Acoustic Propagation Over A Range-Dependent Bathymetry, Joseph M. Riley Jan 1999

Acoustic Propagation Over A Range-Dependent Bathymetry, Joseph M. Riley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Experimental measurements have been conducted to investigate the effects of a three dimensional bathymetry on ocean acoustic propagation and our abilities to use array processing for localizing sources. This work is unique because it uses laboratory scale measurements to isolate the effects of the bottom bathymetry. Previous investigations using laboratory scale measurements have only used simplistic bottom profiles. In addition, experiments which have investigated the effects of the bottom bathymetry at sea have encountered difficulties isolating these effects due to range dependent sound speed profiles and the uncertainties of ocean acoustic experiments. The first part of this dissertation investigates the …

Analysis Of Modern Carbonate Sediments: Lubber's Bank, Abaco, Bahamas, Kenneth W. Banks Jan 1999

Analysis Of Modern Carbonate Sediments: Lubber's Bank, Abaco, Bahamas, Kenneth W. Banks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Bahamas archipelago is comprised of numerous carbonate platforms. Within these platforms are a variety of carbonate depositional environments, each unique and warranting detailed investigations of the interrelationships of physical conditions and trends in sediment texture and composition. This study examines one of these environments, Lubber's Bank. The bank is mapped and the physical hydrographic setting in the vicinity of the bank is examined through field measurements, analysis of satellite pictures and predictive techniques. This information is correlated with analysis of sediment texture and composition. Results indicate that the surface sediments on the bank probably originate in the surrounding sea …

Analysis Of Multiplexed Atm Traffics: A Large-Deviation Theoretic Approach, Malathi. Palaniappa Jan 1999

Analysis Of Multiplexed Atm Traffics: A Large-Deviation Theoretic Approach, Malathi. Palaniappa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

ATM multiplexing, (which is essentially a statistical multiplexing process with priority constraints) leads to a departure pattern of cells on the trunk (or bearer) line, characterized by the profiles of incoming traffics at the multiplexer. Such profiles are decided by the bit-rate variations and workload fluctuations of the associated sources, namely voice, data and video of the cells. Bit rate statistics of incoming traffic with priority constraints decide the clustered and/or non-clustered epochs of cells on the multiplexed fine. If the incoming traffic is delay-sensitive, it gets the priority in the multiplexing strategy and the associated cells inbiting no clusters; …

Bodies From The Darkside: Paradoxes Of Female Anatomy In The Rena Issance, Lana. Thompson Jan 1999

Bodies From The Darkside: Paradoxes Of Female Anatomy In The Rena Issance, Lana. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The body in anthropo logy represents more than a phys ical endpoint of human evolution. It is both the template for cultural imprint, and a symbol that communicates cultural information. ln the context of the Renaissance as an ethnographic e ntity, th e status of women is examined through two kinds of images: anatomic and fine art. Although the Renaissance is generally heralded as a boundary between medieval superstition and humanism, with its improvement in the quality of life, few scholars have examined if that change applied to women. Using Kelly-Gadol's thesis that women did not have a renaissance in …

Characterization Of The Acoustic Signature Of An Ocean Explorer Class Auv, Frederic Lionel Lambe Jan 1999

Characterization Of The Acoustic Signature Of An Ocean Explorer Class Auv, Frederic Lionel Lambe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The radiated noise from Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV's) can interfere with on-board sensors and with certain type of missions. It is thus important to understand the parameters controlling the AUV self noise. In this thesis, measurement techniques and analyses are developed to investigate the mechanisms contributing to the acoustic noise of an Ocean Explorer class AUV. Measurements of the AUV acoustic signature are performed in a reverberant tank, after the tank is qualified to establish a reliable procedure to measure the AUV source levels. The measurement results are compared that obtained in an anechoic tank and in open-water. Acoustic measurements …

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang Jan 1999

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Communication is a key element of all business activities during any crisis situation. A company without a crisis management plan can suffer serious difficulties during and after a crisis. A good crisis communication plan cannot solve a crisis, but it can reduce the damage including helping to maintain a positive corporate identity and keeping the normal operation of a company. Four themes (caring, responsibility, honesty, and quick response) relative to crisis communication were examined in the 1987 and 1982 coverage of the Honda Water-Logged Car Crisis and the Tylenol Capsule Poisonings respectively. An investigation of these themes suggests how the …

Critical Comparison Of Three User Interface Architectures In Object-Oriented Design, David Paul Walls Jan 1999

