Isolation Of Trypanosoma Brucei From The Monitor Lizard (Varanus Niloticus) In An Endemic Focus Of Rhodesian Sleeping Sickness In Kenya, Zipporah Njagu, Steve Mihok, Elizabeth Kokwaro, Didier Verloo
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Monitor lizards were sampled along the shores of Lake Victoria to detect natural infections of potentially human-infective trypanosomes. In an area with endemic rhodesian sleeping sickness, one of 19 lizards was infected (Busia, Kenya). Six of ten lizards also showed indirect evidence of infection with Trypanosoma brucei (antibody ELISA). In an area with no recent history of human disease (Rusinga Island), no parasites were found and no antibodies to T. brucei were detected. The isolate was identified as T. brucei through xenodiagnosis (completion of the life cycle in the salivary glands of tsetse), and through molecular techniques (positive reactions with …

The team arrived in the area at 10:45. The man supposed to guide them did not arrive, but another person substituted. They drove along an unsurfaced track, then parked and walked on until they could see the remaining minefield marking of a previously cleared area on the other side of the track. They had walked about 15m off the track towards the suspect area before the victim (who was the Team Leader and third in line) stepped on a mine.

When Arsenic Is Safer In Your Cup Of Tea Than In Your Local Water Treatment Plant, Sue E. Umshler
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
The arsenic drinking water standard has been an issue for over fifty years and a hot debate topic since 1977. The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 require the Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate a proposed regulation by January 1, 2000 and a final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation by January 2, 2001. This paper examines the health benefit and cost issues for various Maximum Contaminant Levels of arsenic exposure and examines some of the social and environmental consequences of setting the standard too low. The author proposes three alternatives for the proposed rule and concludes that the present …
