Ecofeminism As Invitational Rhetoric: Envisioning The Shift In Western Consciousness, Julie Ann Schutten Jan 1999

Ecofeminism As Invitational Rhetoric: Envisioning The Shift In Western Consciousness, Julie Ann Schutten

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Ecofeminists believe the Western patriarchal worldview perpetuates a power-over ideology that contributes to the destruction of the environment. Ecofeminists advocate that understanding the web of life is crucial for attaining a paradigm shift to a mindset that respects all entities. This study examines how ecofeminist discourse offers individuals a new paradigm grounded within feminine systems of meaning--no hierarchical ordering. The theory of invitational rhetoric supports feminist systems of thought, maintaining every entity has immanent value. This study reviews themes represented by the re-emergence of the Goddess as a gateway towards ecofeminist thinKing Additionally, two pieces of ecofeminist discourse are critiqued …

Voice And Body Incorporated Into Actor Training, Rochele Ann Tillman Jan 1999

Voice And Body Incorporated Into Actor Training, Rochele Ann Tillman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of both the vocal and physical aspects of training involved in the education of actors; Beginning with a comparison of techniques and principals applied in the styles of vocal specialists: Edith Skinner, Cicely Barry, and Kristin Linklater. I then explore various forms of "body use" technique's used in an acting student's learning process, such as: Alexander Technique, Laban, Neutral Mask work, T'ai Chi, and Modern Dance. Finally, this text unifies the vocal and physical training, incorporating it into a single class. By this, it is hoped to inform the student how he/she may achieve an …

Crack As A Moral Panic: The Racial Implications Inherent To Crack And Powder Cocaine Sentencing, Deena R Trueblood Jan 1999

Crack As A Moral Panic: The Racial Implications Inherent To Crack And Powder Cocaine Sentencing, Deena R Trueblood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the nature and extent of the print media's coverage of crack cocaine to determine whether a moral panic ensued during the late 1980's. A content analysis was conducted on the Los Angeles Times from 1985 to 1990, examining both the nature and extent of the Los Angeles Times' coverage of crack cocaine as well as the relationship between this drug and its association with Blacks. The findings of the content analysis provided support for the hypothesis that a moral panic did in fact take place in the late 1980s with respect to crack cocaine. Further, that this …

Matrilineaology: Mother-Daughter Relationships In Contemporary Fiction, Terra Ann Williams Jan 1999

Matrilineaology: Mother-Daughter Relationships In Contemporary Fiction, Terra Ann Williams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines Dorothy Allison's Bastard out of Carolina, Louise Erdrich's The Beet Queen, Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things, and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club to attempt to answer questions such as, "How do a mother's experiences prior to the birth of her daughter affect the way that she raises that daughter?" and "How does a mother's history affect her attitude(s) toward her daughter?" These questions are important because they lay the groundwork for the ultimate question that this thesis attempts to answer: "Will history repeat itself?" In addition to tracing history, this thesis will identify Nan …

Modeling The Rates Of Lead And Strontium Uptake By Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Patricia Ann Bernot Jan 1999

Modeling The Rates Of Lead And Strontium Uptake By Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Patricia Ann Bernot

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The fate and transport of contaminants released during nuclear testing at the NTS are partly controlled by interactions of their aqueous species with mineral surfaces. It has been shown that retardation of contaminants in the subsurface may be controlled by intraparticle mass transfer rather than equilibrium partitioning. For this reason, the rate of lead (Pb) and Strontium (Sr) uptake by zeolitized tuff from Rainier Mesa, NTS, was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength, and metal concentration; To test the hypothesis that sorption of Pb occurs through surface precipitation and Sr sorbs through diffusion, the data were modeled by …

Rodent Effects On Shrubs In A Mojave Desert Shrub Community, Steven Schuyler Vrooman Jan 1999