Critical Comparison Of Three User Interface Architectures In Object-Oriented Design, David Paul Walls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Frameworks for the development of object-oriented, user interactive applications have been examined. Three alternate approaches have been explored; the Model-View-Controller (MVC) approach, the MVC++ approach and the Presentation-Abstraction-Control (PAC) approach. For the purpose of assessing the approaches, a simple engineering application was selected for object-oriented analysis using the three techniques. The utility of each technique was compared on the basis of complexity, extensibility and reusability. While the approaches aim to provide reusable user interface components and extensibility through incorporation of an additional class, only MVC++ and PAC truly achieve this goal, although at the expense of introducing additional messaging complexity. …

Classification And Evaluation Of Coastal Water Resources, Albert Naya Jan 1999

Classification And Evaluation Of Coastal Water Resources, Albert Naya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Water Resources (WR) agencies have recently shifted to holistic management approaches that combine the use of watersheds and ecoregions as complimentary tools. However, the classification of data is based on land used and land cover detection. In contrast, this research is concerned with inferring WR quality from the landscape using satellite imagery and aerial photography combined with collateral data. To conduct the study, three major procedures were devised: (1) construction of a classification system for regional coastal WR, (2) delineation of WR units based on the interpretation of water quality parameters (e.g. land use/cover, soil, vegetation, etc.), and (3) development …

Ethnographic interviews and a questionnaire reveal that: (1) Members and non-members show significant familiarity with black Greek culture and believe that the culture is meaningful to African-American culture overall, and that (2) Members and non-members believe …

Cultural Suicides, Island Retreats, And Diasporic Revelations: A Socio-Historical Approach To Paule Marshall's "Praisesong For The Widow" And Toni Morrison's "Tar Baby", Deonne Nicole Minto Jan 1999

Cultural Suicides, Island Retreats, And Diasporic Revelations: A Socio-Historical Approach To Paule Marshall's "Praisesong For The Widow" And Toni Morrison's "Tar Baby", Deonne Nicole Minto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

As reflected in Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow and Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, many black characters in literature with a Caribbean setting inhabit a realm of stasis. They negotiate two worlds---a white world with hierarchies of power and success and selective acceptance, and a black world, usually with restricted power. Caught between these two worlds, the exiled slowly begin to lose their sense of roots and to embrace cultural suicide. Some flee to the Caribbean, where they may regain what is lost. This paradise, with all its historical markers of the African diaspora, ultimately forces these characters either to …

Detection Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Signals In A Multipath Fading Environment, Claude. Jodoin Jan 1999

Detection Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Signals In A Multipath Fading Environment, Claude. Jodoin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In this thesis, we study the effect of Rice fading on the performance of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The field-theoretic foundation of pseudo-random-noise (PRN) codes, their implementation, and their use in generating unique navigation messages in the GPS receiver is reviewed. The processing of the spread-spectrum signals within the digital delay locked loop (DDLL) in the receiver is also considered. In particular, we derive numerical expressions that can be easily evaluated for the probability error and the mean-time to lose-lock, for a DDL operating in an additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel in the presence of Rice fading. The …

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska Jan 1999

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Research and a review of the related literature indicate that the United States defense industry has had a long history of unethical and illegal business practices. Recent polls find that most Americans believe that their nation's weapon acquisition system is one of the worst managed activities in the public or private sectors. The perception of our government as well as the general public is that the defense industry is neither efficient nor honestly managed. Although the defense acquisition process has been the subject of many reform efforts, it is reasonable to ask whether these reform efforts have had any success. …

Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Codes Using The Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm, Robert C. Dewsnap Jan 1999

Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Codes Using The Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm, Robert C. Dewsnap

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

There are various algorithms used for the iterative decoding of two-dimensional systematic convolutional codes in applications such as spread-spectrum communications and CDMA detection. The main objective of these decoding schemes is to approach the Shannon limit in signal-to-noise ratio while keeping the system complexity and processing delay to a minimum. One such scheme proposed recently is termed Turbo (de)coding. Through the use of Log-likelihood algebra, it is shown that a decoder can be developed which accepts soft inputs as a priori information and delivers soft outputs consisting of channel information, a priori information and extrinsic information to subsequent stages of …

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie Jan 1999

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The development of child language within the framework of the family has received increased interest in the past decade. One recent premise is that the use of specific types of language by adults in parent-child dyads affects development. These types of adult language, labeled as directives , are verbal behaviors that communicate to the child that he or she should do, say, or attend to something, and are considered to be related to episodes of joint attention. Posited by this model is that episodes of joint attention lead to greater language development. One type of directive, follow-in, is hypothesized to …

