Young Chinese Esl Children's Home Literacy Experiences, Hong Xu

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article describes home literacy experiences of six Chinese ESL kindergartners. The experiences include the parents' provision of literate home environments as well as children's functional use of Chinese and English and engagement in Chinese and English literacy activities. The findings indicate the diverse and cultural nature of the home literacy experiences and the supportive roles of parents and other family members. Suggestions for teachers and parents to promote ESL children's literacy development are discussed.

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Bad Human Factor Designs, Paul Savory Oct 1999

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Bad Human Factor Designs, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Ergonomics or human factors does not only encompass product design, but safety, and product use. A simple definition is “to make the work place safe and less stressful on the worker.” Human factors or ergonomics impacts all aspects of our lives. Let's consider each of the following examples of bad human factor designs.

Impact Of Transmission Impairments On The Teletraffic Performance Of Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Debasish Datta, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee Oct 1999

Impact Of Transmission Impairments On The Teletraffic Performance Of Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Debasish Datta, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

In a wavelength-routed optical network, a transmitted signal remains in the optical domain over the entire route (lightpath) assigned to it between its source and destination nodes. The optical signal may have to traverse a number of crossconnect switches (XCS’s), fiber segments, and optical amplifiers, e.g., erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s). Thus, while propagating through the network, the signal may degrade in quality as it encounters crosstalk at the XCS’s and also picks up amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise at the EDFA’s. Since these impairments continue to degrade the signal quality as it progresses toward its destination, the received bit error …

Strategic Teaching And Strategic Learning In First Grade Classrooms, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch, Dodie Magill, Marie Dean Oct 1999

Strategic Teaching And Strategic Learning In First Grade Classrooms, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch, Dodie Magill, Marie Dean

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this article the authors describe Reading Express, a collaborative program which brings together the expertise of first-grade teachers and Reading Recovery teachers to support all first-grade children in literacy development. In the Reading Express program, the Reading Recovery teachers spend one hour per day in each of the first grade classrooms. This time is spent in both whole class as well as small group instruction. The results of Reading Express have been positive for both first-grade children as well as teachers. End-of-year text-level scores and other data indicate that the program is having a positive impact on students' literacy …

Applications Of Cloze Procedure To Reading Assessment In Special Circumstances Of Literacy Development, Norbert Francis Oct 1999

Applications Of Cloze Procedure To Reading Assessment In Special Circumstances Of Literacy Development, Norbert Francis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study forms part of an on-going investigation of second language reading development of elementary school children from a bilingual, indigenous, community where high levels of proficiency in both languages are common among all age groups. Modifications were applied to the standard rational deletion cloze procedure to adapt assessment to the special sociolinguistic circumstances of reading in an indigenous language, and for the purpose of exploring practical classroom applications of the cloze procedure for instruction.

Introduction, B. Zorina Khan Oct 1999

Introduction, B. Zorina Khan

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

The significant breakthrough in plant biotechnology is the development of techniques to transform genes from unrelated sources into commercially important crop plants to develop resistance against insect pests. A local cotton cultivar MNH-93 was transformed through Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58C(1) assisted by bombardment with tungsten particles. The Agrobacterium strain contained the recombinant binary vector pKMAB harboring crylAb under 35S promoter. Neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII) gene was used as a selectable marker at a concentration of 50 mg L-1. The transformation efficiency remained 0.26%. The primary transformants were analyzed for transgene integration and expression through PCR and Southern Blotting and Western dot …

The Relationship Among Knowledge Of, Attitudes Toward, And Use Of Portfolios For Assessment By Teacher Education Professors, Naomi C. Coyle Oct 1999

The Relationship Among Knowledge Of, Attitudes Toward, And Use Of Portfolios For Assessment By Teacher Education Professors, Naomi C. Coyle

Doctoral Dissertations

The major purpose of this study was to examine the evaluation of portfolios as an alternative assessment tool along with those factors which influence the implementation practices of portfolios by faculty in colleges of education. The specific goals of this study were to determine the relationship between college and university professors' knowledge of portfolio assessment and their attitudes toward using portfolios as an alternative to traditional assessment practices, as well as college and university professors' knowledge of portfolio assessment and use of portfolios in the courses that they teach, and professors' attitudes and use of portfolios. Other areas of investigation …

Malone V. Brincat: The Fiduciary Disclosure Duty Of Corporate Directors Under Delaware Law, Nicole M. Kim Oct 1999

Malone V. Brincat: The Fiduciary Disclosure Duty Of Corporate Directors Under Delaware Law, Nicole M. Kim

Washington Law Review

In Malone v. Brincat, the Supreme Court of Delaware significantly broadened the fiduciary disclosure duty of corporate directors under Delaware law. Malone allows shareholders to bring either a direct or a derivative action against directors for the public release of misleading financial statements reported to the Securities Exchange Commission, regardless of whether the alleged misstatements were made in connection with a request for shareholder action. The court also held that a federal preemption statute, the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act of 1998, did not preempt the shareholders' action in Delaware state court. This Note argues that the Supreme Court …

Transformational Leadership: A Case Study Of Vaclav Havel, Neal Hauser Oct 1999

Transformational Leadership: A Case Study Of Vaclav Havel, Neal Hauser

Theses and Graduate Projects

The focus of this political-historical case study is based on the leadership style of Vaclav Havel, the current president of the Czech Republic. The writer, playwright, prisoner and dissident led the peaceful overthrow of the Communist government in Czechoslovakia in 1989, and was the country's first democratically elected president in over fifty years. The premise of this case study has two parts. The first part identifies the leadership characteristics and qualities demonstrated by Vaclav Havel. Part two consists of evaluating Havel's leadership style with contemporary theories of leadership.

This study will show that Havel exhibits a transformational leadership style demonstrated by …
