A Hierarchical Analysis Approach For High Performance Computing And Communication Applications, Salim Hariri, Pramod Varshney, Luying Zhou, Vinod V. Menon, Shihab Ghaya

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The proliferation of high performance computers and high-speed networks has made parallel and distributed computing feasible and cost-effective on High Performance Computing and Communication Systems (HPCC). However, the design, analysis and development of parallel and distributed applications on such computing systems are still very challenging tasks. Therefore, there is a great need for an integrated multilevel analysis methodology to assist in designing and analyzing the performance of both existing and proposed systems. Currently, there are no comprehensive analysis methods that address such diverse needs. This paper presents a three-level hierarchical modeling approach for analyzing the end-to-end performance of an application …

Effects Of Diflubenzeron On The Ontogeny Of Phototaxis By Palaemonetes Pugio, J.E.H. Wilson, R.B. Forward Jr., J.D. Costlow Jan 1999

Effects Of Diflubenzeron On The Ontogeny Of Phototaxis By Palaemonetes Pugio, J.E.H. Wilson, R.B. Forward Jr., J.D. Costlow

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The phototaxis by larvae of the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio that hatched from embryos which were exposed to a single pulse concentration of diflubenzuron (DFB; Dimilin®) was quantified. Stage IV embryos (6-day-old) were exposed to 0.5 µg/L of DFB for 4 days followed by transfer into clean seawater for the rest of the incubation period. The photoresponses of light-adapted larvae from untreated embryos and embryos treated with 0.5 µg/L DFB were monitored from 1 day through 8 day post hatch for phototactic responses to 500 nm light. Larvae from untreated embryos exhibited strong positive phototaxis at high light intensities (3 …

Responses Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) And Other Diptera To Carbon Dioxide In Linear And Dense Forests, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, S. Mihok Jan 1999

Responses Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) And Other Diptera To Carbon Dioxide In Linear And Dense Forests, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The responses of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead and other Diptera to carbon dioxide were studied in linear and dense forests along the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya. Flies were caught in biconical traps and were intercepted with electric nets while in flight near traps. Carbon dioxide dispensed at a high rate (51 min-1) in linear forest failed to increase the numbers of tsetse attracted to or caught in traps. In contrast, catches of non-biting Muscidae, Stomoxyinae and Tabanidae were improved by up to 11 times. Inside dense forest, carbon dioxide released at half this rate increased both the numbers of …

Codes, Correlations And Power Control In Ofdm, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab, Kenneth G. Paterson Jan 1999

Codes, Correlations And Power Control In Ofdm, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab, Kenneth G. Paterson

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Practical communications engineering is continually producing problems of interest to the coding theory community. A recent example is the power-control problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). We report recent work which gives a mathematical framework for generating solutions to this notorious problem that are suited to low-cost wireless applications. The key result is a connection between Golay complementary sequences and Reed-Muller codes. The former are almost ideal for OFDM transmissions because they have a very low peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR), while the latter have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms and good error correction capability. This result is then …

More Lessons From The Laboratories: Cy Pres Distributions In Parens Patriae Antitrust Actions Brought By State Attorneys General, Susan Beth Farmer

Faculty Scholarship

The structure of the article is outlined in the Table of Contents. First, the article introduces a problem - the denial of an effective remedy for consumers overcharged by antitrust conspiracies, then it describes the legislative solution and identifies the unintended consequences that followed. Next, it proposes two alternative means to resolve the newly discovered issue and, finally, structures a proposed test for courts seeking to order the most efficient and effective remedy for consumers in these cases. The article explains that the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act was adopted to fill a gap in antitrust remedies, which had made treble …

Justice Blackmun's Mark On Criminal Law And Procedure, Kit Kinports Jan 1999

Justice Blackmun's Mark On Criminal Law And Procedure, Kit Kinports

Faculty Scholarship

When Justice Blackmun was nominated to the Court in 1970, Americans were consumed with the idea of crime control. In the 1968 presidential campaign, Richard Nixon had called the Supreme Court "soft on crime" and had promised to "put 'law and order' judges on the Court." While sitting on the Eighth Circuit, the Justice had "seldom struck down searches, seizures, arrests or confessions," and most of his opinions in criminal cases had "affirmed guilty verdicts and sentences." Thus, according to one commentator, Justice Blackmun seemed to be "exactly what Nixon was looking for: a judge who believed in judicial restraint, …

