Methods For The Diagnosis Of Acute 3-Chloro-P-Toluidine Hydrochloride Poisoning In Birds And The Estimation Of Secondary Hazards To Wildlife, John J. Johnston, Daniel B. Hurlbut, Michael L. Avery, Jack C. Rhyan Mar 1999

Rhyan

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Female boat-tailed grackles poisoned with 3-chloro-p-toluidine hydrochloride (CPTH) were analyzed by necropsy and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The necropsies identified the presence of a white precipitate in the pericardium, which had been previously reported as a characteristic of CPTH-exposed birds. The GC-MS method, which utilized deuterated CPTH as a surrogate, quantified CPTH residues in the breast tissue and gastrointestinal tract of CPTH-exposed birds. Comparison of these techniques indicated that the GC-MS method was more accurate for assessing CPTH poisoning in birds. Regression analyses of consumption versus residue data indicated that the sum of breast and gastrointestinal residues can …

Measurement Of The Cross-Sectional Area Of The Nasal Passages Of Nine Species Of Modern Odontoceti With Implications For Comparative Physiology And The Paleophysiology Of The Dinosauria, Eric Paul Katz Mar 1999

Measurement Of The Cross-Sectional Area Of The Nasal Passages Of Nine Species Of Modern Odontoceti With Implications For Comparative Physiology And The Paleophysiology Of The Dinosauria, Eric Paul Katz

Dissertations and Theses

In search of evidence for or against the endothermic dinosaur hypothesis, a recent study by Ruben et al. (1996) revealed that endotherms tend to have larger nasal cross-sectional areas than ectotherms of the same mass. The reason offered for this observation was that larger nasal passages are needed to house the complex respiratory turbinates possessed by endotherms. Whales were excluded from the study on the grounds that they have no nasal turbinates. In the present study, the cross-sectional area of the nasal passages of nine species of Odontoceti were measured by the use of latex casts. The regression of log …

Variance Caused By Cytoplasmic Line And Sire By Herd Interaction Effects For Milk Yield Considering Estimation Bias, P. R. N. Rorato, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A total of 138,869 lactation milk yields (305 d, milked twice daily, mature equivalent) from the first three parities of 68,063 New York Holstein cows were used to estimate variance components that were due to additive direct genetic effects, cow permanent environmental effects (cow within sire for sire model), sire by herd interaction effects, and cytoplasmic line effects. The original data were assigned to 10 random samples, which were each analyzed using an animal model and a sire model. From each sample of original data, 20 other samples were analyzed with levels assigned randomly to cytoplasmic and interaction effects (data …