Rodent Effects On Shrubs In A Mojave Desert Shrub Community, Steven Schuyler Vrooman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The mounds created by many species of Dipodomys (kangaroo rats) are long-term modifications of the the soil chemical and physical environment which have been shown to increase both the diversity and abundance of annuals in the deserts of the Southwestern United States. I characterized shrub distribution and soil parameters on and off rodent mounds in a Coleogyne ramosissima community in Lucky Strike Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada and performed several experiments to investigate rodent effects on seedlings and seeds of C. ramosissima. Rodent mounds were found to be long-term modifications of the soil physical and chemical environment which support a …

Timing Is Everything Almost: An Analysis Of Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under The Elms" In Terms Of Its Success, Janet Catherine Alicesun Jan 1999

Timing Is Everything Almost: An Analysis Of Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under The Elms" In Terms Of Its Success, Janet Catherine Alicesun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms has proven itself a play worthy of praise. This thesis traces the specific elements which illustrate that this theatrical work, having gone beyond the audience for which it was written in 1924, continues to be rightfully considered a success seventy-five years after its creation. Unlike Robert Brustein in Theatre of Revolt and Eric Bentley in Thinking About The Playwright, who classify and compare all of O'Neill's work in their role as professional critics, this thesis examines and reflects on this one work as an individual entity unto itself; This analysis surveys the prevailing literary, …

Black And Blue: A Metaphoric Criticism, Jacquelyn A Luongo Jan 1999

Black And Blue: A Metaphoric Criticism, Jacquelyn A Luongo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

First, the purpose of this study is to investigate the ways in which blues lyrics apply rhetorical invention, specifically metaphor. Analysis of a sample of songs from the Blues Hall of Fame first explores how classical rhetorical devices are utilized in blues lyrics; Secondly, through metaphoric criticism the unique idiom of the blues reveals a strong trend towards self-abasement. And finally, despite intensified racial awareness of genre of folk (blues) music it is not a closed communicative act, but through the utilization of archetypal metaphor, a universal one.

Amerikan Dreams: Dialogues With White Supremacists, Pete George Simi Jan 1999

Amerikan Dreams: Dialogues With White Supremacists, Pete George Simi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following is an ethnographic study of white supremacy. Using a cultural studies approach, I focus on ideology and how members of the openly white supremacist Army of Israel (AOI) practically accomplish aspects of their ideology on a daily basis. Further, I juxtapose the articulations of white supremacy by members of the "extreme" right with more "mainstream" culture, situating the AOI's virulent form of white supremacy within a pattern of thinking and behavior that exists on a continuum embedded within the larger culture, including our political and economic institutions, everyday practices and unconscious (Ansley 1997; Feagin and Vera 1995; Kovel …

Sorption And Desorption Of Selenium In Cement Formulations, Elizabeth Ann Johnson Jan 1999

Sorption And Desorption Of Selenium In Cement Formulations, Elizabeth Ann Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Twenty-seven cementitious formulations containing three levels of water/solids (45%, 50%, 55%), three weight percentages of silica fume (0%, 10%, 20%), and three weight percentages of clay (0%, 3%, 5%) were evaluated for their ability to effectively sorb selenium at three pH levels (5.9, 8.7, 12.4). A Type V Portland cement was utilized. Distribution coefficients (K{dollar}\sb{\rm d}{dollar} values) determined for each cement formulation ranged from 250-1600 L kg{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}. Findings suggest that increased water/solids ratios tend to maximize selenium sorption while adding silica fume or 5% clay appears to decrease sorption. A sorption/desorption study was conducted on cementitious formulations containing three levels …

Responses Of Python Regius To Animal Chemosensory Stimuli: Implications Of Foraging Ecology, Albert Klein Jan 1999

Responses Of Python Regius To Animal Chemosensory Stimuli: Implications Of Foraging Ecology, Albert Klein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Python regius is considered to be a sit-and-wait forager and has been reported to attempt capture of live and dead homeothermic prey. This preference for homeothermic prey may be innate and is not dependent on thermal cues. Chemosensory stimuli appear to be the only stimuli which may indicate to P. regius the metabolic group that a dead prey item at room temperature item may belong to. Snakes were exposed to novel odors from homeothermic and poikilothermic animals. Prey Searching Behavior (amount of locomotion) and Information Gathering Behavior (tongue flicking) were observed. Habituation to odors resulted in decreased behaviors. Odors of …

