Timp-1 Expression Is Increased In X-Linked Progressive Retinal Atrophy Despite Its Exclusion As A Candidate Gene, Caroline Zeiss, Gregory M. Acland, Gustavo D. Aguirre, Kunal Ray

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

X-linked progressive retinal atrophy (XLPRA) is the only known natural animal model for X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP), a blinding disorder in man. The tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase 1 gene (TIMP-1), present in close proximity to one of the two XLRPloci, was tested as a candidate for XLPRA, by first characterizing the cDNA and gene from a normal dog. The cloned canine TIMP-1 cDNA is predicted to encode a protein of 207 amino acids with 66–83% identity in the deduced aa sequence with homologous mammalian genes. No sequence difference in the coding sequence of  …

Drosophila Fascin Mutants Are Rescued By Overexpression Of The Villin-Like Protein, Quail, Kelly Cant, Brenda A. Knowles, Shalina Mahajan-Miklos, Matthew Heintzelman, Lynn Cooley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Actin bundle assembly in specialized structures such as microvilli on intestinal epithelia and Drosophila bristles requires two actin bundling proteins. In these systems, the distinct biochemical properties and temporal localization of actin bundling proteins suggest that these proteins are not redundant. During Drosophila oogenesis, the formation of cytoplasmic actin bundles in nurse cells requires two actin bundling proteins, fascin encoded by the singed gene and a villin-like protein encoded by the quail gene. singed and quail mutations are fully recessive and each mutation disrupts nurse cell cytoplasmic actin bundle formation. We used P-element mediated germline transformation to overexpress quail in …

On the morning of the accident the victim was working as a prodder man on an upward incline of 30o. The detector man got a reading, marked it and called to the victim to investigate. As the victim was excavating he saw a white metal tube about the size of a finger but did not recognise what it was. He continued to prod around it and he initiated the mine with the tip of his prodder

Density Of Zeros On The Lee-Yang Circle Obtained From Magnetization Data Of A Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet, Christian Binek Dec 1998

Density Of Zeros On The Lee-Yang Circle Obtained From Magnetization Data Of A Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

In order to provide experimental access to the statistical theory of Lee and Yang [Phys. Rev. 87, 410 (1952)] the density function g(θ) of zeros on the Lee-Yang circle has been determined for the first time by analyzing isothermal magnetization data m(H) of the Ising ferromagnet FeCl2 in axial magnetic fields H at temperatures 34≤T≤99 K. The validity of our approach is demonstrated by the perfect agreement of magnetic specific heat data as calculated from g(θ) and m(H) via Maxwell's relation. Moreover, the correct in-plane exchange constant of FeCl2 emerges from the …

Basics Of Focusing Schlieren Systems, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

Among flow visualization techniques, the Focusing Schlieren system has been largely ignored by the field. It is, however, a low cost solution to solving visualization of density gradients, a system with good sensitivity to visualize convection patterns in liquids or gases such as warm air rising from a flame or heated object and ultimately it is also a powerful tool for teaching many optics related principles.

An Ab Initio Study Of The Mono- And Difluorides Of Krypton, Gerald J. Hoffman, Laura A. Swafford '97, Robert J. Cave Dec 1998

An Ab Initio Study Of The Mono- And Difluorides Of Krypton, Gerald J. Hoffman, Laura A. Swafford '97, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Results from ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T) level of theory are presented for krypton monofluoride (KrF), krypton monofluoride cation (KrF+), linear, ground-state krypton difluoride (KrF2), the triplet state of krypton difluoride, and the krypton–fluorine van der Waals complex (Kr–F2). These are the first calculations demonstrating that KrF is a bound molecule, in agreement with experimental observation. When corrected for basis-set superposition error, the calculated potential displays quantitative agreement with the attractive wall of the experimentally measured potential curve. Results are also presented for KrF+ and linear KrF2 which yield accurate values for their dissociation energies. The triplet state of …

Survival Strategies For Nonprofit Social Service Organizations, Jennifer Alexander

