Foundations For The Law Of Business: One Law And Economics Scholar's Survey And (Re)View, Barbara Ann White
Feminist Foundations For The Law Of Business: One Law And Economics Scholar's Survey And (Re)View, Barbara Ann White
All Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this Essay is to suggest frameworks and modes of inquiry for applying feminist legal analysis to business law and the related theory of law and economics. It does so in two ways. One is to assess works already written by feminist scholars in the business law arena, highlighting how those contributions have begun to pave the way towards enriching the scope of business law analysis. The other is to offer two new roles for feminist jurisprudence. One role is to define just (that is, fair) distributions of rights and the other role is to define social judgments …

Performing Selves/Performing As Self: Autobiographical Films Of Children Of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Jennifer Levi
Performing Selves/Performing As Self: Autobiographical Films Of Children Of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Jennifer Levi
Journal of Religion & Film
For many Holocaust survivors, one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is the simultaneous need to tell one's story and the awareness that language cannot convey the horrors of the experience. This awareness that words fall to communicate across generations, cultures, religions, etc. is the legacy of children of Jewish Holocaust survivors who both can't understand and are formed by their parents' stories/experiences. By engaging Deb Filler's film rendition of her one-woman stage show, Punch Me in the Stomach, and Abraham Ravett's documentary Everything's for You, I explore the ways in which film allows the second generation …
Theory Of Photon Coincidence Statistics In Photon-Correlated Beams, Majeed M. Hayat, Sergio N. Torres, Leno M. Pedrotti
Theory Of Photon Coincidence Statistics In Photon-Correlated Beams, Majeed M. Hayat, Sergio N. Torres, Leno M. Pedrotti
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The statistics of photon coincidence counting in photon-correlated beams is thoroughly investigated considering the effect of the finite coincidence resolving time. The correlated beams are assumed to be generated using parametric downconversion, and the photon streams in the correlated beams are modeled by two partially correlated Poisson point processes. An exact expression for the mean rate of coincidence registration is developed using techniques from renewal theory. It is shown that the use of the traditional approximate rate, in certain situations, leads to the overestimation of the actual rate. The error between the exact and approximate coincidence rates increases as the …

The Global Economic Outlook: Threats And Opportunities For The U.S. Mining Industry, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
The United States has built a unique service sector which is based on a unique industrial sector which is based on a unique mining sector. Harm any one of these three vital parts of our nation and you jeopardize the standard of living and future prospects of all our citizens. Now, the world economy is in the midst of a substantial and widespread upswing. In light of this positive outlook, the U.S. mining industry faces two primary threats: increased competition with international, overseas counterparts and the U.S. government's tendency to handicap American business via taxation, regulation, and intervention.

Women, Violence, And Gang Rape In Indonesia, Rudiah Primariantari
Women, Violence, And Gang Rape In Indonesia, Rudiah Primariantari
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article argues that the gang rapes of Chinese women during the May 1998 Jakarta riots were not spontaneous acts of violence but rather a deliberate strategy of political control and terror. It critiques the Indonesian government's denial and cover-up of these crimes, as well as its efforts to discredit human rights investigations. The analysis highlights how rape was used as a tool to instill fear and maintain power, while the government prioritized protecting its elite interests over justice and accountability.