A Comparison Of Fast And Slow Contraction Speeds Using Electromyography, Philip James Melhorn Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Fast And Slow Contraction Speeds Using Electromyography, Philip James Melhorn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in EMG activity existed between fast and slow contraction speeds during isolated, one-armed biceps curls to muscle failure. Participants performed one set of biceps curls to muscular failure on two separate occasions at different contraction speeds. Constant load equal to 75% of 1RM was used for each test. The dependent variables were integrated EMG (iEMG), percent change in mean frequency, and time to muscular failure. Integrated EMG measurements revealed significantly greater muscle activity for the slow contractions (t = 4.76, p {dollar}<{dollar}.001). The time to muscular failure also showed significant differences having the fast contraction speed achieve muscle failure faster than the slow contraction speed (t = 5.23, p {dollar}<{dollar}.001). The comparison of frequency data failed to reach significance. A significant correlation (r =.514) was determined for iEMG and time to muscular failure. These results suggest that differences exist in iEMG and time to muscle failure between fast and slow contraction speeds.

A Heuristic Approach For Path Planning For Redundant Robots, George Petrescu Jan 1999

A Heuristic Approach For Path Planning For Redundant Robots, George Petrescu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A new method to solve the trajectory generation for a redundant manipulator is proposed. It avoids traditional computationally intensive methods by relying on the human experience; The proposed method uses a fuzzy logic controller to generate the magnitude of the angles needed to move the end effector to the next target point. The inputs to the controller are the desired displacement of the end effector and the elements of the jacobian matrix that correspond to the considered joint, while the output is the angle magnitude of the joint needed to reach the target point; An algorithm is used to determine …

Summary Fading Knowledge Of Results (Kr): Test For The Dynamic Acquisition Protocols, Changjiang (River) Sun Jan 1999

Summary Fading Knowledge Of Results (Kr): Test For The Dynamic Acquisition Protocols, Changjiang (River) Sun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dynamic acquisition protocols by comparing dynamic and static KR schedules in a single experiment. Five groups of participants (n = 13 per group) completed 90 acquisition trials of a force production task. The analysis of delayed no-KR retention test revealed that the participants in the summary fading KR group performed better than the three static KR groups, indicating that the dynamic acquisition protocols produces more efficient learning than static acquisition protocols. This finding is interpreted as support for Adams' theory (1971) that the most appropriate acquisition protocol would …

The Effect Of Dietary Creatine Supplementation On Compensatory Muscle Hypertrophy And Performance Characteristics Of Specific Fiber Types, Robert Earl Young Jan 1999

The Effect Of Dietary Creatine Supplementation On Compensatory Muscle Hypertrophy And Performance Characteristics Of Specific Fiber Types, Robert Earl Young

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An animal model was used to determine the effect of dietary creatine supplementation on compensatory muscular hypertrophy and electrically stimulated performance of those muscles. Thirty-six rats were divided evenly into six groups. Two groups were surgical controls, two groups had the tibialis anterior ablated, to hypertrophy the extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and two groups the gastrocnemius and the plantaris ablated, to hypertrophy the soleus. One of each of these groups had their diet supplemented with creatine monohydrate. The size of the EDL and soleus were measured following surgical removal of the synergistic muscle and a 5-week supplementation period. Peak force, …

Media Convergence, Obscenity Law And The Internet, Lynette Lim Jan 1999

Media Convergence, Obscenity Law And The Internet, Lynette Lim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Digitization and innovation in technology has resulted in a climate of media convergence. Media convergence occurs when elements of previously distinctly separate media forms co-mingle to create new capabilities. Although there is no such thing as complete convergence as of yet, there is probably the closest thing to a purely converged medium. Any user is able to access a variety of text, hypertext, graphic, audio and video files online. However, it is also because of media convergence that makes the Internet difficult to regulate. Laws that were proposed to provide some form of legal control to the access of online …
