Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Eating Behaviors, And Eating Attitudes Among Female Collegiate Swimmers, Melissa Ann Fey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between self-esteem and eating behaviors/attitudes among female collegiate swimmers. Specifically, the relationship between self-esteem as measured by the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) and eating behaviors/attitudes as measured by the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) (Gamer, Olmstead. Bohr. & Garfinkle. 1982) was determined for a purposive sample of female collegiate swimmers at the University of Northern Iowa. A total of 24 subjects completed self-report measures on self-esteem and eating behaviors/attitudes. Subjects' Body Mass Index was also assessed. Pearson product-moment correlation was used to examine the relationship among the scores on the Rosenburg …

President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno Jan 1998

President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study analyzes President's Clinton 1993 and 1997 inaugural addresses, and his use of time as a rhetorical strategy. Influenced by his situational constraints and based on a definition of the situation that emphasizes time as a paramount element, Clinton is able to articulate an inaugural rhetoric that instead of being passive and contemplative calls for action. In so doing, Clinton's inaugurals finds its uniqueness. I contend that Clinton's rhetoric of time gives meaning to the transformations of the post-industrial revolution and also serves as a form of social control.

Towards A Model Penal Code, Second (Federal?): The Challenge Of The Special Part, Gerard E. Lynch Jan 1998

Towards A Model Penal Code, Second (Federal?): The Challenge Of The Special Part, Gerard E. Lynch

Faculty Scholarship

The Model Penal Code is among the most successful academic law reform projects ever attempted. In the first two decades after its completion in 1962, more than two-thirds of the states undertook to enact new codifications of their criminal law, and virtually all of those used the Model Penal Code as a starting point. The Model Penal Code was influential in a variety of different ways. First, the very notion of a systematic codification of criminal law received a dramatic boost from the Model Penal Code. Apart from the degree to which any particular state recodification resembled the Model Penal …

Placental Xenobiotic And Steroid Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Patients., Donna Jean Mcrobie-Belle Jan 1998

Placental Xenobiotic And Steroid Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Patients., Donna Jean Mcrobie-Belle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary function of the human placenta is to ensure an optimal environment for fetal growth and development. Nutrients, endogenous substances and xenobiotics enter the placenta via the maternal circulation. The placenta possesses the ability to metabolize a number of xenobiotics and endogenous compounds by processes (cytochrome P450 enzymes and/or glutathione conjugation pathways) similar to those in the liver. Although the metabolites produced are usually inactive, reactive or toxic metabolites may also be generated. Therefore, changes in placental enzymatic function could alter fetal exposure to these reactive/toxic metabolites. Animal and in vivo human studies suggest diabetes alters the liver's xenobiotic …

The Hemp Controversy: Can Industrial Hemp Save Kentucky?, Susan David Demaine Jan 1998

The Hemp Controversy: Can Industrial Hemp Save Kentucky?, Susan David Demaine

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In the wake of litigation over the responsibility of tobacco companies for harm caused by cigarettes and in the face of increased public hostility toward smoking, Kentucky's tobacco farmers are apprehensive about the future. While not all growers depend entirely on tobacco for their income, the potential shrinking of the tobacco market will have serious ramifications throughout the state. Some farmers are turning to organic vegetable farming, or to com and soybeans as alternative crops, but the potential of industrial hemp as an option remains uncertain. Touted by many as the answer to the tobacco farmer's quandary, industrial hemp remains …

The Delimitation Of Outer Space Revisited The Role Of National Space Laws In The Delimitation Issue, Frans G. Von Der Dunk Jan 1998

The Delimitation Of Outer Space Revisited The Role Of National Space Laws In The Delimitation Issue, Frans G. Von Der Dunk

Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications

Recently, the issue of the delimitation and definition of outer space has been put back on the agenda of the Legal Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS. This issue has of course many complex features. It effectively revisits the fundamental but rather theoretical debate between proponents of 'spatialism' and adherents to 'functionalism' when it comes to defining the essence of international space law. It reflects on a measure of absence of political will to establish any rigid delimitation and definition ahead of technical or other developments which may tend to ignore such legal borderlines. Moreover, even amongst those agreeing on the need to …

Teaching Large Classes: Unpacking The Problem And Responding Creatively, Elisa Carbone, James Greenberg Jan 1998

Teaching Large Classes: Unpacking The Problem And Responding Creatively, Elisa Carbone, James Greenberg

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Teaching large classes well is a continuing challenge for many universities. This article looks at one university's systematic approach to the problem. It describes how faculty and administrators from all over campus were involved in a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process, how the problems were clearly defined and recommendations made, and how the solutions that emerged also involved faculty from across the curriculum.

