The two imidazole rings in the title compound, C8H10N4O, are almost coplanar, having an angle of 2.3 (2)° about the C-C bond connecting the rings. the conformation adopted is such that the nitrogen substituents (-H and -CH2CH2OH) are in a trans orientation. the molecules are connected by intermolecular O-H. . .O and N-H. . .N hydrogen bonds to yield an arrangement of pairs of molecules reminiscent of side-by-side stacks of crinkled ribbon.

The Meaning Of Religious Belief, Practice, And Community For Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs, Loren Dean Marks Jan 1999

The Meaning Of Religious Belief, Practice, And Community For Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs, Loren Dean Marks

Theses and Dissertations

While the tragedy of American fatherlessness has evoked a growing body of research, religious beliefs, practices, and communities have not been a significant part of the scholarly discussion. This article discusses possible reasons for this and reviews the religion and family literature with a focus on fathers. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 19 Latter-day Saint (LDS) fathers of children with special needs and analyzed to examine the meaning of religious experience for these fathers and their families. Analysis indicated three dimensions of religious experience: spiritual belief, religious practice, and faith community. The spiritual belief in an eternal perspective, including the …

Adult Romantic Attachment: Emotion Regulation Strategies And Relationship Satisfaction, Edith A. Myers Jan 1999

Adult Romantic Attachment: Emotion Regulation Strategies And Relationship Satisfaction, Edith A. Myers

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Attachment theory, originally postulated by John Bowlby and further developed by Mary Ainsworth and colleagues, has recently been proposed as an organizational framework for the study o f close relationships in adults (Hazan & Shaver, 1994). A central aspect of attachment is the regulation o f emotional distress within a close relationship. This usually involves seeking the support of a close relationship partner. However, little research has focused on what types of emotion regulation behaviors are Attachment theory, originally postulated by John Bowlby and further developed by preferred by adults having different attachment styles. The present study attempted to elucidate …

The Influence Of Religiosity In The Construction Of Meaning From Advertising Messages Intended To Promote Lifestyle Values, Lillian Billing Jan 1999

The Influence Of Religiosity In The Construction Of Meaning From Advertising Messages Intended To Promote Lifestyle Values, Lillian Billing

Theses and Dissertations

Religiosity has largely been ignored by consumer research as a factor in the negotiation of meaning from magazine advertisements containing lifestyle messages. A meaning based study was undertaken to seek to identify its presence and emergence within a religious audience. A qualitative methodology employing in-depth, phenomenological interviewing was designed. Six members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, three men and three women, were invited to give their interpretations, thoughts, and feelings towards four magazine advertisements. A second in-depth phenomenological interview was conducted with each participant to provide individual lifeworld contexts. Analysis employed a previously tested conceptual construct, …

Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs: A Phenomenological Study, Michael M. Olson Jan 1999

Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs: A Phenomenological Study, Michael M. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

This research, presents a qualitative study of six Latter-day Saint fathers of children with special needs. In-depth interviews were used to examine the demands and resources fathers draw upon in meeting the needs of their child(ren), the application of the conceptual ethic of fathering as generative work and crisis/stress theory, as well as an analysis of how fathers incorporated their religious beliefs, faith, and practices into fathering their special needs children. Narrative accounts are used to illustrate the results. These results are then applied to an integrated conceptual framework and clinical applications are made.

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Approximate Agreement is an important issue in fault-tolerant distributed computing where non-faulty processes exchange and vote upon their local values, to arrive at values which are within the range of the initial values of the non-faulty processes and within a predefined tolerance of each other. Results to date in Approximate Agreement, however, are not capable of exploiting omission faults. Omission faults are presumed not to occur or a predefined default value is substituted for those values not received, or they are globally discarded before the voting algorithm executes. As a result, hybrid fault models can not differentiate between omissive and …

The Constitutional Dilemma Of Litigation Under The Independent Counsel System, William K. Kelley Jan 1999

The Constitutional Dilemma Of Litigation Under The Independent Counsel System, William K. Kelley

Journal Articles

The independent counsel system as established by the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 has put different components of the executive branch, such as the President and Department of Justice in the position of litigating against a special counsel. Litigation is not only a bad idea, it also gives rise to a serious constitutional dilemma. It either violates Article III because there is insufficient adversity to support litigation between the parties. Or it violates Article II, by preventing the President and his subordinates from controlling central functions of the executive branch, and places the independent counsel, an inferior officer, in …

Covenant And Contract, Steven Nock, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 1999

Covenant And Contract, Steven Nock, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

In this article we ask, "What distinguishes a covenant from a mere contract, and what role does this distinction play for natural law?" Both of us have thought substantially about covenant over the past several years. The concept of covenant comes to us originally from religious sources, so we have paid explicit attention to what the Bible and organized religion have to say about covenant. We have also drawn from our own disciplines of law, economics, and sociology as they explain or draw from the initial concepts.

