Relative Abundance Of Postlarval And Juvenile Penaeid Shrimps In Submerged Aquatic Vegetation And Emergent Marsh Habitats, Jeffrey C. Howe, Richard K. Wallace Dec 1999

Relative Abundance Of Postlarval And Juvenile Penaeid Shrimps In Submerged Aquatic Vegetation And Emergent Marsh Habitats, Jeffrey C. Howe, Richard K. Wallace

Gulf of Mexico Science

Postlarval and juvenile densities of Farfantepenaeus aztecus, Farfantepenaeus duorarum, and Litopenaeus setiferus were compared among emergent marsh (Spartina alterniflora), submerged aquatic vegetation (Ruppia maritima), and adjacent unvegetated areas at the east end of Fowl River along Mobile Bay, AL. A total of 108 samples were collected between July 1994 and Nov. 1995, of which 76 samples contained at least one of the three penaeid species. Of the 507 penaeid shrimp collected, 303 (60%) were collected in the R. maritima beds, 152 (30%) in the S. alterniflora, and 52 (10%) in the sand/mud habitat. …

Luther And "Social Ethics", Terrance Adamson Dec 1999

Luther And "Social Ethics", Terrance Adamson

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

For Luther, it appears, that there is a distinction between an office of authority and the office holder. The office holder is the same as any other Christian with the same divine command to "love" in and through his call. Instruction and Christian admonition to the individual regarding faith and Christian duty does not, in itself, violate the distinction between Law and Gospel.

Mammal Research In Southern Africa: Present Patterns And Future Priorities, Johan T. Du Toit, L. S. Broomhall

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We conducted a survey to identify present patterns and future priorities for mammal research in southern Africa (countries including and southwards of Angola, Zambia and Tanzania). Two sets of peer-reviewed journals were scanned for papers on southern African mammal research over the period 1988-1998: one set comprised five journals published in South Africa; the other comprised 10 journals published abroad. For the same period we reviewed titles of M.Sc. and Ph.D. dissertations completed in zoology departments of South African universities. A questionaire was administered by e-mail to. 126 researchers active in mammal research in southern Africa, concurrently with a separate …

Toward A Viable Coastal Resource Management Strategy For Liberia : The Formation Of An Autonomous Integrated Coastal Resource Management Commission, Cyrus L. Gray Jr. Dec 1999

Toward A Viable Coastal Resource Management Strategy For Liberia : The Formation Of An Autonomous Integrated Coastal Resource Management Commission, Cyrus L. Gray Jr.

World Maritime University Dissertations

Most of Liberia’s population of three million live in the vicinity of its 350 miles long coast and depend to a large extent on the resources and economy associated with the coastal area. There is also a huge potential for earnings from the exploitation of offshore petroleum, something, which has been discovered in Liberian waters but remains unexploited. The level of development in these areas, environmental considerations, regional cooperation and compliance with internationally agreed standards and conventions leaves much to be desired for Liberia. This dissertation is an appraisal of Liberia’s treatment of these important issues, both in legislation and …

Diet Of A Great Horned Owl (Bubo Virginianus) On A Small Coastal Connecticut Island, Jon A. Moore, Celia Lewis, Michael R. Anderson

Postilla

We assessed the diet of a single great horned owl residing on a small coastal island in Long Island Sound by examining the contents of pellets and other materials found below roosts. This owl fed on an unusually broad array of prey items, especially birds, providing insight into the foraging strategies used.

An Assessment Of Building Energy Efficiency Options At Horn Island Ranger Station, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida Solar Energy Center, Stephen Barkaszi Dec 1999

An Assessment Of Building Energy Efficiency Options At Horn Island Ranger Station, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida Solar Energy Center, Stephen Barkaszi

FSEC Energy Research Center®

As requested by Joe Martin of the National Park Service (NPS), Southeast Support Office, researchers from the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) conducted a building energy efficiency assessment for the ranger station on Horn Island, Mississippi. The assessment included audits and inspections of the energy systems, building thermal performance, appliances, and energy use patterns. FSEC researchers Stephen Barkaszi and John Harrison conducted the audits and on-site inspections June 29 and June 30, 1999. The purpose of the assessment was to evaluate the facility and to present recommendations for improving the energy efficiency of the building. This report summarizes the information …

Structure And Function Analysis Of Lin-14, A Temporal Regulator Of Postembryonic Developmental Events In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yang Hong, Rosalind C. Lee, Victor Ambros Dec 1999

Structure And Function Analysis Of Lin-14, A Temporal Regulator Of Postembryonic Developmental Events In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yang Hong, Rosalind C. Lee, Victor Ambros

Dartmouth Scholarship

During postembryonic development of Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic gene lin-14 controls the timing of developmental events in diverse cell types. Three alternativelin-14 transcripts are predicted to encode isoforms of a novel nuclear protein that differ in their amino-terminal domains. In this paper, we report that the alternative amino-terminal domains of LIN-14 are dispensable and that a carboxy-terminal region within exons 9 to 13 is necessary and sufficient for in vivo LIN-14 function. A transgene capable of expressing only one of the three alternativelin-14 gene products rescues a lin-14 null mutation and is developmentally regulated by lin-4. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Interactive Multimedia And Instructor-Led Demonstration In Teaching Operation Of Networked Computers., David Nathaniel Yearwood

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the efficacy of utilizing a computer interactive multimedia module as a tool for increasing student understanding of network computers at UND-Lake Region. Ninety four incoming freshman students enrolled at UND-Lake Region for the 1998/1999 academic year participated in a study comparing two methods of instruction. The following research questions were designed to analyze students' attitudes and retention of training received: (1) Were there differences between the groups on the achievement factors related to computer usage? (2) Were there differences between the groups on the attitude factors related to computer usage? (3) Were there differences between groups on …

N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz Dec 1999

N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz

Theses and Dissertations

Aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and well done meat require host-mediated metabolic activation before initiating tumors in target organs. The N-acetyltransferase isozymes, NAT1 and NAT2, catalyze the activation (O-acetylation) of aromatic and heterocyclic amines and also the deactivation (N-acetylation) of aromatic amines. Both NAT1 and NAT2 are subject to genetic polymorphisms. Using molecular epidemiological studies, in vitro studies in human mammary tissues, and a genetically defined rapid and slow acetylator congenic hamster model, we tested our hypothesis that rapid NAT1 and/or NAT2 acetylators are at an increased risk of breast cancer, especially those women exposed to …