Statements Of Teaching Philosophy, Gail E. Goodyear, Douglas Allchin

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Well-defined teaching philosophy is essential to creating and maintaining a campus culture supportive of teaching. Presented in this paper are reasons for statements of teaching philosophy as well as descriptions of how the statements are beneficial to students, faculty, and university administrations. Described are ways of creating a statement of teaching philosophy and dimensions that may be included in such statements. This article begins a discussion of roles, composition, and evaluation of statements of teaching philosophy.

Holistic Faculty Development: Supporting Personal, Professional, And Organizational Well-Being, Glenda T. Hubbard, Sally S. Atkins, Kathleen T. Brinko Jan 1998

Holistic Faculty Development: Supporting Personal, Professional, And Organizational Well-Being, Glenda T. Hubbard, Sally S. Atkins, Kathleen T. Brinko

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In recent years, higher education has begun to realize the great influence that faculty quality of life has on student learning and on overall institutional effectiveness. This article examines the interactive effect of personal, professional, and organizational well-being and describes a center that integrates four kinds of services-faculty development, employee assistance, health promotion, and organizational development-that work both separately and collaboratively. The result is a synergistic organization that is able to tackle complex institutional problems that could not be addressed by any one program alone.

Faculty Developers As Change Agents: Transforming Colleges And Universities Into Learning Organizations, Sondra K. Patrick, James J. Fletcher Jan 1998

Faculty Developers As Change Agents: Transforming Colleges And Universities Into Learning Organizations, Sondra K. Patrick, James J. Fletcher

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In the face of demands for institutional restructuring and competition from new internet-based degree programs, the authors argue that campus-based colleges and universities may continue to serve their students well by becoming effective learning organizations. They argue, further, that faculty developers are in the best position to help their institutions become learning organizations. After describing the features of learning organizations as articulated in the work of Peter Senge, the authors reinterpret Senge 's theory to make specific application to academic settings. Concrete suggestions are provided for faculty developers to assist in transforming their institutions.

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay Jan 1998

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, became one of the great representative mythological figures of the American West in his own lifetime and remains so today, well over a hundred years after his death. Some decades ago Joseph G. Rosa wrote the definitive biography of the famous gunfighter and peace officer. His present book, not so much a biography as an examination of the myths that have grown up around the man, compares the different facets of the legendary Hickok with the facts so far as they are known.

Hickok first gained fame for his exploits as a …

Infrared Ellpsometer/ Polarmeter System, Method Of Calibration, And Use Thereof, Daniel W. Thompson, Blaine D. Johs Jan 1998

Infrared Ellpsometer/ Polarmeter System, Method Of Calibration, And Use Thereof, Daniel W. Thompson, Blaine D. Johs

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A sample system investigation system, such as an ellipsometer or polarimeter system, for use in investigating sample systems with electromagnetic wavelengths in the infrared range, and a calibration method for compensating nonidealities in multi-dimensional system rotated and non-rotated component representing matricies, are disclosed. An essentially achromatic compensator of dual-rhomb construction, which introduces a (3*LAMBDA/4) phase shift, but essentially no deviation in the direction of propagation of a polarized beam of electromagnetic wavelengths caused to pass there through, even when said compensator is caused to continuously rotate, is also disclosed.

A New Radiosonde System For Profiling The Lower Troposphere, Brian R Corner, Robert D. Palmer Jan 1998

A New Radiosonde System For Profiling The Lower Troposphere, Brian R Corner, Robert D. Palmer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A new, inexpensive radiosonde transmitter and receiver system has been developed for measuring wind field inhomogeneities in the planetary boundary layer using multiple simultaneously launched balloons. The radio- sondes use a narrowband-frequency-modulated carrier signal to transmit atmospheric pressure and temperature information to a surface receiver. The pressure and temperature data transmitted by the radiosondes allow their height above the surface to be ascertained. In addition, the radiosondes can be tracked with a photographic camera system to provide the azimuth and elevation angles of the radiosondes during their ascent, so that their three-dimensional horizontal position can be determined. By tracking the …

Psychological And Physiological Causes And Consequences Of The Female Athlete Triad In Distance Runners, Patricia Sue Vincent Jan 1998

Psychological And Physiological Causes And Consequences Of The Female Athlete Triad In Distance Runners, Patricia Sue Vincent

Graduate Research Papers

This paper was developed in order to identify psychological and physiological causes and consequences of the female athlete triad in distance runners. The most serious conditions of the female athlete triad are eating disorders, menstrual disorders, and bone disorders. Psychological factors have been implicated as the primary cause of disordered eating among this group of athletes. The disordered eating of a female distance runner can set off a sequence of physical health problems. An energy deficit, typical in endurance runners with eating difficulties, coupled with intense exercise training, may lead to lower reproductive hormones in the blood, amenorrhea, and reduced …
