We have recently demonstrated that three signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) family members are induced during adipocyte differentiation (Stephens et al., J. Biol. Chem. 271 (1996) 10441- 10444). Since STATs 1, 5A, and 5B are induced during adipocyte differentiation, we have examined the ability of these proteins to be regulated by components of the differentiation cocktail. In addition, we have examined the effects of potent effectors of differentiation on STAT protein expression during adipogenesis. A negative effector, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and a positive effector, a thiazolidinedione, were used in these experiments. Our results demonstrate that the expression …

Differences In Bird Communities On The Forest Edge And In The Forest Interior: Are There Forest-Interior Specialists In Japan?, Reiko Kurosawa, Robert A. Askins
Differences In Bird Communities On The Forest Edge And In The Forest Interior: Are There Forest-Interior Specialists In Japan?, Reiko Kurosawa, Robert A. Askins

Most North American bird species that are less successful in small forests than in large forests, are forest-interior specialists that winter in the tropics. These species have declined in small forests because of high rates of nest predation and brood parasitism near the forest edge. To determine whether migratory forest-interior specialists are also important components of bird communities in Japan, we surveyed bird populations on plots at the edge and in the interior of deciduous forests in Hokkaido and Kyoto. Surveys were conducted during the breeding season in forest fragments using the point count method. We calculated edge indices for …

Mental Models For Introductory Csc Concepts, Jennifer J. Wheeler, Erika Rogers
Mental Models For Introductory Csc Concepts, Jennifer J. Wheeler, Erika Rogers
Computer Science and Software Engineering
If is hypothesized that the development of mental models for a concept can lead to improved learning. The purpose of this paper is to identify, quantify, and analyze the mental models of students beginning to program in the UNIX environment. By focusing on 4 basic concept, this study abstracts current mental models from students and hypothesizes ways of improving these models. Ultimately, the results of the study will be incorporated into the design and implementation of a multimedia tutor. This tutor will attempt to teach people how to develop mental models in order to improve their learning.

Qualitative transcriptional regulatory sequences functional in plants, plant tissue and in plant cells for inducible gene expression and quantitative transcriptional regulatory sequences for increasing the transcriptional expression of downstream genetic information in plants, plant tissue and plant cells are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods and recombinant DNA molecules for improving the disease resistance of transgenic plants, especially wherein an inducible promoter controls the expression of a protein capable of evoking the hypersensitive response in a plant.
