The Relationship Between Culture And Cognitive Style: A Review Of The Evidence And Some Reflections For The Classroom, Joan Thrower Timm

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This column summarizes factors in cultural experience that affect approaches to learning and problem solving. It reviews the evidence over the past thirty years on cognitive style differences in culturally diverse groups in the United States including Asian, African, Latino, and Native Americans and reports recent research findings on the Hmong. Finally, it raises some issues to consider when working with students from different cultural backgrounds.

Civil Society And Multiple Repositories Of Power Symposium On Legal And Constitutional Implications Of The Calls To Revive Civil Society: Ii. The Constitution Of Civil Society, Abner S. Greene Jan 1999

Civil Society And Multiple Repositories Of Power Symposium On Legal And Constitutional Implications Of The Calls To Revive Civil Society: Ii. The Constitution Of Civil Society, Abner S. Greene

Faculty Scholarship

The primary goal of civil society revivalists is not the revival of civil society. It is the empowerment of otherwise alienated citizens. Reviving civil society is seen as the principal means to that end, but it is not the only means. To be sure, the revivalists focus their attention on participation in nongovernmental associations. But the ways of overcoming alienation are plural, and they include participation in government, participation in nongovernmental associations, and assertions of individual rights against various forms of collective will. In this brief essay, I first explain why only a pluralist understanding of human flourishing fits with …

Toward A Geography Of Trade Costs , David Hummels Jan 1999

Toward A Geography Of Trade Costs , David Hummels

GTAP Working Papers Archive

What are the barriers that separate nations? While recent work provides intriguing clues, we have remarkably little concrete evidence as to the nature, size, and shape of barriers. This paper offers direct and indirect evidence on trade barriers, moving us toward a comprehensive geography of trade costs. There are three main contributions.

One, we provide detailed data on freight rates for a number of importers. Rates vary substantially over exporters, and aggregate expenditures on freight are at the low end of the observed range. This suggests import choices are made so as to minimize transportation costs. Two, we estimate the …

Endogenous International Technology Spillovers And Biased Technical Change In The Gtap Model, Hans Van Meijl, Frank Van Tongeren Jan 1999

Endogenous International Technology Spillovers And Biased Technical Change In The Gtap Model, Hans Van Meijl, Frank Van Tongeren

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper discusses the implementation of embodied international technology spillovers in the GTAP model.

We specify a transmission mechanism for technical knowledge that assumes that knowledge is embodied in traded commodities. The usability of knowledge in the receiving country is dependent on the local absorption capacity (e.g., human capital, knowledge infrastructure) and on structural differences (e.g., factor endowments, climate) between countries.

This concept is illustrated first by modeling spillovers embodied in final products and Hicks-neutral technical change.

The bulk of the paper deals with factor-biased technical change in agriculture, and its international transmission through traded intermediate inputs.

We demonstrate how …

The Effect Of Sex On Cardiovascular Dynamics In Normal And Diabetic Rates, Brenda Martinez-Nieves Jan 1999

The Effect Of Sex On Cardiovascular Dynamics In Normal And Diabetic Rates, Brenda Martinez-Nieves

Wayne State University Dissertations

CHAPTER II In this study, we evaluated the effect of L-NAME, a NOS antagonist, on MAP, HR, and selective vascular flows in male and female normal and diabetic rats. Rats were made diabetic using streptozotocin (50 mg/kg, IV) and maintained for 5-6 weeks. Following anesthesia with urethane/α-chloralose, the femoral artery and vein were cannulated for recording and sampling and flow probes were placed on the iliac, renal and superior mesenteric arteries. A bolus infusion of L-NAME resulted in a rapid increase in MAP in normal females and males. However, in diabetic females and males this response was significantly lower and …

Nightly And Seasonal Movements Of Boiga Irregularis On Guam, Mark Tobin, Robert Sugihara, Patricia Pochop, Michael Linnell Jan 1999