Covenant is a concept that takes us beyond contract. Indeed, the idea that …

What Is The Common Good, And Why Does It Concern The Client's Lawyer?, John M. Finnis Jan 1999

What Is The Common Good, And Why Does It Concern The Client's Lawyer?, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Why is anything of real concern to any of us? Because, besides our simply emotional motives, we have reasons for action (which may be supported or opposed by our emotions). What are reasons for action? Some are instrumental, means to further ends: I have reason to start reading this paper to you, and you had reason to come back into the room to hear it. What reasons? Well, doing so is my contribution to this symposium's reflection on its subject-matter. That reflection, in turn, is intended to be instrumental in promoting a wider and deeper understanding of an important set …

Lassoing Legal Software, Pat Newcombe Jan 1999

Lassoing Legal Software, Pat Newcombe

Faculty Scholarship

In Texas, a statute prohibiting the unlicensed practice of law dates back to the Depression. Overseeing this statute is the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL) Committee, a state judicial panel formed to investigate and prosecute companies and individuals who practice law without a license. In 1998, the panel brought charges against Iowa-based Parsons Technology Inc., publisher of Quicken Family Lawyer. The committee claimed the software was designed in a manner that crossed the line of practicing without a license. They alleged that the software program, which features Harvard University law professor Arthur Miller guiding users through the steps to produce …

Giving Up And Giving In: Young Adolescents' Dilemmas When Caring For A Grandparent With Alzheimer's Disease, Diane Lee Beach Edd Jan 1999

Giving Up And Giving In: Young Adolescents' Dilemmas When Caring For A Grandparent With Alzheimer's Disease, Diane Lee Beach Edd

Dissertations

Caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease have been studied extensively; the vast majority of caregiver research has focused on spouses and adult children, negating the impact caregiving has on younger family members. Importantly, 75% of caregivers are female; 31% of these women have children at home under the age of 12 and 23% live with a child aged 12–17. As such, adolescents will be increasingly involved in the care of Alzheimer's victims. This study sought to examine the experiences of these individuals. Specifically, what is it like for an adolescent to provide care for a grandparent afflicted with Alzheimer's disease? …

Methods In Historical Ecology: A Case Study Of Tintic Valley, Utah, Jeffrey A. Creque, Neil E. West, James P. Dobrowolski

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Through use of repeat photography, archival research, and field observation to reconstruct landscape vegetation patterns and changes across a 120 year period in the upper Tintic Valley of central Utah, researchers found significant changes in landscape vegetation pattern over time, including change in pinyon-juniper woodland area. Previously reported massive woodland harvest associated with early mining, domestic and agricultural activities elsewhere in the Intermountain West also took place in Utah. The impact on woodland area of the agricultural "bull" fence alone was significant. More recent study area woodland expansion also occurred. Because intensive industrial activity associated with development of the Tintic …

Chakravarti V Advertiser Newspapers: Lessons For Journalists, Rhonda Breit Jan 1999

Chakravarti V Advertiser Newspapers: Lessons For Journalists, Rhonda Breit

Graduate School of Media and Communications

The lower courts are now interpreting the High Court's judgement in Chakravarti v Advertiser Newspaper Ltd, which was handed down in May 1998. As the lower courts grapple with the decision, journalists must still produce reports of complex legal matters. Unfortunately for Australian journalists, the Chakravarti decision has done little to clarify the uncertainty surrounding defamation law. In fact, the decision can be criticised for increasing that uncertainty. This article examines the effect of the Chakravarti case on journalism by analysing the text of the various judgements and: extracting the legal principles which bind journalist; identifying areas where the persuasive …
