Development Of Intervention Strategies To Extend The Shelf- Life Of Fresh Ground Pork, David M. Gaebler, Roger W. Mandigo Jan 1999

Development Of Intervention Strategies To Extend The Shelf- Life Of Fresh Ground Pork, David M. Gaebler, Roger W. Mandigo

Nebraska Swine Reports

The effects of storage time, packaging atmosphere and raw material source on shelf-life of fresh ground pork were studied. Fresh ground pork (18 percent fat) was packaged in an atmosphere of 80:20 percent 02:CO2 or 100 percent CO2 and placed in unlighted refrigerated storage (34°F) for a period of two or eight days to simulate distribution time of the product from manufacturer to retail merchandiser. Products were then placed under lighted storage for eight additional days (100 foot candles, 34°F) to simulate retail display conditions. Ground sirloin had higher percent surface metmyoglobin (darkness and brown color) …

Are The Sows Fed Adequately?, Duane Reese Jan 1999

Are The Sows Fed Adequately?, Duane Reese

Nebraska Swine Reports

Feeding and managing sows so changes in their body weight and condition fall within predetermined targets is critical for successful reproduction. General feeding recommendations are useful in designing a feeding strategy for sows in all pork producing operations. However, nutrient requirements are not the same for all sows and there are differences in how well producers implement feeding protocols. It is important sows be monitored systemically on farms to ensure their nutrient requirements are met. Body condition scoring seems to be the most practical and useful method of monitoring sows compared to backfat probing or weighing. Guidelines on how to …

Forms Of Formalism, Richard H. Pildes Jan 1999

Forms Of Formalism, Richard H. Pildes

Faculty Articles

Does modern American legal formalism exist, and what might that question mean? Three modes of self-styled legal formalism are presented at this Symposium: (1) formalism as anticonsequential morality in law; (2) formalism as apurposive rulefollowing; and (3) formalism as a regulatory tool for producing optimally efficient mixes of law and norms in contract enforcement regimes. Even superficially, the problems these "formalisms" aim to solve and their operational structures share little in common. But beyond their obvious structural differences, these modern "formalisms" diverge even more profoundly in their underlying conceptions of morals, politics, and society. Indeed, the animating conceptions of morality …

Waiting For The Omelet To Set: Match-Specific Assets And Minority Oppression In Close Corporations, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter Jan 1999

Waiting For The Omelet To Set: Match-Specific Assets And Minority Oppression In Close Corporations, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter

Faculty Articles

We argue that the close corporation form is uniquely suited to enterprises with a high density of match specific assets, particularly where the assets are not yet fully developed, as in an omelet factory. The corporate law limitations on exit, combined with the corporate law rules against non pro rata distributions, largely prevent opportunistic behavior by the majority shareholder towards the minority. By locking both into the enterprise, the majority shareholder, in maximizing its own wealth, also maximizes the wealth of the minority. The projects are given the opportunity to develop without concern that parties could threaten to remove their …

Hayekian Socialism, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1999

Hayekian Socialism, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

My motivation is simple. In order to understand the evolution of political theory, it is important to identify the strands of socialist thought in Hayek that with time have become the mainstays of the political left. Hayek's effort to find some common ground with his opponents led him to make unwise concessions to the benevolent use of state power. Of course, Hayek did not conceive of himself as the champion of the expansion of government power; nor has he ever been construed that way by friend or foe. But nonetheless, his substantive positions helped to make respectable the growth of …

A Church Growth Study Of The Chachkapi Church In Bihar State Of India, Manohar Kujur Jan 1999

A Church Growth Study Of The Chachkapi Church In Bihar State Of India, Manohar Kujur

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Chachkapi Church is the only growing church in its pastoral district. However, its growth is very slow. Adventism first came at Chachkapi in 1957 and by 1998 it had grown to 161 members. This shows its potential for growth. The church members are Oraon and the majority of the people who live around the area belong to the same community. Oraons were the first to accept Christianity in Chotanagpur South Bihar. Growth was by a people movement. According to present trends, churches among the Oraons are growing slower in comparison to the other tribals in Chotanagpur.

In an attempt to …

The Development Of A Worship Education Program, Neal Maynard Matson Jan 1999

The Development Of A Worship Education Program, Neal Maynard Matson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has never developed a theology of worship. Therefore, the members are unacquainted with the biblical principles of worship. Too often their patterns of worship renewal are often influenced more by sociological factors and methodology than by theology. There is a definite need of a worship education program for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Method

A syllabus was produced for a seminar presentation on the biblical principles of worship. The seminar was presented over a thirteen-week period. Worship patterns of the College Place Village Church were discussed. A survey employed to discover members’ worship knowledge and preferences …

Collagen Content And Electrophoretic Analysis Of Type I Collagen In Breastskin Of Heterozygous Naked Neck And Normally Feathered Commercialbroilers, Güldehen Bi̇lgen, Gülgün Oktay, Zeynep Tokgöz, Gül Güner, Servet Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to evaluate the breast skin collagen content and electrophoretic analyses of type I collagen in heterozygous naked neck and normally feathered commercial chicks. A total of 72 birds from each genotype were randomly selected at 7 weeks and slaughtered. Breast skin was separated from each carcass and was analysed for collagen content and gel electrophopresis of type I collagen was performed. Males had significantly higher level of skin collagen content than females in both genotypes. In the naked neck chickens ??1 , and ??2 bands were highly intensive than the commercial ones indicating that the collagen …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to determine the effects of some different antibacterial drugs used in the poultry industry for their effects on the immune system of poultry. This experiment was carried on a hundred and fifty Ross PM-3 type, daily broiler chicks. Oxytetracycline and amoxicillin used in treatment of drinking water, and zinc bacitracin and salinomycin capable of being continuously added to feed in anabolic and preservative concentrations were chosen as antibacterial drug samples. In the first 21 days of their lives the broilers were fed with a chick starter feed, that did not contain any antibacterial or anticoccidial agents, …

Effect Of Glazing And Storage Time On Lipid Oxidation Of Frozen Chub Mackerel (Scomberjaponicus), Ayla Soyer, M. Eki̇n Şahi̇n Jan 1999

Effect Of Glazing And Storage Time On Lipid Oxidation Of Frozen Chub Mackerel (Scomberjaponicus), Ayla Soyer, M. Eki̇n Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of glazing with the solutions contained ascorbic acid (AA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), BHT/BHA combination and only water, and storage time on lipid oxidation of chub mackerel were determined during frozen storage at -18°C for 10 months. Glazing with some antioxidants or water of the fish retarded lipid oxidation when compared to control samples during frozen storage. The results of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), peroxide value (PV) and free fatty acids (FFA) as lipid oxidation parameters increased slowly in all the samples glazed with antioxidants as a function of time but they retarded lipid oxidation …