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This monograph reviews the results of a multi-phase study of nonprofit social service organizations serving children and youth in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of devolution and related efforts to introduce the new public management to the nonprofit sector. The article begins with a discussion of the purpose of the study, followed by a brief elaboration of how devolution is affecting nonprofit organizations. The article then turns to a discussion of the methodology and a profile of organizations that completed the survey instrument. The survey addressed changes in funding sources, demands for …

Parent Influences On Adolescent Peer Orientation And Substance Use: The Interface Of Parenting Practices And Values, Karen Bogenschneider, Ming-Yeh Wu, Marcela Raffaelli, Jenner C. Tsay Dec 1998

Parent Influences On Adolescent Peer Orientation And Substance Use: The Interface Of Parenting Practices And Values, Karen Bogenschneider, Ming-Yeh Wu, Marcela Raffaelli, Jenner C. Tsay

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examines how experiences in the family domain may magnify or mitigate experiences in the peer domain, and how processes in both milieus may influence adolescent substance use. The data derived from 666 European American mother-adolescent dyads and 510 European American father-adolescent dyads. Consistent with individuation-connectedness theory, mothers’ responsiveness lessened their adolescents’ orientation to peers, which, in turn, reduced adolescent substance use. This process was moderated by maternal values regarding adolescent alcohol use; that is, the relation of maternal responsiveness to adolescent substance use depended on the extent of maternal approval or disapproval of adolescent alcohol use. Among fathers, …

One-Instanton Predictions For Non-Hyperelliptic Curves Derived From M-Theory, Isabel P. Ennes, Stephen G. Naculich, Henric Rhedin, Howard J. Schnitzer Dec 1998

One-Instanton Predictions For Non-Hyperelliptic Curves Derived From M-Theory, Isabel P. Ennes, Stephen G. Naculich, Henric Rhedin, Howard J. Schnitzer

Physics Faculty Publications

One-instanton predictions are obtained from certain non-hyperelliptic Seiberg-Witten curves derived from M-theory for N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We consider SU(N1) × SU(N2) gauge theory with a hypermultiplet in the bifundamental representation together with hypermultiplets in the defining representations of SU(N1) and SU(N2). We also consider SU(N) gauge theory with a hypermultiplet in the symmetric or antisymmetric representation, together with hypermultiplets in the defining representation. The systematic perturbation expansion about a hyperelliptic curve together with the judicious use of an involution map for the curve of the product groups provide the principal tools of the calculations. © 1999 Elsevier …

Gravitational Waves From Collapsing Vacuum Domains, Marcelo Gleiser, Ronald Roberts Dec 1998

Gravitational Waves From Collapsing Vacuum Domains, Marcelo Gleiser, Ronald Roberts

Dartmouth Scholarship

The breaking of an approximate discrete symmetry, the final stages of a first order phase transition, or a postinflationary biased probability distribution for scalar fields are possible cosmological scenarios characterized by the presence of unstable domain wall networks. Combining analytical and numerical techniques, we show that the nonspherical collapse of these domains can be a powerful source of gravitational waves. We compute their contribution to the stochastic background of gravitational radiation and explore their observability by present and future gravitational wave detectors.

Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella Dec 1998

Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella

Theses

The current study used questionnaires in order to survey a sample of rural high school students regarding their self-esteem, attitudes toward acculturation, and their sense of ethnic identity. Students' ratings of self-esteem were not related to their sense of ethnic or racial identity nor their generational status, or how far removed they are from their cultural background. However, when acculturation attitudes were examined, the results were somewhat unexpected. The students who endorsed integration, or the idea that immigrants should both maintain their cultural traditions and try to adapt to their new culture, reported higher levels of self-esteem and identified themselves …

In this project we study new nanocrystalline and nanocomposite structures that have high potential for permanent-magnet development. These materials, which can be synthesized to have either very high or intermediate coercivities, have many applications in electric power, transportation, and information-storage industries. There is great interest in further development of understanding and application of these materials. Following are brief discussions of recent research highlights for the present grant.
