The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami Dec 1999

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The focus of this article is the persistent continued strength of wet markets in Hong Kong and the weakness of supermarkets in the fresh food area. This phenomenon is surprising because, based on the experiences in North America and Western Europe and given the well-developed economy of Hong Kong, one would have expected supermarkets to dominate fresh food retailing and wet markets to be in retreat. In this article, the authors explain the reasons for the continued dominance of wet markets. They argue that consumers’shopping and consumption culture, the effectiveness of wet markets in handling consumers’needs, and the appropriateness of …

Students' Mental Models Of Electricity In Simple Dc Circuits, Andrew C. Isola Iii Dec 1999

Students' Mental Models Of Electricity In Simple Dc Circuits, Andrew C. Isola Iii

Dissertations

This study presents the results of research into middle school students' knowledge about the nature and mechanisms of action of electricity in simple DC circuits. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders (n=99) were asked a series of questions about the roles of bulbs, batteries, wires, and electricity in circuits. Almost half the number of students (n=42) were found to have used detailed, well-defined, and logically consistent mental models based on their responses. A total of 15 different detailed mental models were documented in these students that belonged to one of four different general model types: (1) round trip flow using both …

Selection Of Virulent Isolates Of Entomopathogenic Hyphomycetes Against Clavigralla Tomentosicollis Stål. And Evaluation In Cage Experiment Using Three Cowpea Varieties, S. Ekesi Dec 1999

Selection Of Virulent Isolates Of Entomopathogenic Hyphomycetes Against Clavigralla Tomentosicollis Stål. And Evaluation In Cage Experiment Using Three Cowpea Varieties, S. Ekesi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The virulence of 8 isolates of entomopathogenic hyphomycetes against adult and 5th instar nymph of Clavigralla tomentosicollis was evaluated in the laboratory at 4 different concentrations of inoculum. At all concentrations, Beauveria bassiana CPD 9 and Metarhizium anisopliae CPD 5 caused the highest mortality in adult bug ranging from 58 to 97% and 53 to 100%, respectively at 7 days post inoculation. The same isolates had the shortest LT50 (3.5 and 4.1 days, respectively) and the lowest LC50 (1.8 × 105 and 9.8 × 104 conidia ml-1) values in adult insects. In nymphs, M. anisopliae CPD 5 was the most …

Photocatalytic Surfacing Agents With Varying Oxides For Inhibiting Algae Growth. Div.E, Clovis Linkous

UCF Patents

Self cleaning mixtures that use photoactive agents with varying oxides, along with mixing the photoactive agents with carbon, noble metals and cobalt phosphide that inhibit the growth of algae are disclosed. The agents include concentrations of approximately at least 5% to approximately 50% TiO.sub.n1, WO.sub.n2, X--WO.sub.n2, or X--TiO.sub.n1, where 1.8.ltoreq.n1.ltoreq.2, and where 2.2.ltoreq.n2.ltoreq.3, and where X can be one of carbon, a noble metal, and cobalt phosphide. The agents can be combined together, and/or each agent can be combined with various coatings such as but not limited to a cement or a polymer binder. The coatings and agents can be …

New Mammalian Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins Identified With An Algorithm That Searches For Selenocysteine Insertion Sequence Elements, Gregory V. Kryukov, Valentin M. Kryukov, Vadim N. Gladyshev Nov 1999

New Mammalian Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins Identified With An Algorithm That Searches For Selenocysteine Insertion Sequence Elements, Gregory V. Kryukov, Valentin M. Kryukov, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Mammalian selenium-containing proteins identified thus far contain selenium in the form of a selenocysteine residue encoded by UGA. These proteins lack common amino acid sequence motifs, but 3’-untranslated regions of selenoprotein genes contain a common stem-loop structure, selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for decoding UGA as selenocysteine rather than a stop signal. We describe here a computer program, SECISearch, that identifies mammalian selenoprotein genes by recognizing SECIS elements on the basis of their primary and secondary structures and free energy requirements. When SECISearch was applied to search human dbEST, two new mammalian selenoproteins, designated SelT and SelR, …