Development Of Internet-Based Data Management And Retrieval Schemes For Auv Applications, Gildas Yann Bayard Jan 1999

Development Of Internet-Based Data Management And Retrieval Schemes For Auv Applications, Gildas Yann Bayard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The rapid increase in the amount of data gathered by Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) leads to a global data management issue. Indeed, this large data collection effort is only interesting if the data collected can be easily retrieved and analyzed by many researchers. The main contribution of this thesis is the design of data management and retrieval schemes useful to the whole AUV community that both simplify the access and treatment of the data collected. This is achieved by the use of a self-describing standard data format (Hierarchical Data Format) and the use of Internet browsers' file download ability. Recent …

Development Of Math Strategies In A Sociocultural Context, Martha J. Hubertz Jan 1999

Development Of Math Strategies In A Sociocultural Context, Martha J. Hubertz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Current studies are rapidly investigating strategy choice on tasks such as math and reading that children encounter in day to day life; it follows that strategy development should also be examined in the naturalistic settings where children actually perform these tasks. From a sociocultural learning perspective, we examined five year old children's arithmetic strategy use, in a game context, with the most likely of mentors for a young child, his or her parents. Children played three games of a modified version of "Chutes and Ladders" with one of their parents. Children's strategy use and parents' behavior were coded and analyzed. …

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine On Memory For Sex-Typed Event Sequences By Preschool Children, Niveen Iskandar Jan 1999

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine On Memory For Sex-Typed Event Sequences By Preschool Children, Niveen Iskandar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Cocaine use during pregnancy has been associated with neurobehavioral and cognitive difficulties in infants and toddlers. The present study used an elicited imitation procedure to investigate memory for sex-typed event sequences in preschool children. Measures of immediate and delayed recall was assessed in three groups of children: drug-exposed, at-risk, and not-at-risk. Results indicated that (1) drug-exposed males showed no evidence of demasculinization and/or feminization, (2) drug-exposed children, in general, did not recall a fewer number of different target acts or fewer actions in the correct order than the at-risk or not-at-risk children, and (3) drug-exposed and at-risk children exhibited a …

Deposition And Chronostratigraphic Subdivision Of The Quaternary Sediments: Broward County, Florida, Jefferson Boehm Giddings Jan 1999

Deposition And Chronostratigraphic Subdivision Of The Quaternary Sediments: Broward County, Florida, Jefferson Boehm Giddings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The southern Florida peninsula has experienced numerous oscillations of sealevel during the Quaternary Period. Lithologic and stratigraphic interpretation of geologic borings collected in the region suggest five separate marine transgressions separated by periods of prolonged exposure. Subdivision of the marine units was through the recognition of lithologic changes and the identification of paleosols. Paleosols generally signify periods of subaerial exposure suggesting a hiatus between similar shallow water siliciclastic and carbonate marine deposits. Amino acid racemization on mollusk shells collected from the upper three units confirm the stratigraphic subdivision and suggest high sealevel stands and associated marine depositional events during oxygen …

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt Jan 1999

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Underwater acoustic communications are significantly affected by time-varying multipath. Time-delays induced by multiple reactors on boundaries can be compensated for through equalization, and good transmission can be achieved. However, soundwaves reflected from moving scatterers on the sea surface undergo slight variations in frequency that significantly degrade the performance of communication devices. Ocean data was collected to evaluate the amount of Doppler-spread induced by wind-driven surface waves. A model for the shallow water acoustic channel is discussed and implemented using a simplified approach to the gaussian-beam ray-tracing algorithm. This leads to the definition of the spreading function, a convenient tool to …

This thesis studies a new architecture Mobile People Architecture (MPA) proposed by MosquitoNet research group at Stanford University, which is designed to put people, rather than the devices that people use, at the endpoints of communication session. Three usage scenarios in MPA are simulated using SES/Workbench. The Response Time and the Update Cost are used to evaluate the performance of above scenarios. The advantages and disadvantages …

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle Jan 1999

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examined the relationship between ethnicity and parents' compliance with immunizations of their children. Recent studies have shown that compliance rates for immunizations of children who were two years of age were below the standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics due to both health system barriers and family/child barriers. A survey of pediatric patients was conducted utilizing a convenience sample of 66 parents of children between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight months. The subjects were interviewed to determine factors affecting immunization compliance, including cultural factors consistent with the theoretical framework of Madeline Leininger. The statistical analysis …
