The Devastating Effects Of Landmines: The Landmine Problem In The Sudan, Dennis Barlow Feb 1999

The Devastating Effects Of Landmines: The Landmine Problem In The Sudan, Dennis Barlow

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Sudan truly illustrates the broad array of horrors that can be visited on a society as a result of landmine-related problems. While we are often haunted by the image of a small child who has experienced the agony of a landmine injury, the cumulative problems caused by landmines typically do not end with the personal, physical, or even mental trauma of an individual. Invariably the net effect of multiple and frequent accidents is to inflict societal trauma, via infrastructure and economic damage, on the country at large. These burdens, shouldered by a country already struggling for survival, can eventually spell …

Land Development And Biotechnology At The Claremont Colleges, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Founded on the Oxford model of a cluster of institutions, the Claremont Colleges has periodically established a new school. In the Spring of 1997, the Board of Fellows of the Claremont University Center charged with policy-making for the consortium-voted to establish a seventh college; the Keck Graduate Institute of applied life sciences. or bioengineering. Despite other landholdings, including a golf course and a non-operational gravel quarry, the Board of Fellows voted to site the New Venture on a portion-approximately eleven acres--of the Bernard Biological Field Station. (Pitzer's vote was cast against building on the Field Station.)

Young Children's Written Response To Text, Evangeline Newton, Gretchen Stegemeier, Nancy Padak Feb 1999

Young Children's Written Response To Text, Evangeline Newton, Gretchen Stegemeier, Nancy Padak

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Although elementary teachers are encouraged to use reader response strategies in their work with children, many questions remain about the nature of young children's response. This study is part of a year-long naturalistic exploration of second and third grade students' written responses to text. Entries from children's reading logs constituted the primary data source for this study. Analysis focused on two different assignments or writing tasks: "Write what you remember" and 'Write what you think or feel." The children responded to four different types of texts (two per task). Task and text differences were found in children's personal statements, the …

A Report On Priorities For The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, As Identified By Stakeholders At A November 11, 1998, Symposium, Richard K. Perrin

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

During 1998 the NN21 Food Systems in 2020 Action Team at the University of Nebraska sponsored two symposiums to stimulate thinking and discussion about the nature of the food system that will evolve by the year 2020, and the potential role of the University of Nebraska in shaping that system and educating people to participate effectively in it. The first symposium, "The Food System for 2020: Nebraska's Opportunities", was held on January 14, with approximately 185 in attendance. The program (attached as Appendix 1) was intended to bring to bear some of the best thinking in the country about how …

Heat Waves And Floods Across Asia: Was El Niño, Then La Niña The Cause?, R. H. Kripalani, Ashwini Kulkarni

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Unprecedented heat wave conditions occurred during May–June 1998 across Asia. Unusually high temperatures were recorded in western India, Pakistan, eastern China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Even the United States, western Africa, eastern Canada, and western Australia experienced the blistering heat spell.

Some reports blame people for the global warming. The world is warming because of the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, resulting in an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The 1998 heat wave prompted the United Nations Environment Programme to issue an urgent warning and a wakeup call to limit the emission of global warming gases. The …

Access Denied: Incarcerated Juveniles And Their Right Of Access To Courts, Amy E. Webbink Feb 1999

Access Denied: Incarcerated Juveniles And Their Right Of Access To Courts, Amy E. Webbink

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In the current flux of an increasingly punitive juvenile justice system, one of the system's great injustices receives little attention. Unconstitutional conditions of confinement for juveniles do not receive appropriate legal exposure. Challenges to these conditions are more difficult in light of the Supreme Court's recent restriction of a prisoner's right of access to the courts. This Note will analyze why a different standard of "meaningful access" is necessary to protect juveniles.

The Loss Of Privacy Is Just A Heartbeat Away: An Exploration Of Government Heartbeat Detection Technology And Its Impact On Fourth Amendment Protections, George M. Dery Iii

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Department of Energy has developed the "Enclosed Space Detection System" (ESDS), a search tool that enables officials to identify persons hidden inside vehicles at certain sensitive sites, such as nuclear facilities. ESDS operates by measuring the movements in vehicles generated by the beating of an occupant's heart. This Article considers the Fourth Amendment privacy implications caused by the advent of a technology so advanced that it can probe all the way to one's heart. Specifically, this Article critically examines the Supreme Court's Fourth Amendment precedent concerning the definition of a "search" and the application of the "special needs" doctrine …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The C:N ratio is a critical parameter used in both global ocean carbon models and field studies to understand carbon and nutrient cycling as well as to estimate exported carbon from the euphotic zone. The so‐called Redfield ratio (C:N = 6.6 by atoms) [Redfield et al., 1963] is widely used for such calculations. Here we present data from the NE Greenland continental shelf that show that most of the C:N ratios for particulate (autotrophic and heterotrophic) and dissolved pools and rates of transformation among them exceed Redfield proportions from June to August, owing to species composition, size, and …

Ventilation System Design Parameters For Greenhouses For Tobacco Production, R. S. Gates, George A. Duncan Feb 1999

Ventilation System Design Parameters For Greenhouses For Tobacco Production, R. S. Gates, George A. Duncan

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Methods for germination and initial growth of tobacco have changed rapidly in recent years, moving from outside float beds into double-layer plastic greenhouses. Typically, these "tobacco greenhouses" consist of sidewall curtains, which run the entire length of both sides of the house. They may also have modest mechanical ventilation.

Ventilation of greenhouse structures is a mature field, with engineering practices for proper design given by numerous organizations including ASAE. In this article we briefly outline the important features of ventilation of concern to tobacco greenhouse operators.

Long-Term Prairie Falcon Population Changes In Relation To Prey Abundance, Weather, Land Uses, And Habitat Conditions, Karen Steenhof, Michael Kochert, Leslie B. Carpenter, Robert N. Lehman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We studied a nesting population of Prairie Falcons (Falco mexicanus) in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA) from 1974-1997 to identify factors that influence abundance and reproduction. Our sampling period included two major droughts and associated crashes in Townsend's ground squirrel (Spermophilus townsendii) populations. The number of Prairie Falcon pairs found on long-term survey segments declined significantly from 1976-1997. Early declines were most severe at the eastern end of the NCA, where fires and agriculture have changed native shrubsteppe habitat. More recent declines occurred in the portion of canyon near the Orchard …