Nightly And Seasonal Movements Of Boiga Irregularis On Guam, Mark Tobin, Robert Sugihara, Patricia Pochop, Michael Linnell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis, BTS), inadvertently introduced to the island of Guam shortly after World War II, have had catastrophic effects on the native fauna of this U.S. territory. We used radio-telemetry to monitor daytime refugia and nightly movements of 60 BTS (30 during each of two seasonal periods) to determine the extent of nightly, weekly, and monthly movements. Eighty-three percent of subadult daytime sightings were in trees, compared to only 49% of adult daytime sightings. Most measures of movement did not vary with seasonal period, sex, or age class. BTS moved an average of 64 m …

Gene Flow Among Habitat Patches On A Fragmented Landscape In The Spider Argiope Trifasciata (Araneae: Araneidae), Martina G. Ramirez, Kirsten E. Haakonsen

Biology Faculty Works

The banded garden spider (Argiope trifasciata) is a common orb weaver of old field habitats in the United States. In this study, we determined levels of genetic variability and gene flow among seven populations in central Pennsylvania, based on variation at eight allozyme loci. Mean heterozygosity (observed) per population was 7.5% and mean polymorphism was 39.3%, consistent with levels of variability in other arthropods. Values of GST for the four polymorphic loci (mean GST=0.011) suggest that gene flow prevents the genetic differentiation of these populations. The average number of migrants per generation (Nm) among …

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The phenolic compounds acetosyringone, syringaldehyde and sinapinic acid inhibited the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by A. flavus. Acetosyringone was the most active among the three compounds, inhibiting aflatoxin level by 82% at 2m mol l-1. The synthesis and accumulation of norsolorinic acid, an aflatoxin biosynthetic intermediate, was also inhibited. These results suggest that at least one step early in the AFB1 biosynthetic pathway is inhibited by the phenolics.

Fiber Digestion Dynamics Of Sward Components Within Switchgrass Populations, Daren D. Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, Robert B. Mitchell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Forage quality as it relates to plant maturity is well established; however, strategies for improving fiber digestion in switchgrass populations have not been determined. The objectives of this study were to determine fiber digestion of sward components within switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) populations and which aspects of fiber digestion dynamics caused in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) differences of six switchgrass populations. This study was conducted in 1993 near Ames, IA, and Mead, NE. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement of treatments with four replicates at each location. Whole plots were populations …

The Endangered Species Act: Does "Endangered" Refer To Species, Private Property Rights, The Act Itself, Or All Of The Above?, Diana Kirchheim Jan 1999

The Endangered Species Act: Does "Endangered" Refer To Species, Private Property Rights, The Act Itself, Or All Of The Above?, Diana Kirchheim

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment will focus on the current problems of the ESA and suggest how the ESA can be rewritten to accommodate both environmental and private property interests. Section I will discuss procedure under the ESA. In Section II, the Comment examines the controversial "harm" definition frequently arising in ESA litigation. In Section III, the Comment will dispel the myth that the ESA is currently operating as originally intended and will discuss the reasons why private property owners criticize the current ESA. Section IV will examine a proposal for reauthorizing the ESA written by Senator Dirk Kempthorne (R-Idaho) that Congress failed …

A Casebook For Teaching Teachers: Jesse Dukeminier And James E. Krier, Property, Daniel B. Bogart Jan 1999

A Casebook For Teaching Teachers: Jesse Dukeminier And James E. Krier, Property, Daniel B. Bogart

Seattle University Law Review

This essay will evaluate the Dukeminier and Krier Property casebook from this perspective: just how good a text is it for teaching new law teachers? The answer, it seems to me, is that their book is very well suited to this goal. Given that I have used the Dukeminier and Krier casebook (D&K casebook) for nine years now, my answer should not surprise the reader. Indeed, I think it is this aspect of the book (and perhaps a general inclination of teachers not to fix what ain't broke) that accounts for the extraordinary loyalty that many professors give to this …

No Vehicles In The Park, Pierre Schlag Jan 1999

No Vehicles In The Park, Pierre Schlag

Seattle University Law Review

This Article poses the question: what does the ordinance really mean? Trying to find out what the ordinance really means requires something that I will call "interpretation as retrieval." By this phrase, "interpretation as retrieval," I mean nothing terribly fancy. Interpretation as retrieval is the attempt to retrieve the meaning of an artifact or text-a meaning that is found in the artifact or text and that you, the interpreter, do not already have.

