Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Experiment Using The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carol Emrich Oct 1999

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Experiment Using The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carol Emrich

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Satellite Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) was tested using the Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) Ka-band signal and Ultra Small Aperture Terminal (USAT) ground stations. The SCADA system included a photovoltaic (PV)/diesel hybrid power generator designed to provide electricity to a rural community in a developing country. End-to-end baseline hardware checkout experiments have been completed. Results show that continuous two-second data transfers for real time monitoring can be completed with an error rate of less than 1%. The system recovers from simulated perturbations quickly and gracefully. Specifically, normal operation is resumed within 36 seconds following loss of power to …

Sports Marketing Ethics In Today's Marketplace, Gene R. Laczniak, Richard H. Burton, Patrick Murphy Oct 1999

Sports Marketing Ethics In Today's Marketplace, Gene R. Laczniak, Richard H. Burton, Patrick Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Sports marketing is a fast-growing business endeavor. However, certain aspects of it have drawn criticisms from several corners (e.g., media, government, coaches, and fans). This paper raises a number of ethical questions about various dimensions of sports marketing. Advice for addressing some of the ethical problems that occur is provided. The paper specifically asks if organizations using professional sports associations as a promotional lever for increasing sales can be hurt by a lack of ethics on the part of the leagues, teams, or players. It also implies that sport organizations, regardless of economic benefits derived or strong player unions, have …

Service Learning And Assessment: A Field Guide For Teachers, Susan Bonthron, Rick Gordon

Evaluation/Reflection

Recent advances in understanding the human brain, intelligence, and how we learn1 indicate that successful schools need to provide
• rich, safe learning environments that address multiple realms of intelligence;
• opportunities for experiential learning to promote construction of knowledge and understanding;
• opportunities to develop both intelligence and skills through mediated learning;
• opportunities to transfer learning through reflection; and
• balanced assessment measures that include portfolios and performance assessments as well as more conventional standardized tests.

Miscellaneous Publication 53/99 - Ideas A Diversification Manual For The Pastoral Rangelands, Kaz Price, Lee Verios

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

In 1993 the Pastoral Wool Industry Task Force recognised the diminishing returns to wool production and the need for Rangeland enterprise diversification and other risk management strategies

This manual has been developed to assist pastoralists through the decision making process when considering diversification and contains:

  • business and finance planning;
  • business structures;
  • legislative requirements and also includes;
  • current contacts for a range of industries

The manual has been produced in response to a range of questions from pastoralists wishing to investigate and develop alternate enterprises for the semi-arid Rangelands of Western Australia.

Focal Point, Volume 13 Number 01, Portland State University. Regional Research Institute

Research and Training Center - Focal Point

This issue of Focal Point examines the ways in which families with employed caregivers and children with emotional and behavioral disorders manage to meet the demands of employment and family responsibilities. Finding a fit between the demands of work and family life is a struggle for every employed mother and father. For parents whose children have emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders, meeting this challenge can prove extremely stressful, particularly since supportive services are notably lacking. Although Fernandez has estimated that 10% of all employed parents have at least one child with a disability living in their homes, there has been …

Automated Bus Dispatching, Operations Control, And Service Reliability: The Initial Tri-Met Experience, James G. Strathman, Kenneth Dueker, Thomas J. Kimpel, Rick Gerhart, Ken Turner, Pete Taylor, Steve Callas, David Griffin Oct 1999

Automated Bus Dispatching, Operations Control, And Service Reliability: The Initial Tri-Met Experience, James G. Strathman, Kenneth Dueker, Thomas J. Kimpel, Rick Gerhart, Ken Turner, Pete Taylor, Steve Callas, David Griffin

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper presents findings on initial changes in service reliability following Tri-Met’s deployment of a new bus dispatching system using automatic vehicle location and automatic passenger counter technology. Changes in on-time performance, headway variation, run time variation, and run times were determined with respect to pre-deployment levels. Changes in headway variation and run times were also used to estimate the initial benefits of the new system with respect to operating costs, passenger waiting, and passenger travel time.

Feedback, Accountability, And The Standards-Based System, Dannelle D. Stevens Oct 1999

Feedback, Accountability, And The Standards-Based System, Dannelle D. Stevens

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The standards-based system provides feedback and accountability, and, more importantly, it challenges educators to re-examine basic assumptions about teaching, learning, and schooling. These assumptions are changing as a result of the standards-based system, and this has positively affected practices in the classroom.

The Globalization Of Production And The Changing Benefits Of Conquest, Stephen Brooks Oct 1999

The Globalization Of Production And The Changing Benefits Of Conquest, Stephen Brooks

Dartmouth Scholarship

This article examines the conditions under which conquest is likely to reap significant economic rewards. Scholars have largely focused on how the level of popular resistance within the vanquished country influences the benefits of conquest. What needs to be scrutinized in greater depth is how post–World War II economic transformations within the most advanced countries affect the benefits of conquest. This article focuses on examining one particular economic change that has been neglected for the most part in the secu- rity and peace literature: the globalization of production. The article delineates four recent changes in the structure of global production …

Impact Of Heterogeneity On Dsm Performance, Renato J. O.. Figueiredo, José A. B. Fortes Oct 1999

Impact Of Heterogeneity On Dsm Performance, Renato J. O.. Figueiredo, José A. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper explores area/parallelism tradeoffs in the design of distributed shared-memory (DSM) multiprocessors built out of large single-chip computing nodes. In this context, area-efficiency arguments motivate a heterogeneous organization consisting of few nodes with large caches designed for single-thread parallelism, and a larger number of nodes with smaller caches designed jror multi-thread parallelism. This paper quantitatively studies the performance of such organization for a set of homogent: ous multiprocessor programs from the SPLASH-2 benchmark suite. These programs are mapped onto the heterogeneous processors without source code modifications via static thread a.ssignment policies. A constant-area simulation analysis shows that a 4-node …

Queueing Analysis With Gaussian Inputs Including Srd, Lrd, And Self-Similar Processes, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff Oct 1999

Queueing Analysis With Gaussian Inputs Including Srd, Lrd, And Self-Similar Processes, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we study the supremum distribution of a general class of Gaussian processes {Xt : t 2 0) having stationary increments. This distribution is directly related to the steady state queue length distribution of a queueing system, and hence its study is also important for various applications including communication network analysis. Our study is based on Extreme Value Theory and we show that logP({supt,, - Xt > x)) + m,/2 asymptotically grows at most (on the order of) logx, where m, corresponds to the reciprocal of' the maximum (normalized) variance of Xt. This result is considerably stronger than the …