Mother Still Knows Best: Cancer-Related Gene Mutations, Familial Privacy, And A Physician's Duty To Warn, Alissa Jan 1999

Mother Still Knows Best: Cancer-Related Gene Mutations, Familial Privacy, And A Physician's Duty To Warn, Alissa

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The vows of the Hippocratic Oath which include a vow to abstain from sharing a patient's personal information remains an important tenet of medical care today. Physician-patient confidentiality even abstains sharing information with patients' families. However, when medical information affects the health of the patient's relatives, many medical professionals assert that they have a duty to share the information, with or without the patient's consent, particularly in the context of children of patients with genetic diseases and disorders, where forewarning may significantly decrease the risks or increase prevention of the effects of the disease or disorder. Currently, while physicians respect …

The Uncertain Legacy Of Gilmer: Mandatory Arbitration Of Federal Employment Discrimination Claims, John W.R. Murray Jan 1999

The Uncertain Legacy Of Gilmer: Mandatory Arbitration Of Federal Employment Discrimination Claims, John W.R. Murray

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The United States Supreme Court in Alexander v. Gardner-Denver Co. held that an employee could not be forced to arbitrate his discrimination claim against an employer pursuant to his union's collective bargaining agreement. Subsequent cases viewed Gardner-Denver as prohibiting mandatory arbitration in employment discrimination claims, until the Supreme Court upheld an agreement to submit all statutory discrimination claims to arbitration in Gilmer v. Interstate/Johnson Lane Corp. Gilmer seems to have limited the prohibition of mandatory arbitration in Gardner-Denver to collective bargaining agreements. Subsequently, many lower courts interpret Gilmer as an approval of arbitration clauses in employment agreements, and as such, …

Thinking Strategically: How Federal Prosecutors Can Reduce Violent Crime, Elizabeth Glazer Jan 1999

Thinking Strategically: How Federal Prosecutors Can Reduce Violent Crime, Elizabeth Glazer

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Part I of this Article discusses how, in their traditional role, fed- eral prosecutors have limited their function to case-processing and accordingly reduced their natural ability to fashion effective crime- fighting techniques. Part II explores how certain features of the prosecutor's function make him well-placed to act as the federal agencies' strategic thinker. Finally, the Article suggests how the strategic potential of the prosecutor's role could be realized.

Why Should Prosecutors "Seek Justice"?, Bruce A. Green Jan 1999

Why Should Prosecutors "Seek Justice"?, Bruce A. Green

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article discusses how prosecutors should conduct themselves in light of the principle that has traditionally ben thought to define the prosecutor's professional ethos: "the duty to seek justice." Part I sketches the outlines of this concept, both historically and in its contemporary incarnation. Part II offers two reasons for asking why prosecutors should seek justice. Part III examines alternative justifications for the duty--first, that the duty derives from prosecutors' extraordinary power, and second, that the duty derives from their role on behalf of a sovereign whose own interest is in achieving justice--and explains why the second provides the more …

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In this transcript, Mr. Trevor Potter, former head of the Federal Elections Commission, moderated a five-person panel on the role of contribution limits and public financing in campaign finance reforms. Acknowledging that on the federal level there is both public funding and mostly unlimited private funding, Mr. Potter posed to the panel the question of whether such a system is good for the public. Through an examination of state examples presented by the panelists, the discussion focused on how public funding is actually working. This discussion included whether public financing of communication is sufficient, particularly as compared to self-funded candidates, …

A Vocation For Law? American Jewish Lawyers And Their Antecedents, Marc Galanter Jan 1999

A Vocation For Law? American Jewish Lawyers And Their Antecedents, Marc Galanter

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Louis D. Brandeis is the presiding eminence in the story of the encounter of Jewish with the American legal order. In the centuries since Brandeis started practicing law, Jews have flourished exceedingly in both the legal professional mainstream (practitioners, judiciaries, academics) and the public interest sector. Can this extravagant participation in both hemispheres of the world of American lawyering be explained by something unique to the Jewish tradition or experience? This Essay addresses that question by focusing on Brandeis, who manifests in his person both sides of this extraordinary flourishing. Brandeis seems a felicitous path to understanding, not because he …
