Germplasm Evaluation Program- Progress Report No. 18, Larry V. Cundiff, Keith Gregory, T. L. Wheeler, Steven D. Shackelford, M. Koohmaraie, Harvey C. Freetly, D.D. Lunstra

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for improving efficiency of beef production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and complementarity through crossbreeding and composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. No single breed excels in all traits of importance to beef production. Previous results have shown that Bos indicus X Bos taurus (e.g., Brahman, Sahiwal and Nellore sired F1cows out of Hereford and Angus dams) crosses were exceptionally productive …

Kyburz, Ca 95720, Usa, Martin Hochstrasser

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Lake Tahoe is situated in the California Sierra Nevada on the border of the state of Nevada. One who travels from here over the gently descending Western slope of the mountain range to the California capital Sacramento or further to San Francisco, will choose US highway 50. After a few dozen kilometers drive through mountainous forested areas which have a few small settlements the traveler will come upon a group of buildings which obviously stem from stage coach times.

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts, Dennis Barlow Jun 1999

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts, Dennis Barlow

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In late 1997, I attended a major humanitarian demining conference. A workshop there focused on the requirements of operators. My first question to the working group: "What is a demining operator?" Is he only a mine clearer, or are we indeed concerned with operators involved across the demining activity spectrum, e.g. victim assistance, personnel, mine awareness practitioners, management trainers, etc. My question was quickly dismissed as being trivial. Deminers were clearers.

The Frat Volume 96 Number 03 April, May & June 1999, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

1991-2000

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

In Search Of Common Ground: Developing Partnerships For Wolf Recovery In The Adirondack Park, William B. Morton Jun 1999

In Search Of Common Ground: Developing Partnerships For Wolf Recovery In The Adirondack Park, William B. Morton

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Editors note: What follows is a condensation of a presentation to the Adirondack Conservation Council on December 13, 1998. While focus is on wolf recovery in the Adirondacks, the pros and cons of the issue are germane to other locales in the United States.

It is a rather daunting task to try to build a wolf recovery partnership, given the climate of public opinion among Adirondackers about wolf recovery. But try we must.

Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey Jun 1999

Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

In this paper I will propose six principles governing the proper role of moral and social values in the conduct of scientific uivestigation. I offer them for your consideration, and hope that together we can sharpen their formulatton, explore their implications and test their acceptability. In making my proposals I draw considerably from my recent books, Valores e Atividade Científica (VAC, Lacey 1988) and Is Science Value Free? Values and Scientific Understanding (SVF, Lacey 1999a) The detailed argument, and elaboration of the technical notions that I use are to be found in them (and summarized in Lacey 1999c). The sketch …

Overcoming Response Bias Using Symbolic Representations Of Number By Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Sarah T. Boysen, Kimberly L. Mukobi, Gary G. Berntson Jun 1999

Overcoming Response Bias Using Symbolic Representations Of Number By Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Sarah T. Boysen, Kimberly L. Mukobi, Gary G. Berntson

Sentience Collection

We previously reported that chimpanzees were unable to optimally select the smaller of two candy arrays in order to receive a larger reward. When Arabic numerals were substituted for the candy arrays, animals who had had prior training with numerical symbols showed an immediate and significant improvement in performance and were able to select reliably the smaller numeric representation in order to obtain a larger reward. Poor performance with candy arrays was interpreted as reflecting a response bias toward the intrinsic incentive and/or perceptual features of the larger array. In contrast, the Arabic numerals represent numerosity symbolically and appear to …

Late Effects Of Ionizing Radiation On Normal Microvascular Networks, Vinh Nguyen Jun 1999

Late Effects Of Ionizing Radiation On Normal Microvascular Networks, Vinh Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation result in changes in the structure and function of microvascular networks in normal tissue. Previously, we reported on the early effects of ionizing radiation on microvascular networks at 3, 7, and 30 days post-irradiation [1-3]. Data from the early time points suggested that ionizing radiation significantly alters the structure and function of microvascular networks and interferes with the normal processes of vessel maturation. Here, we
present our findings on the late effects of ionizing radiation on normal tissue microvasculature at 60, 120, and 180 days post-irradiation. The cremaster muscle of Golden Syrian hamster was locally …

Humanitarian Demining And Robotics, Y. Baudoin, M. Acheroy, M. Piette, J.P. Salmon Jun 1999

Humanitarian Demining And Robotics, Y. Baudoin, M. Acheroy, M. Piette, J.P. Salmon

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mines were used for the first time during the American Civil War in the United States (1861-1865). Anti-tank mines were later ameliorated and laid on the battlefields of the First World War. Mine clearing operations did not pose major problems with those visible and easy-to-detect anti-tank mines. The reason why Anti-personnel mines have been conceived and systematically used on the anti-tank minefields during the Second World War was because such mines prevented the enemy from easy demining of the defense system.
