Evolution Of The Dfw International Airport Wildlife Management Program –- Lessons Learned, Curt W. Kuehner, John R. Alexander Apr 1999

Evolution Of The Dfw International Airport Wildlife Management Program –- Lessons Learned, Curt W. Kuehner, John R. Alexander

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

On January 7, 1997, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport experienced its first large bird strike event, involving the collision of over 350 European starlings with an American Airlines MD-80. This prompted a serious assessment of existing wildlife control procedures, and eventually resulted in the formation of the DFW Wildlife Control Program. The number of reported strikes has dropped from 157 in 1996 to 52 in 1998. The success of DFW’s program is the result of long, hard hours and extensive trial and error. However, wildlife management personnel at other airfields do not have to go through all the growing pains and …

Toys As Language Stimuli For Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Cassandra M. Baer Apr 1999

Toys As Language Stimuli For Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Cassandra M. Baer

Masters Theses

The study of the use of toys with institutionalized adults began in the field of gerontological nursing (Bailey, Gilbert, & Herweyer, 1992; Francis & Baly, 1986; Mayers & Griffin, 1990; Milton & MacPhail, 1985). Hopper, Bayles, and Tomoeda (1998) described the comforting qualities of plush animals for people with dementia and began to explore the effects of these toys on the language production of women with Alzheimer's Disease. Women were found to produce more information in fewer words when the toys were present.

This study builds on the work of Hopper et al. (1998), comparing language productions of two men …

Review Of An Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Walter H. Schacht Apr 1999

Review Of An Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Walter H. Schacht

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Sand Hills region, the largest stabilized sand dune formation in the western hemisphere, presents a varied landscape from lush, productive wetlands to wind-swept dune tops with frequent "blowouts." Covering about twelve million acres in central and north central Nebraska, it represents about 25% of the state's surface area. The region's extreme importance to Nebraska-residing in its vast supply of forage for beef cattle production, its critical role in recharging the High Plains Aquifer, and its aesthetic and recreational values-has long made it a major topic of study for students in agricultural and natural resource sciences. Moreover, coursework related to …

History And Nature Representations Of The Great Plains In The Work Of Sharon Butala And Wallace Stegner, Walter Isle Apr 1999

History And Nature Representations Of The Great Plains In The Work Of Sharon Butala And Wallace Stegner, Walter Isle

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When he was five, Wallace Stegner's family moved to a small town and to a homestead on the Great Plains, in the extreme southwestern corner of Saskatchewan just above the Montana border, where they lived for six years before drought and crop failures forced them to move on. Sharon Butala moved to a ranch and farm in the same short-grass prairie country in 1976 when she was thirty-six years old and newly married to Peter Butala, a rancher native to the place. Both Stegner and Butala went on to write about this land, and their representations manifest very different attitudes …