Emergence, Survival, And Fecundity Of Adult Cat Fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) Exposed As Pupae To Juvenile Hormone Mimics, Robert J. Miller, Alberto B. Broce, Michael W. Dryden, James E. Throne Jan 1999

Emergence, Survival, And Fecundity Of Adult Cat Fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) Exposed As Pupae To Juvenile Hormone Mimics, Robert J. Miller, Alberto B. Broce, Michael W. Dryden, James E. Throne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouche), adults exposed to sprays of methoprene, pyriproxyfen, or fenoxycarb as cocooned pupae emerged'1 d earlier than adults from water-treated control pupae. Mortality of adult fleas, after exposure to juvenile hormone mimics as pupae, was increased over that of controls. Females had higher mortality than males within the first 48 h of feeding. Fecundity of females exposed as pupae to juvenile hormone mimics was not different from that of controls. Early emergence of preemerged adults from treated cocoons is discussed along with reasons for higher female susceptibility to juvenile hormone mimics.

Isolation Of Sperm Storage Tubules From The Uterovaginal Junction Mucosa Of The Turkey, L. M. King, J. P. Brillard, M. R. Bakst, A. M. Donoghue Jan 1999

Isolation Of Sperm Storage Tubules From The Uterovaginal Junction Mucosa Of The Turkey, L. M. King, J. P. Brillard, M. R. Bakst, A. M. Donoghue

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study was performed to determine whether intact sperm storage tubules (SST) could be successfully isolated from the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) mucosa of the turkey. Large White BUTA hens were inseminated and euthanatized 24 to 48 h later. Oviducts were excised, UVJ tissue removed, and SST were procured by enzymatic digestion. Recovered SST were intact and contained motile sperm. The sperm were oriented with their acrosomes pointed towards the distal end of the SST, and their long axes in parallel with the long axis of the tubule’s lumen. This method for the isolation of intact SST can be readily applied …

Cytogenetic Assignment Of 53 Microsatellites From The Usda-Marc Porcine Genetic Map, N. L. Lopez-Corrales, C. W. Beattie, G. A. Rohrer Jan 1999

Cytogenetic Assignment Of 53 Microsatellites From The Usda-Marc Porcine Genetic Map, N. L. Lopez-Corrales, C. W. Beattie, G. A. Rohrer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study provides 53 new fluorescent in situ hybridization cytogenetic assignments for microsatellite markers linked to the swine genetic map. Forty microsatellites are physically assigned for the first time. The chromosomal locations of eight markers were either confirmed or refined, while five loci were assigned to locations different from those given in previous reports. Markers were selected to provide physical anchors based on their presumed proximity to centromeres or telomeres and at approximately 30 cM invervals across the genetic map. The number of physical anchors for pig (SSC) chromosomes 8, 15, and 18 linkage groups was significantly improved. Centromeric regions …

Effect Of Airflow On House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Distribution In Poultry Houses, Christopher Geden, Jerome Hogsette, Roger Jacobs Jan 1999

Effect Of Airflow On House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Distribution In Poultry Houses, Christopher Geden, Jerome Hogsette, Roger Jacobs

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Numbers of fecal and vomit spots deposited by house flies, Musca domestica L., on spot cards were about twice as high on cards placed on the downwind sides as on the upwind sides of building support posts in caged-layer poultry houses with tunnel ventilation in Brooksville, FL. This trend was stronger at the ends of the houses where airflow is faster than in the relatively still-air center of the houses. A similar evaluation conducted in a pullet house (Zephyrhills, FL) with an evaporative cooling ventilation system revealed significantly higher fly counts on spot cards and sticky cards in downwind compared …
