Jury Trial Techniques In Complex Civil Litigation, Ronald S. Longhofer

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Ronald Longhofer, an experienced litigator, discusses the challenges inherent in trying a complex civil case to a jury. In conclusion, he suggests litigation techniques which have proved successful in overcoming such obstacles and effectively translating complex evidence to jurors.

When Balance And Fairness Collide: An Argument For Execution Impact Evidence In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan Dec 1999

When Balance And Fairness Collide: An Argument For Execution Impact Evidence In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

A central precept of death penalty jurisprudence is that only the "death worthy" should be condemned, based on a "reasoned moral response" by the sentencing authority. Over the past decade, however, the Supreme Court has distanced itself from its painstaking efforts in the 1970s to calibrate death decision making in the name of fairness. Compelling proof of this shift is manifest in the Court's decisions to permit victim impact evidence in capital trials, and to allow jurors to be instructed that sympathy for capital defendants is not to influence capital decisions. This Article examines a novel strategy now being employed …

The Law Of Group Polarization, Cass R. Sunstein Dec 1999

The Law Of Group Polarization, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In a striking empirical regularity, deliberation tends to move groups, and the individuals who compose them, toward a more extreme point in the direction indicated by their own predeliberation judgments. For example, people who are opposed to the minimum wage are likely, after talking to each other, to be still more opposed; people who tend to support gun control are likely, after discussion, to support gun control with considerable enthusiasm; people who believe that global warming is a serious problem are likely, after discussion, to insist on severe measures to prevent global warming. This general phenomenon -- group polarization -- …

Pharmacotherapy In Acute Spinal Cord Injury, Yen-Ho Wang, Tien-Shang Huang Dec 1999

Pharmacotherapy In Acute Spinal Cord Injury, Yen-Ho Wang, Tien-Shang Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), a devastating event, results in huge costs to patients and society. Current management emphasizes general supportive care and stabilization of associated spinal columnar injury to prevent worsening of the cord lesions. Most of the numerous experimental studies to investigate pathophysiological changes following acute SCI suggest a two-step mechanism of damage to the spinal cord in which the primary (direct) or mechanical injury caused by trauma initiates secondary (indirect) or progressive autodestructive injury of the cord. During recent years, free oxygen radical generation and lipid peroxidation have been implicated in the secondary injury.Several pharmacological agents …

The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins Dec 1999

The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins

Masters Theses

This study investigates a complex location-planning problem that is often faced by managers of nature centers: how to select sites on which to position new habitat reserves. Mission statements of these establishments often indicate objectives of habitat preservation and public education. Inherent in land preservation is a limited amount of traffic through the area. In contrast, in order for visitors to fully experience an ecosystem, access to the site is required.

In order to address site selection problems at such institutions, the Educational Nature Reserve Model was developed. This model fits situations in which the conflicting goals of conservation and …

Multimedia Databases, S. R. Subramanya Dec 1999

Multimedia Databases, S. R. Subramanya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The acquisition, generation, storage and processing of multimedia data in computers and transmission over networks have grown tremendously. Databases have been developed to cope with huge amounts of data in different applications. Multimedia databases (MMDB) are essential for efficient management and effective use of this data. They are however still in their infancy. Most current MMDB system prototypes are closely bound to narrow application areas. Experiences gained from developing and using novel multimedia will help advance the multimedia database technology.
